The issue with Montana if it is close is that it has a large libertarian block of voters which could sway the election. It affected the Senate seat last election and the Republican lost.

Having spent some time in Montana. I know that a majority of it’s residents are definately conservative.

What you hear almost everyday, is their anger at the college towns especially in MSU Billings and University of Montana in Missoula. The students are a large enough block of voters, to tip the political scale of a state with a population of around one million.

The poll:

If this year's presidential election were being held today, for whom do you think you would vote?

Barack Obama 44.4%

John McCain 40.2%

Ron Paul 4.2%

Bob Barr 1%

Ralph Nader .7%

Undecided 9.5%

Margin of Error is 4.81%.

So, that could mean that McCain is actually up by .81%.

NOT!!

I have a friend in Montana, near Billings- who says the state is McCain/Palin country.

Those country boys like their guns and hunting too much to ever vote for Obama.
Stupid students from out of state could be the source of this poll, tho.

It's polls like this that remove all doubt about any accuracy in the polling.

There is no other way to explain it. If they had just had a couple states showing a swing or a couple points up on the National poll I may have believed it. Now I have no doubt that Hussein is in trouble, these polls are used to prop him up. Only the liberal sheep will believe this nonsense.

What kind of place do you think Montana is? 90% cowboys, 9% boot sellers and 1% bankers?

Montana is the home of egregious organizations like the Greater Yellowstone Coalition (goal: returns the planes to their natural state by removing all traces of mankind...) and many, many more.

The urban centers all have 4 year colleges and all (except Butte) are trending liberal....

We have two bad liberal senators Max Bacchus and Testor. Bacchus is up for reelection this year and the republican running against him is 79 years old and a fool!

Max is running lots of ads about his accomplishments and Obama is flooding the media with lies about McCain.

I have yet to hear or see an single McCain ad.

I fully EXPECT Montana to go for Obama (he spent 4th of July in Butte).

The only good sign in this whole mess is in my neighborhood there are only 2 Obama signs and many, many McCain signs - 4 and 8 years ago there were lot's of Democrat signs and very few Bush signs...I have little hope, though...

No chance in Hell. Never gonna happen. Kelleher is 79 years old and a fool, he won the primary from Democrats crossing over to vote him onto the ticket instead one of the good Republicans.

Max is horrible for our state and we just cannot get rid of him.

Even if it is true, it won’t be once the photos of teh 20 year old McCain campaign worker who had a B carved into her face by a Fauxbama supporter get distributed.

Fauxbama just went from a possible close lose, to a massive lose. Those undecideds are going to break so far for McCain after this, it won’t even be funny.

The issue with Montana if it is close is that it has a large libertarian block of voters which could sway the election. ...I could see McCain not being conservative enough for voters in Montana, and losing out because they stay home.

But that doesn't translate into an Obama win in the polls, that's Obama-12%, McCain-8%, and 80% "undecided".

I'll gladly take all comers on Obama to win in Montana. Place your bets.

Not sure. I think it was Conrad Burns that did not win reelection in 2006. It may depend on how well McCain does.

Gutless. And unfortunately, this poll will be reported on breathlessly by the news media as "proof positive" that "McCain is screwed".

Obama is at 44 percent and John McCain is at 40 percent in the Montana State University-Billings poll released Thursday.

Doesn't this add-up to 84%? And this is relevant? 4% different (not counting the margin of error), with 16% undecided?

Montana libertarians also likes the Constitution which Bush has thrashed so to the extent they equate Bush to McCain he could suffer from libertarians, who never vote Democrat but sway between the Republicans and libertarians. In 2006, there were almost 11,000 votes for the libertarian Senate Candidate, and the Republicans and Demo candidates were only separated by 2500 votes, costing Conrad Burns his seat.
