A 22-year-old man has been charged with sexual assaulting a 9-month-old girl who died in Newark Friday after she was taken to a local hospital in cardiac arrest, police said.
Everette Sheppard is the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother and was also charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. He could face more serious charges depending on the results of an autopsy scheduled for today, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The girl, Victoria Madison, went into cardiac arrest at about 1 p.m. at an apartment on Cutler Street, in the Kemsco Village public housing complex, a series of low-slung brick and aluminum-sided apartment buildings near Branch Brook Park, police said. There was a case here over 25 years ago where a creep raped a infant, I think she was like 5 months old. My co-workers and her husband were at the emergency room when they brought her in. She told me that nurses, doctors and police officers were coming out of the room throwing up. I talked to a lady years later that was a social worker, you don’t want to know the damage that was done to that little girl. This is beyond sick, beyond evil.
