Zeituni Onyango, 56, the half-sister of Mr Obama's Kenyan father, gave a total of $260 to the Obama campaign during the third quarter of this year, records show.
US election rules require that individuals making presidential campaign contributions be US citizens, and political campaigns are required to make "best efforts" to verify that, a FEC spokesman said.
The AP reports that Ms Onyango is living in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago.
Ms Onyango was the first Kenyan relative to welcome Mr Obama on his first visit to his father's homeland in 1988, and she is a large character in his best-selling memoir Dreams From My Father.
Asked by The Times how long she had been living in America, she said: "I have been coming to America ever since 1975. I always come and go."
Ms Onyango was instructed to leave the United States by a US immgration judge who denied her asylum request.
Ms Onyango contributed $260 to her nephew's campaign, apparently in numerous small amounts. The Boston Globe reported that she made 3 donations of just $5 and two more of $25.
Interviewed outside her council flat on Tuesday, she seemed surprised to learn that campaign contributions in the United States were public record. Asked about the contribution, she asked: "How do you know that?".
Bob Biersack, a spokesman for the FEC, said individual campaign donors had to be US citizens.
"The responsibility is the campaign's to ensure the funds they receive are from permissable sources in appropriate amounts," he said.
She attended Obama's swearing-in to the US Senate in 2004.

I guess protecting and enforcing the Constitution is above his pay grade, as well.
Take this w/ a grain of salt because it's basically hearsay, but I wouldn't be surprised that the Obama camp is taking anything from anybody.
Those donation figures don’t add up. 2 $15 donations and 2 $25 donations. That’s not $260.
I wonder how she got into the Capitol Bld for his swearing in. Another hm..
But..but...but He has said his campaign checkss the validity of EVERY contribution. I guess there are hundreds of Legal citizens with the name Zeituni Onyango! Hell, I know 6 or 7 myself!
“Barack Obama’s ‘Auntie Zeituni’..”
Another indication that Obama is a downright Muslim or has Muslim connections. Zeitun means olive in Arabic.
WREC 600 AM Memphis, TN radio host in the morning, Ben Fergerson made one of those donations...in GW Bush’s name to each campaign last week with his credit card, bho accepted his donation, McCain’s rejected it. He did this live on air.
So, I see. Obama is referring to HIMSELF when he says to be “our brother’s keeper”. HE’s the “brother” and poor, old Auntie Z. is the keeper.
Why would Zeituni want to come to such a Racist country as America??? Didn’t Obama tell her “God Damn America” ???
Amazing how this people arrive here and start living off the dole. They know more about scamming the welfare system than the native born layabouts do.
Many have asked how she got subsidized housing. Boston Herald just now:
Boston Housing Authority: Deportation notice for Barack Obamas aunt not relevant
A Boston Housing Authority official said yesterday the agency was never notified of a deportation order issued for Barack Obamas aunt, who has been living in federal- and state-funded public housing since 2003. (FIVE YEARS~!!!)
BHA Deputy Director William McGonagle said Zeituni Onyango, 56, a native of Kenya, met the criteria to live in federally funded housing when she applied in 2003. The Associated Press reported yesterday that an immigration judge instructed Onyango to leave the country in 2004 after her asylum request was denied.[snip]
“tenants moving into state-funded housing in Massachusetts do not have to prove their citizenship or immigration status.......A one-person household must earn less than $43,600 annually to qualify for a state or federal public housing unit managed by the BHA. Rents at Onyangos West Broadway residence are calculated at 32 percent of a residents income.
Since 2006, state Sen. Robert L. Hedlund Jr. (R-Weymouth) has tried three times to close the loophole that makes state-funded public housing available to illegal immigrants.
It is a massive, absurd loophole that we can fix very easily, Hedlund said.”
Romney’s sanctuary state.
CBS has picked up the story.
