The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported October 23 that Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha is in a statistical dead heat with Republican challenger William Russell, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who decided to run against Murtha after the congressman made disparaging remarks about Marines serving in Iraq.
According to the report, Murtha holds a lead of just over 4 percentage points, which is within the polling margin of error for the poll cited by the Tribune-Review. The poll was taken immediately after Murtha's latest controversial remark about constituents in his district, so the poll may change again after the effect of Murtha's comments wears off a bit.
After referring to some of his constituents as racists, the Tribune-Review says "...Murtha later said many in Western Pennsylvania were ‘rednecks' several years ago." As would be expected, Republican challenger Russell saw an opportunity to gain some ground in the polls. The Tribune-Review says "About 54 percent of voters among those polled say it's time for someone else to represent them in Congress. About 35 percent say Murtha deserves to be re-elected."

Russell has raised more money than Murtha, the Tribune-Review says, but Murtha currently has more cash on hand. Federal election commission reports show Murtha with nearly $600,000 and Russell with just over $300,000.

There are not many Congressmen whose names I recognize, particularly from out of state. But this guy is so horrible that he has registered on my radar.
Good riddance. Please. He’s insulted our servicemen and women, “rednecks,” people with faith, people with guns. Who in the world is still willing to vote for this guy? Can he really get elected on the dead people vote?

I’ve heard some of Col. Russell’s interviews. The Haditha slur means a lot to him but his main points are economic. As he likes to say the districts chief export is it’s adult children. All the taxpayer pork in the world cannot substitute for a viable local economy.
What is interesting is that this 35% who thinks he deserves re-election matches the 35% he gets to Russell’s 48% in another independent poll. Murtha losing would be sweet!
If nothing else good comes out of this election, the defeat of this personification of the old school arrogant fool politician would be some degree of consolation as our nation surrenders its sensibilities. That old jerk should have been kicked to the curb long ago.
Tarred and feathered and run out of Johnstown on a log would be the just end to a truly despicable human being who maintained his seat in congress, as is the case with far too many self-aggrandizing,power-hungry politicians, solely because he delivered pork for the region.
It's about time the people of his district cleaned up their own acts by making amends for their past sins by delivering him a humiliating defeat at the hands of just such an honorable, patriotic American as Murtha has made a habit of insulting and smearing.
... it looks like the original gerrymander! It's hard to see the logic of this division, but who knows. Maybe these small cities do represent urban concentrations with voters who interpret Murtha's comments as referring to other than themselves.
I donated to Russell yesterday and received the nicest non-form-letter email back thanking me. I pray he wins this election, personally, I’m thinking Murtha must have dementia.
