If you know the answer to this question, you know who our next President will be. While it is possible for McCain to win even if this factor is negligible, he would need to get virtually all of the undecideds to break his way. That is theoretically possible but it is mostly wishful thinking on the part of McCain-Palin supporters. For every undecided voter either candidate picks up, it takes a vote out of the undecided column and adds one to that candidate's total. However, the spread between the two candidates only goes up by one vote. That is not the case with a P.U.M.A. voter, which is by definition, a registered Democrat voting for McCain-Palin. This takes a vote away from Obama-Biden and adds one to McCain-Palin, increasing the spread by two votes.
There is always a certain amount of voters who do not vote for their own party's candidate in any election. This desertion rate is pretty well known and is factored into the weighting algorithms used by pollsters. What is unusual about this election is that the way Hillary was treated by the Democratic National Committee and by the Obama campaign thoroughly annoyed a lot of Democrats. Add in the fact that Obama's positions make social conservative Democrats very nervous. Then there is the hypothetical Bradley Effect due to the presence of a black candidate. All these factors make up the P.U.M.A. coalition which is very hard to numerically pin down. That makes it difficult for the pollsters to properly allow for this factor. Given the spread between the various polls, it is obvious that some of the polls are making no allowance for the P.U.M.A. Factor at all.
As we have all learned by now, it does not matter what happens in the popular vote because only the electoral votes count. So it all comes down to the effect that the PUMA Factor will have in the battleground states. By knowing the size of the PUMA Factor in those eleven states, we can determine who will win and by how many electoral votes. By looking at the No Toss Up States electoral map on www.realclearpolitics.com, we see that at the moment, Obama-Biden has 353 electoral votes and McCain-Palin has 185 votes. Now look at the RCP average for the battleground states further down that page. Let's arbitrarily decide that there is no way the PUMA Factor can make up a deficit of 13 or more points in the RCP average for a state.
Now let's build a table of the eleven remaining states in ascending order of the amount that McCain-Palin is behind in the RCP average for each state. To this we add columns to show what happens as the PUMA Factor allows McCain-Palin to overcome the deficit in each state. As you can see, if the PUMA Factor is large enough to overcome a deficit of 6.2 points, we have a tie vote. Overcoming a 6.5 point deficit gives McCain a victory by 10 electoral votes. Anything higher is pure gravy. Using the latest state population estimates from the Census Bureau, we can apportion the estimated turnout of 130,000,000 voters nationwide into these eleven states to get an estimated turnout. The big question is how many PUMA voters would it take to give McCain-Palin the election? Since each PUMA voter has twice the effect, it takes only half of the RCP average of PUMA voters to swing the state into the McCain column. This allows us to calculate the number of PUMA's needed in a state.
(Table at link)
Now you can see why the McCain-Palin campaign says that this election is not over. There is nothing like a numerical analysis to allow you to see what it would take to turn this election around. Now before you McCain-Palin supporters think this is a piece of cake, let's have a reality check. You cannot count a voter as a PUMA unless the Democrat voted for both Gore and Kerry. Democrats who did not do that are already accounted for in the polling models. This analysis assumes a uniform turnout across the country which is not going to happen. That means that it could take more PUMA voters if the turnout is higher than the average in any of these states. Likewise, if the polls have underestimated the Democratic turnout, then more PUMA voters will be required to offset that. Another assumption is that the number of Republicans voting for Obama-Biden does not exceed the usual percentage of Republicans doing that.
Will there be enough PUMA voters in the top six states in the table to give McCain-Palin the election? I do not know and neither does anyone else. I will say that if McCain-Palin only carries the top five states, we are going to have a complete mess on our hands because a tie throws the election into Congress to vote on a state by state basis. There is one possibility that the table does not cover and that is Congressional District 2 in Maine. If McCain-Palin could pick that one vote up, they can win without Nevada. Of course, that would take sending Sarah Palin to Bangor, Maine as I have repeatedly suggested. Instead, the McCain campaign is pinning its hopes on Pennsylvania. The problem is that the PUMA voters are not evenly distributed by state. There would seem to be a much smaller percentage of disgruntled Hillary supporters in the western states. That is why the McCain folks have leapfrogged over the three western states in favor of Pennsylvania.
