Romney going on TV helping the McCain campaign today. Sorry Romney-haters, there is nothing not to like.

HARRY SMITH: Joining us also from Cleveland, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney who is meeting with John McCain today. Governor, good morning.

MITT ROMNEY: Good morning, Harry.

SMITH: Before we get to talking points, is there a point -- has there been a point in the last couple of weeks where you just said, 'man, do I wish I was on that ticket'?

ROMNEY: All the time. I wanted to be at the top of the ticket, but John McCain, you know, he surprised me and a lot of other people by coming from behind and beating me, beating Rudy Giuliani. You know, he's a guy who knows how to fight all the way to the finish.

SMITH: Yeah. So much time and attention has been spent talking about John McCain's running mate in this -- in this case and, now it's -- they're defending themselves about clothes and all of these other things. One wonders if there's a presidential campaign going on here. Is Sarah Palin, has she turned out to be a drag on this ticket?

ROMNEY: You know, I think for a first-time candidate on the national stage, and I can speak from some experience because I just had that experience, you're subject to the national spotlight. It's more like a national torch, if you will, and she has been able to keep cool under the pressure. I think she, of course, anyone is going to make some mistakes, but net-net she's been a positive addition to the ticket, I think she's fired up the base and is drawing out volunteers.

SMITH: Yeah. Let me ask you this, you're going to meet with John McCain and he's got really eight days to close this deal and literally, certainly, make a case for himself. What is the scenario that has to take place in order for him to overcome what, in some polls, is a double digit lead for Barack Obama?

ROMNEY: Well, some other polls also show it a very, very tight race and that's something that gives us a lot of encouragement. But I think the argument has to be one that connects with the American people, reminding them that in turbulent times, you don't want someone who's just a good charming speaker. You want somebody who has been tested and proven and has the experience to get our economy moving again. And that the course that John McCain sets, low taxes, investment, and energy independence, that's the right course, and Barack Obama's course, which is high taxes on employers and high taxes on corporations, that would prolong a recession and make the future far less bright. So I think that's the closing message.

SMITH: Alright, Governor Mitt Romney, thanks, as always, for your time. Do appreciate it, sir.

ROMNEY: Thanks, Harry.

SMITH: You bet.

BTW Romney is the only one not out campaigning for the ticket... noooooo he is undermining the ticket, this man is no better than Obama in many ways

Romney was campaigning for McCain today, and will be next week as well. So much for your MIA gibe, you'll have to invent a new reason for your pretense for disliking him.

McCain warns of dangers of Dem control

McCain’s speech followed a meeting he held with some members of his economic team, including former New York Rep. Jack Kemp, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman, former Commerce Secretary Bob Mosbacher, and Steele.

A Romney aide said that the former governor speaks with McCain by telephone about once a month, although their staffs communicate daily. Romney, the founder of private equity firm Bain Capital, plans to campaign for McCain in western states over the next week.

Next week!! The election is over next week. Romney was invited to attend the economic forum with McCain today along with a lot of other people.

Talking once a month in this situation is almost a joke.

and... this story is breaking out all over

I don't know if people are just making things up or getting bad information, but it's really not that hard to find the truth.

According to his spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney has done 20 events for the GOP ticket since April — including seven since the GOP convention — and more than double that for other Republican candidates around the country.

The former leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City also has contributed more than $375,000 from his Free and Strong America political action committee to a variety of conservative candidates and causes.

Those causes include California's Proposition 8, which would reverse that state's Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage there earlier this year. Romney donated $10,000 to the National Organization for Marriage, Fehrnstrom said. http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705258483,00.html

Romney wants it in 2012 if McCain loses. Palin is his competition.

Talking once a month in this situation is almost a joke.

It would be, if true. However, as mentioned in many previous posts as well as on other threads on this topic that assumption is false.

In addition to his appearances acrosss the country and his fundraising assistance, Mitt has been on Cavuto, Fox & Friends, Morning Joe and the other network news shows at least once a week in support of the ticket, as has his campaign manager, Kevin Madden.

