Gallup: Race Tightens, McCain Behind by 2 Pts

A new Gallup Poll of likely voters puts Republican presidential candidate John McCain within two percentage points of his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, 49 percent to 47 percent, which is well within the poll’s margin of error.

The narrowed gap occurs in Gallup's "traditional" likely voter model. The poll, which Gallup has employed for past elections, factors in prior voting behavior as well as current voting intention. This has generally shown a closer contest, reflecting the fact that Republicans have typically been more likely to vote than Democrats in previous elections.

It also puts McCain closer in the presidential race than other polls, which have Obama with leads of between 4 and 15 percentage points, according to Real Clear Politics.

Rasmussen has it tied. Gallup puts McCain behind by 2 so given the margin of error, McCain is either tied or ahead. They're having fits on DU and in Kossackland. Obama is just slipping as the days dwindle. If he was really ahead, his lead should be widening!

Because today's '99 balloons' thread is far less stimulating?

So he lost a point huh? I haven't seen Obama make any big gains. Harrumph. Ask yourself why the One bought a half hour tonight to make one last sales pitch. If the election is over, then he should shut up. After all, you're going to win, right? So why he is acting like he's behind?

As I recall, Obama generally over-polled in the late primaries while his media minion’s were pestering Hillary to drop out because the race was over. Now, I suspect Obama continues to over-poll and his media minion’s are doing a premature victory lap.

I believe McCain/Palin will win this election just like Hillary won most of late primaries.

I think so too. There's an arrogance to the guy and to his MSM boosterers that just turns people off. Like I said I'm not watching since I already early voted. Obama's last pitch is too little, too late.

As I flip channels and view MSNBC for a minute all they are talking about is how Obama will win in a landslide. If McCain was to pull off a win the MSNBC Obama viewers the nervious breakdown will be worse than 2004. It will be stolen election, it will be racism, all hell will break loose. These people have no idea that anything bad about Obama is catching on.

Yes, I am a a bit concerned that Obama’s televangilst show tonight might give him a bump (which I’m sure he’s counting on). I hope McCain has something up his sleeve.

On the other hand, I do wonder if people are getting sick of Obama in their face 24/7.

  http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows Barack Obama attracting 50% of the vote nationwide while John McCain earns 47%. This is the first time McCain has been within three points of Obama in more than a month and the first time his support has topped 46% since September 24 (see trends/a>). One percent (1%) of voters prefer a third-party option and 2% are undecided.

Tracking Poll results are released every day at 9:30 a.m. Eastern and a FREE daily e-mail update is available.

Among those who “always” vote in general elections, Obama leads by just a single point. Obama does better among more casual voters. However, among those with a high degree of interest in this year’s campaign, Obama leads by four. Among those who say they are following the race closely on a daily basis, Obama leads by five.

Among those who have already voted, it’s Obama 54% McCain 45% with other candidates picking up a single percentage point.

As for those who have not yet voted but are “certain” they will do so, the race is tied at 48%. Two percent (2%) of these “certain” voters plan to vote for a third party option while 2% say they are undecided.

Obama has a five-point advantage among those who plan to vote but say that something might come up. Hispanic voters are more likely than others to say that something might come up to prevent them from voting.

Prior to today’s update, Obama had been ahead by four-to-eight points every single day for 33 straight days. During that 33-day stretch, Obama’s voter support had stayed between 50% and 52% every day while McCain was in the 44% to 46% range. It will take another day or so to determine whether today’s numbers reflect a lasting change or statistical noise. Two of the last three nights of polling show a closer race than was found in the previous month.

I think people are sick of him, his commercials and his spiel. If Obama was as popular as every one believes, he should be headed for the landslide. But he's struggling just to hang on.

-— I came from a family of 7, my parents put 7 babyboomers into this world -— we have always been 4 dems, 3 reps.
This year we are all 7 REPUBLICANS. We are all still very upset with the dem primaries, acorn, michigan, fla, pelosi, reid, and the arrogance of obama and will never support him.
And ironically none of us has been polled.

"Ask yourself why the One bought a half hour tonight to make one last sales pitch. If the election is over, then he should shut up."
Okay, so I asked myself that question and the answer was simple.  It's a paid advertisement not a 30 minute press conference.  He won't be making any mistakes and it can only help him.

"So why he is acting like he's behind?"  I'm sure he doesn't want to simply win this.  He wants to win by three or four touchdowns.

What's interesting is that he's not 20 points ahead after 150 million dollars of carpet bombing advertising, a GOP brand in the tank, sitting President in the tank, economy in the tank and a lifetime of campaign mistakes by McCain in a mere six week period.

Still, he's solidly in place in all the states Kerry won in 2004 and is currently ahead in 6 of the states that President Bush won.  He could win this by a very slim margin of popular voting, but from an electoral standpoint it could look like a landslide giving him a mandate and a House & Senate headed by loons armed with dirty bombs.

This is getting scary so I'm going to shut up.

Obama will gain some, though, after his speech tonight. Hopefully, there is enough time left to debunk it so that people get it. Yes, I know that the speech is over the top, but I’m the McCain choir. Obama-leaning people need to see that too and I don’t have any faith in their perceptive abilities.