UPDATE: Since this article was posted, I have already had to change Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire to reflect a lower deficit in the RCP average. In the case of Pennsylvania, it now requires 26,793 fewer PUMA voters for McCain-Palin to carry the state.
Do you really think that PUMA’s actually exist to such an extent? It just doesn’t make sense for a fan of Hillary to vote from McCain. I hope you’re right.
I only know that the PUMA's have worked their butts off for McCain/Palin, not sure of their numbers, but was looking tonite & each one of their blogs has links to many, many more blogs, so it looks like a large number to me!

this is a VERY SHORT, PARTIAL LIST!!!!
I was a bit skeptical, but evidently there was a lot of animosity, and for good reason.
Obama stole the election from Hillary in the rigged caucus system. They do not want the Dem party taken over by Obama and his people — they detest him with everything they have.
I can’t say about Hillary fans. But there are a LOT of rural democrats that work their butts off, take care of their families, go to church, drive their trucks with the gun racks and think America is the best da*& country in the world.
Those folks will more likely pull the lever for an American-loving hero with severe liberal tendencies than for a lying, American hating, Communist thug.
A lot of staunch conservatives like myself will also vote for the liberal (small L) rather than the Communist.
Yeah to use fraud on your own party is really nasty.
But the most important factor is they openly talk about how they are intentionally fooling the pollsters and telling them they enthusiastically support Obama and will vote for him when they plan on voting McCain.
I bet there is real fear. Your going to say Obama when that phone call comes. The internet and the voting booth are the only safe places for anonymity.
A screwdriver and a dream could change the election. And kill ACORN

put this before the American voter before its too late:
Barack Obama went to Kenya on a Fact Finding Mission and campaigned for Ralia Odinga.
Odinga had a pact with the hard-line Muslims to bring the country under Sharia Law if he won the election. When he lost, he instigated riots that caused the deaths of over 1200 people- including 50 who were burned to death when the Christian church they sought refuge in was burned to the ground! No Mosque was touched!

Obama went overseas to promise the people of the world that he would end the divide between rich and poor nations, and said, people of the world, this is our moment, this is our time.
Obama is running for a hostile takeover of the US on behalf of the anti-American international community. His plan is quite plainly to rape and pillage Americas wealth, and redistribute it to the rest of the world. His speech was brazenly candid about this.
He has already put forth this very plan in the S.2433 Global Poverty Act of 2007, which he authored in the Senate.
This bill, in fact will stick the U.S for 845 BILLION dollars.
Thats $2500 dollars for every man, woman and child in America.
Thats in addition to the BILLIONS we already funnel into third world countries who hate us.
THIS ACT ALSO PROVIDES PROVISIONS FOR DISARMING THE PRIVATE CITIZEN.

First, Ill stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. Im the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. not win it]
Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.
I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.
I will not weaponize space.
I will slow our development of future combat systems.
And I will institute an independent Defense Priorities Board to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.
Is it mere coincidence that an anti-capitalist run for President at the same time Islamic Sharia finance and law is trying to make advancing strides into the United States? Is it mere coincidence this same candidate wants to disarm our nuclear capability at a time when terrorist Muslim nations are expanding their nuclear weapons capability? Is it mere coincidence this candidate wants to reduce our military at a time of global jihad from Muslim nations?

I think the PUMA’s will roar in PA, WI, OH, ME, and NH to name a few.
If this race was out of reach, the PUMA Effect would not be big. However, this is a close race. This IMO, will energize the PUMA base even more since they know that collectively they can influence the election. The numbers of PUMA’s could also swell as a result. Also the PUMA’s, like us are learning new things about Hussein everday. And they don’t like what they are hearing. That will motivate their base even more.
Lastly, the pollsters cannot measure the PUMA effect. They are ignoring it. Expect the pollsters like Zog, Ras, and Gallup to look like complete fools on election night. Their track record for accuracy in this election including the primaries has been AWFUL, espectially when they are polling Hussein.
