(October 29, 1982) 2 Republicans Found Gaining in California

Mervin Field's latest California Poll shows the Democratic candidate for Governor, Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles, leading George Deukmejian, the Republican Attorney General, by only 6 percentage points. The margin was 47 to 41.

Mayor Bradley had been leading by more than 20 points in earlier polls conducted by Mr. Fields's organization. A Field survey on the Senate race showed the Republican, Mayor Pete Wilson of San Diego, leading Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. by 6 points. The spread was the same as in the gubernatorial race, 47 to 41. Three weeks ago, the poll reported Governor Brown leading 43 to 42.

Given the potential sampling error in the polls, neither lead could be considered substantial, but the trend in favor of the Republican candidates was of interest to California political observers.

Pete Wilson! He was a good Senator for us, then went on to become a GREAT governor for us.

California used to be a Republican state up until Pete Wilson was governor.

Wilson was a RINO Senator, and much more of a RINO as gpvernor. Of course compared to Arnold, Wilson was Ronald Reagan

Arnold is also technically a republican, like Wilson.

Dukemejian was the 2nd best governor of California, after Ronaldus Magnus.

Exactly!

Sadly, since then we have lost our way with RINO's Wilson and Ahnold. Hopefully, we'll return to a conservative choice in the future; Tom McClintock comes to mind (especially if he wins 4th Congressional district race in November).

Jerry Brown, our AG, needs to step away from the bong and flush the blotter acid. The man has brain and chromosome damage. I heard him on his weekly KGO spot recently, talking about the mortgage crisis - he was incomprehensible and made no sense at all.

I am ashamed to say that in my teen years I hoped Governor Moonbeam would be President, with Linda Ronstadt as First 'Old Lady.' It's why the thought of young liberal voters scares me so much!

He was a liberal/moderate, but he was oddly pretty strong on illegals.

He used to be my Mayor and his ex-marine Governor self seemed to show up on the defense of that last burst of anti immigration legislation that California passed before we were fully absorbed by the left.

I used to detest the man as weak and liberal, but now I would campaign for him.

Pete Wilson enforced Prop 187, which cut of illeagal immigrnats from all public services. I remember Hispanics would throw fruit at him at public appearances. I thought he did a good job lower crime as well. The only thing I disagreed with him on was his pro abortion (choice) stand.

I liked Deukmejian too. When I was in the 10th grade in 1986, I saw Deukmejian at a campaign appearnce in my hometown (Walnut) during his re-election bid.

Very interesting again. So with about 4 days before the election, Bradley led by 6? I don’t remember the actual outcome but Deukmejian’s margin of victory was rather small. In any case there had to have been a turnaround of 7 or more percentage points in just a few days. That is encouraging news for this year’s election.

If it wasn’t for Ah-nold, Petey would be the worst RINO Governor of California in 50 years.
