TV Newsers Who Fawned Over Foley Sex Scandal Ignore Mahoney
Newsbusters ^ | October 14, 2008 | Noel Sheppard

On Monday, NewsBusters wondered how much coverage the sex scandal involving Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fl.) -- the Democrat Congressman who in 2006 won the seat previously held by the disgraced Mark Foley -- would get.

Early indications suggest that as far as the television news outlets are concerned, the answer is "not much."

In fact, though all three broadcast network evening news programs covered the Foley sex scandal when it was first revealed on September 29, 2006, not one of them felt that the man who replaced him admitting to having an affair with a former campaign staffer was at all newsworthy.

"They" being Ted Kennedy, I presume.

In the end it doesn’t appear that Foley broke any laws, I’m not so sure about this guy.

There's an old story about a farmer who visited his neighbor, an eminent jurist. "Judge," he said, "There's been a problem out in the field. Seems that one of your bulls got loose and gored my prize ox. We tried to save it, but it was a bad injury. How do you suggest we resolve this problem amicably?"

"Well," said the judge, "Animals follow their own nature. We may try to fence them in, but if an accident happens, and they do what comes naturally to them, then it is just God's will, and I'm afraid that no one can be held accountable."

"I'm glad to hear you say that" said the farmer. "But I must correct myself, because I fear I told the story backwards. In fact, it was one of my bulls that got loose and, I'm sorry to say, it was your ox which was killed. But, as you say, it's just nature's way."

"Hold on!" cried the judge. "I may have spoken too hastily. Let me research this matter in my law books. There may be nuances to this case that deserve attention before we can rightly decide if money needs to change hands."

Moral: It all depends on whose ox is being gored.

I have purposely been checking DU to see if anything is being said about this scandal.....nothing! Not a word. When the Foley thing broke, that’s all they talked about. What hypocrites!

A sex scandal is only a sex scandal if it involves a Republican.

No you know what they say...

Republicans/Conservatives are the scourge of the earth better to eradicate them all then to deal with their nonsense. We will shut them down politically by using Pravada media tactics, we will shut down their efforts to get their opinions and message out on alternative media sources like talk radio and the internet by employing the use of the Fairness Doctrine. We will accuse them of being racists and employing hate speech by enacting hate crimes legislation so when they challenge Obama or any democrat we will label it hate speech because it is all due to their racist points of view.

No surprise whatever that this is the media reaction. Makes the thought of the 0bama presidency all the more scary when you realize the “news” media will be his propaganda outlet.

This is more serious than what Foley did and sure sounds extraordinarily unethical, if not illegal. Foley sent texts to young guys. If I am not mistaken he never even touched them. Yet the reaction from the Dems and the media was that this was scandalous and that Hastert and the whole GOP leadership were covering up for some kind of monster molester.

Now you have a much sleazier story here, with funds involved, and a cover up from top House Dems but there are no screaming headlines. No surprise though that Mahoney figured he could get away with this. Most Dems do, and he probably will as well. I’ll bet he wins again.

Ultimately, the problem is exactly that and it's across the board whether it's this issue or Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac or Pelosi paying her husband with PAC money. The Republicans puddle the floor and hide under their desks rather than go after the RATS.

The media should provide equal time to Republicans as they are actually campaigning for democrats and their air time should be considered in kind contributions to the Democrat Party.

"Faith and Family -- Where I Stand ..."

That was a much catchier slogan than the more accurate "So I Screw Around on My Wife and Pay Off my Girlfriends to Keep Them Quiet -- I'm A Democrat, What Do You Expect ..."

I believe you. Libs are always right and just. Anyone who does not follow their orders is corrupt or racist or ignorant. And the media fell all over each other to invent ‘Troopergate’!!! And this guy needs to be vindicated.

Every registered conservative voter had better get out to vote on Nov 4th lest you be sent to your respective re-education camp!!!!

Yes, and they were not minors.

Don't forget the Freepers who bought into the whole thing. It seemed to me the majority on this Forum wanted Hastert's head.

So what did we get? A Speaker from the Gay HQ of America. The media's whole intent was to upset the conservative base and it worked. That was the October Surprise for '06.

My district. GOP put in a no-name and lost by only 1000 votes. Hopefully this should help change the Congress again next month.

The media colluded with the DNC on Foleygate. BOTH the media and the DNC had MORE information in their hands and “did nothing” (but sit on it until late in the election cycle) than the GOP did and then used it to spread the lies that Foley had molested a minor and that this coverup went to the top of the GOP.

The issue was not designed to persuade just those in Florida to not back Mark Foley (R), it was to get those in other states to ALSO withhold their support for the GOP (so that the DNC could take Congress).

Nancy Pelosi proclaimed that the Republicans held a culture of corruption (this was “NOT” just sex) and that she would officiate the most ethical congress in history.

So Mark Foley’s replacement (D) has now had some affairs (didn’t this woman learn of ANOTHER woman), he not only paid her hush money but also planned to put her on campaign staff (by proxy) and the DNC KNEW and covered it up so as not to hurt his re-election chances. SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT.

The partisan media needs to be investigated by the FEC and FCC for their slanted campaign coverage (lying by matter of fact and lying by omission).

And Pelosi hasn’t said anything about William Jefferson running for re-election in Louisiana either.

END THE CORRUPT DEMOCRAT ERA!!!

The FCC should be taking the broadcasters to task for reporting “fake but accurate” reports that Foley molested a kid and that Bush was AWOL and “here are the memos to ‘prove’ it!”.

It is an abuse of the public trust to make up news.

If Foley had been a Democrat and come out of the closet, he would still be on the Hill.

Foley is a saint compared to this guy.

I hope Mark is doing OK these days.

Considering the manner in which South Floridians reward impeached Federal judges, Mahoney should be the next US Senator from Florida, maybe even on the 2012 presidential ticket.