“if the polls have underestimated the Democratic turnout”
__________________________________________
Yeah, I’ve been noticing alot of that in the polls so far.
Yes, they do exist in great numbers. Many are hoping for a Hillary candidacy in 2012. They are really motivated to beat Obama, who they think has hijacked the Democrat party and will destroy it if he wins.
I know some who finally realized they are conservative even though they have been Democrats their whole life, much the same as the original Reagan Democrats.
Wow! That’s an impressive list. Nice work!
I am highly skeptical of any substantial help for us from this quarter. It has always sounded to me like a very few, noisy people, and that's it. Democrats just don't vote for Republicans.
BOOKMARK !!!
BTTT !!
I especially like that point about not all former HC supporters having agreed with all of her positions—I hadn’t thought of that. Depending on what those positions were upon which they differed, they could be more amenable to voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. Such a great point.
They most definitely exist, and they are POed!
Barak, of the Chicago Machine, and the birthplace of the CPUSA, has moved the DNC to Chicago.
What would you think, and how would you feel, about the Republican Party if David Duke was the nominee, and he moved the party headquarters to New Orleans?
You would be rightly ticked off, and would work against the party.
I say...good on ‘em...and I’m a fan.
That speaks volumes.
18 million voted for Hillary in the primaries. The PUMAs have described themselves as 24% of 18 million or approx. 4 million strong.
These 4 million are the hillary supporters that vowed NEVER to vote for Obama-Biden.
Their vote is not FOR McCain-Palin; it’s against Obama-Biden. However, they have gotten fond of Palin and they respect the military service and Senate experience of McCain.
PUMAs describe their greatest strength as being in Pennsylvania. However, they are throughout the Unites States.
This weekend 70 Dems for McCain raised their own funding and went from their home of Chicago (Illinois!) to Pennsylvania to canvas door to door for votes for McCain-Palin.
God bless these Democrats!!!!
And the PUMAs finally understand that the media cannot be trusted. We have far more in common with them than it appears. G-d bless them for all the hard work they have done for McCain - Palin, as well as all of the sleuthing they have done (should have been the media’s job) finding out the truth about Obama. They may just win this thing for us.
I was never a Hillary fan but I have to be very impressed with her supporters!
“I belong to several Puma boards (just to keep up with the news and stir em up. LOL) I can tell you, they are plenty mad and very organized.”
Here’s what I wrote at our Canadian sister site:

“...I, for one welcome them, and their help. From their comments, most seem OK to me.

Get out and vote. Get your friends to get out and vote.
Guess you never heard of 'Reagan Democrats' then.
“Obama stole the election from Hillary in the rigged caucus system. They do not want the Dem party taken over by Obama and his people they detest him with everything they have.”
I find it ironic that the Clinton people got out-Clintoned by the Obama people.
That being said I hope they all break for McCain, as IMO this will be a very close election, a couple of thousand votes in the right state could make all the difference.
......Do you really think that PUMAs actually exist to such an extent......
It depends on the definition of PUMA. I thought PUMA’s were affronted Hillary women. This piece seems to make a PUMA any kind of disaffected moderate Democrat. That is a big difference in people.
There are lots f Democrats who just plain don’t like Obama. He is young, he is black, he has no experience, he is marxist, he is pacifist...... he is unacceptable.
From http://paganpower.wordpress.com/:
Voting with their heads not their skin. Three young black Republican men tell a stunned CNN host their reasons for supporting McCain rather than Obama.
zerO is terrifying.
The tactics of the wing of the Democrat Party that backs zerO are fascist.
McCain is a liberal Republican.
Hillary represents the centrist wing of the Democrat Party.
It is not just a LOT of people, it is a lot of people with experience in organizing, fundraising, writing for publication in the MSM and with good, solid connections to many more influential people who have followed the left off the cliff and suddenly realized there was no ground under them any longer. Many have realized that Republicans are not evil.
For example, Greta Van Sustern and her husband, a high powered Democrat attorney, are leading PUMAs. These people are the cream of the donks.