And there's this:

....Romney appeared in Cleveland with McCain yesterday and will leave Friday on a five-day, multi-state tour to “rally support for John McCain and Sarah Palin around the country,” Fehrnstrom said....

Romney and his wife, Ann, have personally shelled out $70,000 to the McCain-Palin ticket and the Republican National Committee’s Victory Fund....

Romney officials downplayed recent reports of tension between the Romney and McCain camps. Fehrnstrom pointed out that Romney and his vast fund-raising team have raised $20 million for the McCain-Palin ticket.

RNC spokeswoman Blair Latoff said, “Gov. Romney continues to be a tremendous asset to the Republican Party . . . and continues to be one of the most widely respected spokesmen for Sen. McCain and how a McCain-Palin presidency will strengthen and bolster the nation’s economy.”

>>BTW Romney is the only one not out campaigning for the ticket...

Nice try. McCain himself said Romney makes the case for McCain better than even he does. When he dropped out after CPAC he hit the trail and has been going non stop for McCain/Palin and about 30 other close battleground elections McCain and the GOP asked him to help out on. He has kept up the tempo and pace. He has fundraised a ton for McCain/Palin and 30 others through Free and Strong Ameirca PAC. He has also appeared weekly on news shows (ABC,CNN for McCain etc.) Of course the media doesn't let much of those clips out b/c he ends up making them and Obama look like fools and makes McCain look great. My favorite recent clip is on ABC where he reduced Tom Daschle to blithering generalities on Foreign Policy

>>>and he is not out campaigning for McCain in Michigan or Utah..

Uh he was just in Michigan raising money for McCain and campaigning for Wahlberg. Last week he was in Wisconsin as well at a fundraiser in Brett Farves steak house. As for Utah. Uhhh........ He isn't needed there. No one really is. Except to raise money for elsewhere. Utah will go for McCain/Palin in higher rates than even Evangelicals.

If your screen name is geographically correct you also might recognize this guy Romney is stumping for...

You know after thinking about this thread last night, I'm starting to wonder. Are the Romney bashers really that scared that McCain/Palin are going to lose that they are already inventing reasons for the loss before the finish. The anti-Romney posts on this thread sound like the DEM's discussing war, "trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory".

Who is dumb enough to fall for media lies that seek to divide the GOP the last week of the election?

Intersting that the lack of faith of some to win against Obama is getting translated into blaming Romney for their insecurity.

IMO, Obama will lose. He couldn't even get half of his own party's nomination. Plus the Dems screwed up in FLorida and Michigan. Primary voters haven;t forgotten their "disenfranchisement" from the Dems in those battleground states. McCain won Florida as well.

Mitten: Yes it does make sense. I want change in the GOP. An Obama landslide will force the GOP to change.
Me: Change to what?
Mitten: Change from the Religious Right. Those Evangelicals have dragged the country down. They don’t care about the economy. They’re obsessed about abortion and gay marriage. The GOP could nominated Romney who would have made America an economic powerhouse. But no. Their hatred of Mormons blinded them from more important issues. A GOP blood bath in November will discredit the Religious Right and damage the fundraising structure of the GOP. It will allow Romney to step in and build his roadmap for the White House in 2012.

And where were you to set "Mitten" straight on what's what? Polling date, for example, from Gallup in Feb '07 doesn't bear out this Mittenite claim.

Gallup Feb '07 data said that "conservative" voters were 9% more likely to vote for an LDS POTUS candidate than "liberal" voters; and 11% more likely than "moderate" voters.

In addition, only 11% of its expanded polling sample that month said, "No" that they would not vote for an LDS POTUS candidate.
Of them, more than half of them couldn't vote for Romney in the primary (in most states) because they were either Dems, Independents or other third-party.
More than half of the remaining percentage didn't vote at all because more than half of GOP voters stay home in primaries.
So, now that we're down to just a few percentage points (which means we're well beyond the core voters now), the "moderates” were 11% less favorable to an LDS POTUS candidate than "conservatives"--so why do the "conservatives" take all the whack from others?
