Why would someone give a tape to a news agency then tell them not to expose it. If they didn’t want the information to get out shouldn’t they have kept the tape. I don’t understand the reasoning.

What was the plan here...to get the tape, report it early in the year and then claim it is/was “old news”? Why did they even bother to report it, just stick it up Al Gore’s lockbox and pretend it doesn’t exist.