Never underestimate the power of betrayal to generate cold fury and the will to get even. There were Democrats who donated, organized and voted for W on the basis of national security. There are even many more PUMAs than Democrats for Bush. For everyone making noise, figure there are another 100 out there that they have converted. It is about love of country, belief in America and the rejection of fascism.
Besides lying to pollsters, they are encouraging voting straight Republican tickets to get rid of the donk leadership in Congress.
They are real, they are working harder than most Republicans, they are more politically savvy than most Republicans and McCain is just fine with them. Don’t sell them short.
I think 2008 will be known as the ‘year of the PUMA’. Having regularly browsed through hillaryclintonforum.net, a unofficial blog for clintonistas, since the start of the primary season I believe their influence will be susbtantial. This is probably as close as you will get to an internet random sample of her supporters. When the crunch came in June well over 90% went the PUMA path. I can only recall one poster (though there probably were a few more) advocating a transfer of allegiance to Obie.
Of course it is possible that the posters here had an atypically large representation of a small insignificant fringe of anti-Obie diehards. Not too likely though. This, and the straws in the wind from early voting in Nevada, Florida, and Calfornia lead me to believe that the PUMA factor will be substantial and probably outcome determinative.
A puma is a resouceful predator. It is patient, crouches down low, and then strikes with lethal and lightening fast efficiency. Grrrrrrrr.
hell hath no fury like a PUMA scorned. haha
Why I voted for McCain & Palin
Spot on, Sara. I am so glad to read honest truth. Thank you for putting this up and linking it around the web.
And then throw in some Reagan democrats and we stand a good chance.I just think they are a lot of dems out there that won’t go with this guy.
At first my vote for McCain was a pure protest vote. But as the campaign went on, I saw a stark difference between the love McCain has for this country and the love Obama has for himself and his quest for power. My gut tells me Obama is dangerous. When McCain added Palin to his ticket, my vote turned from a protest vote to a bona fide endorsement. She's smart, capable, sincere, energetic and tough. McCain was not afraid to add a competent woman to his ticket and that spoke volumes.
I live in NYC, so my vote probably won't make a difference. I've told family and friends that I'm not going to vote just to keep the peace. However, my conscience will be clear as long as I know that I did not contribute to the election of Obama. There are alot more of me out there, so I don't believe the media and their polls. They brushed us aside because we didn't conform to their view of Obama as the “The One”. They will hear us on 11/4.
McCain/Palin
Let's not give up hope!
Don't let them stop you from voting. Every vote counts!
Alicia - you sound like an official PUMA to me! Nobama!
I am one of them.
I have never voted for a Republican before, not even for a dogcatcher.
I voted for Dukakis, Clinton twice, Gore and Kerry.
Never in a million years could I have imagined that I would be here, on a Republican website, explaining why I think the Republican candidate is the best choice for president this year.
However, this was before the DNC decided to force the most inexperienced, unvetted, and deceitful candidate in history upon us.
Why would a democrat want to vote for a Republican, you may ask?
On the one hand you can vote for a candidate that is buddies with a unrepentant terrorist, a racist, hate spewing “minister”, and has bullies and thugs as supporters. This is a candidate that uses his lawyer goon squad to try to sue anyone that tries to inform us about his past, whether it is his stance on gun control or his votes on abortion. He calls this “smears”. He happens to be democrat.
Or, you can vote for a former POW who has been tested, proven, and has shown that he is a man of his word even when it is unpopular. This man happens to be a Republican.
The choice is clear.
This probably doesn't mean anything to you, but as a democrat I was shocked and appalled and angry that other DEMOCRATS were calling me a racist and a bigot for even questioning Obama.
Hold on a sec. Wait. Me, a racist? A democrat who (used to) supported affirmative action and “understood” the plight of minorities as a function of their poverty. All of a sudden, none of that mattered. Because I voted for Hillary, I was no better than the bitter, gun toting bible thumpers that I used to make fun of. Because I voted for Hillary, I was deemed a racist that must be converted to an Obot or destroyed.
