Re: Powell's Endorsement
Commentary ^ | 10/19/06 | Abe Greenwald

Posted on 10/19/2008 5:05:10 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

Colin Powell struck a disingenuous note with his concern about the increasing nastiness of the GOP, and its effect on his endorsement. Powell said he has "heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion that Obama's a Muslim and might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America. I feel strongly about this particular point." He also said, "and John McCain is as non-discriminatory as anyone I know. But I'm troubled about the fact that within the party, we have these kinds of expressions." And does Powell really think that the Democrats are less polarizing? I don't know who his anonymous Republican bigshots are, but I certainly can attach names to the divisive smears that have come from senior members of the party Powell will be voting for next month. Nancy Powell has called the president "an incompetent leader" and a "liar." She's called the Republican Party "immoral" and "corrupt," all the while diminishing the accomplishments of U.S. troops, and crediting the success of the surge to "Iranian goodwill." If a Republican of her stature spoke this way, he'd be drummed out of public service. It was Hillary Clinton who was brave enough to say Barack Obama is not a Muslim "as far as I know." And if I start in on the anti-Semitism expressed by Democrats, you'll still be reading this when you should be out voting. Powell is entitled both to his anonymous hate-mongers and his indifference to John McCain's record as a uniter. But if he's simply done with the GOP, he should say so.

Some say Powell has been promised, or is fishing for, a position in an Obama administration. But I venture to say that most FReepers know the main reason for his endorsement. And it's not PC to state it.

Well, since I am not too PC, I'll say it. Colin Powell is a racist! He endorses Obama for one reason and one reason alone, he's black. How else can one reason how this person served in the administration of a 'so-called' compassionate conservative yet endorses a liberal democrat?

I don't know who his anonymous Republican bigshots are...

Which probably means they don't exist. If there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that if a Republican can be tarred, feathered, smeared, and run out of town on a rail, his identity will be revealed.

Colin Powell, thanks for your military service for our country and for protecting our freedom.

We are sorry that you have abandoned democratic principles and moved to favoring socialism and third-world thuggery which is what Obama embodies.

Whatever is the reason for your change of viewpoint, we are now glad that you have become a mere footnote in history and hopefully will not be involved in governing again.

Powell led the charge at the UN for Iraq. Had the goods on WMDs. I believed him. Now Powell supports cut and run ... Leaving the troops he once served, hanging out to dry. And what about their sacrifices, are we just supposed to say just kidding?

Another point, Powell spent his whole life fighting communism, and now he supports the Communist? How does that work. Senility?

It’s not about anything but race.

Powell blew up his character when he sat silent on the Plame deal, all along knowing it was Armitage who spilled the beans.

Colon Powell: The guy who made the 2nd Iraq War necessary by convincing Bush 41 to bug out before the job was done. Now he wants to cement his legacy by ensuring a 3rd Iraq War is necessary by doing an encore of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

As for myself, I prefer a different kind of snatch.

When 87% of blacks vote Obama, no one can say this isn’t about race.

I’ve heard way too many black people say they’re voting for him because he’s the first black man to get this far.

That’s racist!

Democrats have been especially nasty since Bush was elected in 2000. All of a sudden we're supposed to buy this nonsense about Republicans being mean spirited and negative?

Colin Powell, war hero, is a racist plain and simple.

The world's gone mad. There is a dark, nefarious evil about to reshape the nation in its image. Lies about one side in this election are being spread like wildfire while those who question the other candidate are investigated by mafia-like goons.

I have no hope for a return to honesty and integrity in journalism or in politics.

Powell was an Affirmative Action general.
IMHO he didn’t so much spend his career fighting Communism as he did enjoying a cushy career in a number of cushy billets.

Unlike Norman Schwartzkoff, who at the rank of Colonel, reportedly carried several of his wounded troops to safety in Nam; the only time Powell ever heard gunfire was while viewing a Wesley Snipes movie.

Powell is done with the GOP.

On his way out the door, he wanted to make sure he took all the appropriate cheap pot shots at the only political party he's ever been a part of. A party that treated him damn good, even though he wasn't a conservative.

Choosing Obama is no surprise. Powell just wants to be on the right side of history. Powell's decision also gave a chance for personal and political payback. Powell knows many Americans are upset with the way he handled his time as Bush`s SoS. With this decision, Powell gets to distance himself from the Bush administration and repair his own legacy in the process.

No one can doubt Powell’s distinguished military service but I think (and thought at the time) that he made a crucial error in the first Gulf War. It was Gen. “Stormin’ Norman” Schwarzkpoph who wanted to march into Baghdad and srrest Saddam Hussein. That would have eliminated all the subsequent military and political controversy that has followed, including the present Iraq situation. Bush is partly to blame for that bad decision but the point is that it was bad judgment on Powell’s part, who convinced Bush to make peace.

Absolutely. If the term “RINO” wasn’t around before Powell, we’d have had to invent it to describe him. He was never a conservative and supported every liberal plank, including affirmative action - Hey! Speaking of that, maybe it explains his support for Obama!

For Powell, it came down to having a brothuh in the White House, and here’s why— In August, Powell was quoted as saying having an “african-American ascending to the Presidency would be electrifying.” Fast forward to today; he said an Obama presidency would “electrify the world.” Powell claims race had nothing to do with his endorsement. His linked terminology about “electrifying” says something different. Of course it was about race.

I don’t think Powell is disloyal - just playing the old political race card on behalf of Obama. By the way, I’m sick and tired and disgusted with the un-American hyphenated-American, as in African-American. Teddy Roosevelt actually used the very expression “hyphenated American” in condemning it. There may be certain times sociologically when an ethnic designation is appropriate. But NOT in our ordinary political discourse. Why is the term “African-American” an exception to ethnocentric and racial centrism that we rightly deplore? I’d like to hear your thoughts.

I think you guys and I are on the same page. See my post #42. Powell NEVER had the least inclination towards conservatism. But, frankly, I think Bush is pretty weak himself in that area. Powell is also going through the process of trying to blame Bush for his own embarrassing statements on WMD, etc., when he was at State. The fact is he had direct access to to the very same intelligence reports that Bush did and he, too, believed it. OK - BOTH were fooled about WMD because the intelligence was BAD! But don’t try to spin it into something it’s not as an excuse to suppoer Obama.
