Town halls ban staff from using Latin words, in case they confuse immigrants[UK]
Daily Mail ^ | 02 Nov 2008 | Emily Andrews

They are well-worn phrases, repeated ad nauseam throughout the English language.

But local councils have now waged war on Latin words, banning staff from using them in writing or in speech.

The authorities claim the terms are elitist and discriminatory and have ordered employees to use wordier alternatives in documents or when speaking to members of the public.

However the ban has infuriated classical scholars who say it is diluting the world's richest language and is the 'linguistic equivalent of ethnic cleansing'.

Bournemouth Council, which has the Latin motto Pulchritudo et Salubritas - beauty and health - has listed 19 terms it no longer considers acceptable for use.

This includes bona fide, eg (exempli gratia), prima facie, ad lib or ad libitum, etc or et cetera, ie or id est, inter alia, NB or nota bene, per, per se, pro rata, quid pro quo, vis-a-vis, vice versa and even via.

Its list of more verbose alternatives, includes 'for this special purpose', in place of ad hoc and 'existing condition' or 'state of things', instead of status quo.

In instructions to staff, the council said: 'Not everyone knows Latin. Many readers do not have English as their first language so using Latin can be particularly difficult.'

Some Latin words are seemingly not so difficult and have escaped unscathed - PS (post scriptum - after writing or postscript), am (ante meridiem - before noon) and pm ( post meridiem - after noon).

Bournemouth Council, which has the motto Pulchritudo et Salubritas - meaning beauty and health - has banned staff from using 19 Latin words

Yeah ... had to read a lot of world history and WWII history in homeschool .... I remember one remark an American volunteer said ... he was a flight officer flying Hurricanes ... the Queen was reviewing the flight officers and she stopped at this American and asked him why he volunteered to come to England to fly against the Germans. He answered “Because there always has to be England” ... pity his service was wasted as was so many of those fine brave men and women .....

I did horribly in my HS Latin classes, but I have always believed that Latin is used because it is a dead language and therefore the meanings of the words and/or prases would never change.

Heart breaking but true. The English threw away 1000 years of civilization for political correctness. The same leftist who let Muslims flood into the UK are behind Obama. Aka Muslim Brotherhood funded by the Saudis.

Part of my family left England 200 + years ago and thank God. Sadly I no longer have any faith they will defend their civilization - it is pretty much over. English people are generally too nice and can be manipulated easily.

The other part of my family left Italy at least 150 years ago. I have more faith that the Germans, Austrians and Italians may defend western civilization. The Germans and Austrians did it in 1683 AD at Vienna with the help of the wonderful Poles and King Jan Sobeiski.

I’m a world history buff and I understand. My grandmother came over from Hungary right after WWII - she lived through that mess.

It’s the politicians that are burying England, not the people. European politicians will do what Nazi Germany couldn’t do and give themselves over to Islam because they don’t want to offend or get blown up ... they simply won’t fight.

I think we will. As one blogger here said “the tree of Liberty is in need of watering again”.

Would not the immigrants be more likely to understand the Latin phrases which are in universal usage vs the Anglocentric terms suggested as replacements? Or do not the dunderheads of the council grasp that simple logic? I think someone must protest against these bigoted Latinphobes. Are they saying that languages with primary Germanic roots are superior to Romance languages? Are they secretly regretful that Germany lost both World Wars? I say we find out.

Bournemouth Council, which has the Latin motto Pulchritudo et Salubritas - beauty and health - has listed 19 terms it no longer considers acceptable for use.

Catering to the least common denominator has been the trend since the Russian Revolution, which aimed at creating the "better man"; unfortunately it created, instead, the "lesser man", and the Bournemouth Council is the inevitable result. If we are all equal then, evidently, ignorance is every bit as valuable as knowledge and as striving for a better understanding of ourselves and our society.

Obviously, these sterling councilpersons are ignorant as dolmens; none has even heard of, never mind read A people's Tragedy: a History of the Russian Revolution, By Orlando Figes. A well meaning world event which failed utterly in its attempt to create a better humanity -- by appealing to the societal "least common denominator."

I see two solutons to this probem; and it is a problem.

Either that dysfunctional council needs to be replaced, or its citizens better be prepared for either totalitarianism or chaos, neither of which bodes well.

Methinks that a few dozen letters from the colonies might shake these idiots in the Bournemouth Council awake. using Latin and Greek phrases where appropriate, of course.

Islam and political correctness are destroying England(istan). Pathetic fools. I was listening to Mozart’s Requeim today written essentially on his deathbed and possibly his greatest composition. In Latin the choir signs about Confutatis and Maledictus or “when the cursed are confounded” while also beseeching the Lord “in my last hour.” Prayers to the Lord. Among the most beautiful music ever written and sung in Latin.

Tragic how western Europe especially the UK has lost it’s way and panders to political correctness and bows to the invading Islamists and other mongol hordes.

These fools are throwing away 1,000 years of civilization to embrace political correctness and Islam. A “culture” that has been stagnant and oppressive for 900 years.

The only thing that may save England is the Polish immigrants that have been refilling empty churches.