If you had the misfortune to witness the voter intimidation and bullying that went on at the caucuses, and primaries you would not be laughing. You would see that exactly what I described is true.
I say this because, if you, as republicans and conservatives decide that the cause is lost and that you've decided to vote third party, not vote at all or, God forbid, vote for Obama to “teach the GOP a lesson” about nominating a candidate that is not conservative enough for your tastes, I beg you to reconsider.
Remember that Obama has a 500 million dollar war chest whose sole purpose is to disconcert you, convince you that O is inevitable, and that there is no way that McCain can win. His campaign knows that if you look at everything objectively, you will realize that this is not over and that the doubts about him are real and the smokescreen can only last for so long. That is why he wants you to vote early before you can change your mind.
If the Obama campaign can intimidate, demean, and purge dissenters from its own democratic party, what to do you think that he will do if he is president? Will he all of a sudden turn into the “hope and changey” guy that he promised to be or will he be the same person who breaks his promises as he did with campaign finance?
He broke his promises and nobody called him on it, not the Media, not his followers.
He is held to a different standard, and he KNOWS it.
With a filibuster proof majority he would be unstoppable. What else, besides, campaign finance, will he consider “broken” and in need of “fixing”?
Term limits?
Mayor Bloomberg already abolished term limits in NYC, is washington next?
I apologize for the long post but this is important and it needs to be said. This is perhaps an extreme example but I think it is apt and illustrates what I am trying to convey.
Remember that it was Hitler's own party that understood what a danger he was and that he needed to be deposed. They recognized that he was an excellent orator who could make the women swoon and energized the youth. He promised bread and circuses and prosperity, at a cost to their liberty. It was Hitler's own party members that recognized his madness and tried to unseat him, but it was too late.
Take it from a former democrat, folks. Don't stand by and let it happen. Get excited, vote, and volunteer and make a difference.
Stand up and fight. We PUMA’s are fighting pack to rid the democrats of the left wing hijacking. Please stand up and do your part.
Yes, we do exist, many of us are silent, many are not on the internet, and we should not be underestimated. I was an avid Hillary supporter, have voted a D ticket every election, but this year I am voting a straight Republican ticket. I don’t even care if I don’t know who someone is, if there’s an R next to their name, I am voting for them.
Why? Misogyny, nomination theft, and let’s face it, Obama is a dangerous guy. It comes down to country before party.
Why am I voting for downticket Repubs? It’s payback time for Dems who stabbed Hillary in the back, and if Obama, God forbid, is elected, I want a Repub majority in Congress to keep him in line. Dems have become far left, extremist quacks. Or, as others have said, I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.
There IS hope. Remember how all the polls were wrong again and again, and Hillary kept blowing Obama out of the water.
They know that if Obama wins, that the Obama faction will try to take over the Dem party completely, doing a Stalinist purge of anybody who ever expressed loyalty to Hillary.
WHOEVER wins, the Dem party will experience a purge, if not an internal civil war for control.
I sent my Dem mother-in-law in Florida a bunch of emails with links. She didn’t know about Hamas in Gaza running a phone bank for Obama, nor about Farrakhan proclaiming Obama a herald of the Messiah, nor about Odinga nor al Mansour. I’m hoping these open her eyes before Tuesday.
Genuine PUMA here. Saw a link to this at the Confluence. As a liberal, I respect this as a conservative space and have a login only to post on PUMA-related threads.
I am thoroughly disgusted at how the primaries were conducted and with the attitude of Obama supporters towards Hillary supporters and now towards Sarah Palin. They have behaved shamefully. I am now a registered independent, and will vote Nobama, although I decline to say what my choice will be. This is significant since I am among the demographic that should have been most enamored of Senator Obama.
I cannot possibly say how many of us there are or if we will change the election. All I can do is cast my one vote.
I think if you look around here, you will find more to agree with than you might think. If you see an offensive post, rest assured that unlike Daily Kos, Democratic Underground, Huffington Post and the like, it will almost assuredly be gone soon, as the moderators police this site very well.
