Interview with Sarah Palin Immigration, latino vote, Irak, Obama (Univision)
Univision.com ^ | 22 October 08 | Jorge Ramos

Posted on 10/22/2008 6:03:02 PM PDT by TADSLOS

...Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?

I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

And the last question would be about politics. You only have two more weeks left...

Yes

What is your strategy? How are you planning to win the latino vote?

I will tell you, I wish that there were more hours in the day so that we can get out there and to more of the communities with such the strong Latino vote that is out there and really tell them that we desire to work for them. We are asking them to hire us and let us work for them.

Thank you so much. It would be impossible to ask you to say a few words in Spanish, right?

Oh my good-well, I don't want to embarrass myself, but … but gracias and I do thank you so much for this opportunity. I appreciate it.

Thank you, muchas gracias, thank you.

Geez. What is it with otherwise intelligent people. Surely someone should have mentioned to her by now that you get more of what you reward, and granting any kind of amnesty to people who have broken our laws is rewarding them for that behavior — and will result in more of it.

I’ve been waiting for this. If she said anything else, McCain would stroke out. She knows a lot of things. I doubt the problem of immigration is one of them.

What does it all matter anyway. The media picks our candidates, they’ll do her in. At this point it’s all just a sideshow for me.

People relax. You don't fight wars with your Commander during the war. McCain is not a perfect Canadidate. Most probably know that the next 4 years will be a fight with McCain but there is absolutely no reason to blow up at this. Immigration has not played a role in this election so a flip flop will not be an issue. She has to say what she has to say for now just win the election. Are Conservatives so easily divided. If so then McCain is in more trouble than anyone ever thought. Man your ships and fight. The battle with President McCain starts November 5th...Not a moment sooner!!

I am saying don't throw the election because she repeated McCain's position. President McCain can be influenced President Obama cannot be. She is not lying but she is sticking to the McCain platform on this issue. You will not get them to change their minds between now and election day (nor should they). As I said, the battle with President McCain starts November 5th. Not a moment sooner

Too bad she didn't invoke her Palin charm and ask "Are you referring to Latino citizens who were born and raised in the U.S., or immigrants who took the time and effort to establish their citizenship, or are you talking about non-citizens who were registered with ACORN?"

She supports amnesty? Where did you read that? She said, "There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration."

She's not for total amnesty, but seems to have a grasp of the problem and a respect for the law and reality. When asked, "Do you support total amnesty?", she answered:

"No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

This approach, a path to citizenship, could be a very reasonable solution, especially if it is combined with better border enforcement and penalties for employers who hire illegals. Perfect? No, but better than the fauxbama plan.

You get to vote for McCain/Palin or vote in such a way as to elect Barry O. If the fauxbama is the next president, we will have MUCH bigger things to worry about than his agreeing with Pelosi and Reid to give total amnesty and citizenship to anyone and everyone.

I don't need to read it again.

Immigration hardliners consider path to citizenship to be amnesty. Just like they consider touchback to be amnesty. Just like they consider Bush's amnesty to guest worker to be amnesty.

She says not total amnesty. People have to follow the rules (does not define the rules). Those here legally first in line. She does not say that the line of the illegals does not start in Mexico (or where ever the homebase is). Good answer except for the "total" amnesty part which implied that partial amnesty would be in the works. This is certainly no reason to give us The One

As I said, there was absolutely nothing concrete in her answer.

She said she doesn’t support amnesty she said illegals need to follow rules and she never defined the rules. The only reason this is causing concern here is because people are familiar with John McCain’s role last year. I say relax, Sarah has not expressed McCain’s former positions here. She was very careful not to give them anything.

She also said secure the borders first

thank you for being reasonable. Firstly, the election hasn't been about immigration so to decide on it just because sarah didn't say, "Everyone go home" is ridiculous. Her answer didn't define the solution and didn't say she was for amnesty. She said follow the rules, no amnesty, secure the boarders and get in line (didn't say where the line would start). A lot of the responses here are just reactionary because they know what John McCain's previous position was. Enough arguing. Back to Work, go elect Sarah. Pray and Work for it. The battles with President McCain start November 5th. Not a moment sooner

I am an immigration hardliner and I don't agree with #25, but whatever. Supposedly, this election is very close with voter fraud likely in many states. If you vote for anyone other than McCain/Palin, you'll get the fauxbama. If you get the fauxbama, you'll get amnesty that we all will agree is amnesty. Good luck with that.

I don’t see the people who bitch about amnesty starting a thread to bash little Bobby Barr who supports amnesty and
other Third Party WingNuts who support many of the Obama and friends views such as ChuckO Baldwin, anti war and believes 9/11 was an inside job.

Face it many on FR use illegals for an excuse to bash McCain as cover for being anti war and thinking hunkering down in your home will cause the terrorists to think nice thoughts and stop their jihad against Christians and Jews.

If you think 4 years of Marxist Obama will cause some people to turn conservative for the 2012 election, Flash!
there won’t be a next election.
Some still refuse to believe Obama and his Marxist friends
will finish off America as we know it if it isn’t taken out before.

It means she supporters a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. I don’t see what your complaint could possibly be without her actually saying what that path to citizenship would be. I for one would be happy with

Go Back to sender
No charges pressed
You can return to the country once the border has been secured
If you can prove employment for >= 6 months you don’t have to go back to sender for as long as you can prove employment (on a bi weekly basis). Once you can no longer prove employment (with the same employer) Go back to sender

Now I could even be flexible on that but it’s a path to citizenship. What would be the purpose of being more hardline than that (So I might understand). Of course background checks are also apart of this

Additionally, I am one of those who is not impressed with Palin and am critical of her policies with the oil and gas industry.

So, now that it appears that she supports comprehensive immigration reform, I will be less critical of her.

You see things as they are and that's refreshing. This is a must win election for our country and Constitution.

John McCain was not my choice for President in the primary, but he certainly is now. In fact, the more I think about him, his record and his history of taking his own stand, I think he might just be the right man for the times.

It is easy to predict that tensions will be very high regardless of who wins, but McCain, his honor, his lifetime of service and his life experience will be much better for bringing us back together again as a nation than the fauxbama, his radical friends and all of their radical, socialist policies. McCain is not the perfect or ideal candidate, just way better than 0bama/Biden.

Well, well, well. That about tears it, don't it though? Things are starting to add up into a package that is a wee bit less conservative than Fred Thompson, even...

Lemme see, now... Avid Christian that would not stand in the way of gay government employee's significant others being insured...

No-nonsense tax cutter who, wherever she has gone, has left higher taxes in her wake...

Strict "conservative" "libertarian" who stands for taxing oil companies and redistributing their wealth as a payment to every citizen of the state of Alaska.

An expose-the-corruption, stop-the-spending "maverick" who was all for the bailout...

And now, A Gonna-swear-to-protect-the-Constitution Law and order moose-shooter who is singing the praises of amnesty.

I am certain there will be McCainiacs downthread who will be telling us how these are all good things, and that this is what we want to vote for...

*shakes head* How ANYONE can support this crap over Keyes, or even the Libertarians, I will never understand.

EPIC FAIL.

If you think McCain with a Democrat Congress to give him what he wants with amnesty in the first two years in office is going to help anything at all either, even by the 2010 elections, Flash! The 2010 elections won't matter, because the Dems will overrun all the Republican strongholds with newly minted socialist Latinos. By 2012 the Republicans will be ~gone~.
