Oprah Almost Has Heart Attack When Machine Doesn't Count Her Vote

Oprah Almost Has Heart Attack When Machine Doesn't Count Her Vote By Noel Sheppard Created 2008-11-01 10:45

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey early-voted on Thursday, but apparently had problems getting the machine to accept her choice for president:

When I voted yesterday electronically, the first vote that you vote for on the ballot is the presidential candidate. It was my first time doing electronic, so I didn't mark the X strong enough, or I held down too long. Because then when I went back to check it, it had not recorded my presidential vote

When she noticed this had occurred, she almost had a heart attack (video embedded below the fold, h/t NBer Mazzi):

Too bad she noticed, huh?

Of course, if she hadn't, she probably would have blamed her voting difficulties on President Bush, Diebold, and those awful Republicans that are always trying to disenfranchise people.

That’s why we get to review our vote BEFORE we cast our ballot. That’s not a flaw, that’s a safety net. She just wanted a couple more minutes of fame so that she could knock the voting machines, in case McCain wins.

I noticed it happen on the machines here in TX.

If you don’t press hard enough on the final “enter”, it won’t be recorded.

Most of the people it happens to are elderly, but the poll watchers here always look at the screen and make sure that it’s clear for the next voter.

I have seen poll watchers chase down voters and tell them their vote wasn’t recorded.

What is the chance that this story by Oprah is actually true?

This sounds like one of those, “It happened to a sister of a friend of mine’s cousin” kind of deals, and Oprah is lying in order to make the story more immediate for her audience.

I HATE this election.

Well, we should probably send an ACORN volunteer into each voting booth, just to make sure the machines work right for each and every voter.

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Sounds to me like she is setting up for the “Republicans are trying to steal our votes with electronic voting machines that refuse to take a Dem Vote” line. This is nothing more than a repeat of the little old ladies from Palm Beach who claimed to have been cheated out of their rightful vote.

I voted yesterday and found the machine to be super-easy to use, with no real chance of voting for the wrong candidate unless you are touching the screen while blindfolded.

So either she’s posturing or she’s just stupid. Well, both.

yes, this “voting machines don’t work” crap has started already, even before Oprah. I hope they’re not planning on another recount scenario and we won’t have to listen to at least 4 years of “McCain’s not our President”, “McCain stole this election”, and all the BS we had to go thru after Gore lost.

I seemed to remember Oprah making a big deal out of voting in Chicago in 2004, so I wanted to see if this story was true.

I’ve been Googling all morning without a problem, but when I entered in a search term looking for a story on Oprah and voting November 2004, I got this message:

Big lady is trying a stunt.

I have heard this very story several times on the local TV news in the past four days about how the vote "changed right in front of my eyes" and now even fried Okra is getting in on it.

The ones I saw here were all "Obama to McCain" switch stories.

Imagine that.

There were some McCain to Obama ones - I read that this happens if you don’t touch the screen within the lines for the box you want to select. We don’t use that particular system here, so I don’t know, personally.

We use a manually marked ballot with an electronic scanning system. It bounces back double votes (2 votes for the same office) and the voter has to vote again. We have a large number of presidential candidates (small parties on the ballot), and a few days ago, a lady voted for ALL of them! Needless to say, the machine rejected her ballot and it was cancelled and she was instructed to vote for only ONE candidate. Human stupidity knows no bounds.

we should consider doing away with the idea of one’s vote being ‘private’ if we eliminated the secret ballot it would help eliminate this argument and keep ineligible voters from voting. One last comment I don’t care which side of the aisle you are on there should be a paper trail anyone who relies solely on an electronic device is a fool that is why we back up computers and why I keep a paper record of my finances.

We had electronic voting machines for the first time during the primaries. When I voted, somehow the X appeared by Ron Paul’s name. I wasn’t happy with that, but it wasn’t a big deal. I simply needed to uncheck it, and vote for my choice. It’s pretty easy to tell if a mistake has been made and to fix it. Funny thing is, the elderly people in line in front of me seemed to have no trouble with it, lol.

1. I have a hard time believing Oprah stood in line to vote.

2. If she did, she is going by the Democratic memo to report to the media any problems you have voting

3. If you don't have a problem, make it up--and report to the media

4. Oprah will do anything to help Obama win

Oprah being a idiot? True.

Remember it was her bright idea to give cars to every member of her audience.

Problem? Most had to sell the car to pay the taxes on the free gift.

It's also likely it's her first experience in a voting booth too.
