I also felt I had to prove to him that I wasnt a bigot. This is the part that bothers me. Again, what he did was wrong, and probably some kind of crime. But she sounds like she was half-in, half-out. She's obviously a basket case, which is probably why he preyed on her. What does it mean when she says I had to prove to him I wasn't a bigot, so I went and laid down on the black guy's bed?

What does it mean when she says I had to prove to him I wasn't a bigot, so I went and laid down on the black guy's bed? It means that she was a child of the sixties fraught with all of the conflicting messages that she received from her parents, her friends and the culture at large on issues of race and sex. Yeah she was mixed up. But even if she was drunk or on drugs that is no defense (legal or otherwise) for those that raped her or facilitated that rape. Does she bear some responsibility? Of course. Does that exonerate her attackers? Not in a million years.
Just one more reason why Bill Ayers should have spent his life in prison rather than as a 'distinguished' professor who served on boards of directors.

It shows the stupidity and naive weakness of a liberal worldview. It is an attempt at rationalizing a choiceless situation. She wanted out, and percieved a way out.
You don't get to rape someone because they may be a "basket case"

She had to prove to him she wasn’t a bigot so he would let her leave.

What does it mean when she says I had to prove to him I wasn't a bigot, so I went and laid down on the black guy's bed?It happened a lot in the civil rights days with the Freedom Riders, etc. Young black males quickly realized that guilt trips worked on young white females, particularly the Jewish ones. They were easy...

It seems voluntary to me. She was “bored” at the sorority house so went to Ayers’ apartment for some action, which she got.
“Nice” girls don’t go to men’s rooms at night unless they want sex.
