I think the sad story of Kmiec’s defection has nothing to do with “becoming a full-fledged liberal” and everything to do with vanity and the seduction of evil. Kmiec was a Romney supporter and stood a good chance of being made a judge if Romney won. Once McCain got the nomination, Kmiec had to accept that the chances of his ever becoming a judge are very slim...unless he sucked up to the other side. Kmiec’s irrational support for Obama brings to mind the Bible story of the Devil spreading all the riches of the world at Jesus’ feet. Jesus, of course, resisted temptation; Kmiec has not. Obama’s campaign has made good use of quislings like Kmiec, and Kmiec is obviously enjoying the attention. He should enjoy it while it lasts, because either McCain will win or Obama will win and forget about Kmiec. If Obama wins, dumps Kmiec, and signs the “Freedom of Choice Act”, Kmiec will write a column about how he was fooled by Obama. No, Mr. Kmiec, you weren’t fooled by Obama; you were used by Obama, and your contrition is disingenuous and far too late.

Romney operatives have been really busy the past few weeks, trying to sabotage McCain.

I remember in the GWB administration Kmiec once wrote a piece about how he was being considered for a judicial position and how he felt unfairly targeted for his then conservative judical philosophy.

I asked a friend involved in judicial nominations if it was true that Kmiec was under consideration, and the response was only “well, that is what he said in the newspaper, isn’t it?”. In other words, if Kmiec had ever been up for consideration, he was no longer.

It’s a bizarre strategy that he chose. There is no reason why he could not have jumped on board to help McCain, just like Romney did. He could have been a team player. But he thinks he can get Obama to give him a judicial post, with all the conservative stuff he has said and written? Just b/c he endorsed a liberal in the general election? Good luck with that strategy, Kmiec.

If Kmiec had just said, “I’m voting because of the Iraq war,” and left abortion out of it, he might have had an argument. But he is now as twisted as a pretzel trying to insist that his vote for Obama is prolife.
