Can Obama win popular vote but lose election?

WASHINGTON – It's a nightmare scenario for Democrats — their nominee Barack Obama winning the popular vote while Republican John McCain ekes out an Electoral College victory. Sure, McCain trails in every recent national poll. Sure, surveys show that Obama leads in the race to reach the requisite 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Sure, chances of Republicans retaining the White House are remote.

But some last-minute state polls show the GOP nominee closing the gap in key states — Republican turf of Virginia, Florida and Ohio among them, and Democratic-leaning Pennsylvania, too.

If the tightening polls are correct and undecided voters in those states break McCain's way — both big ifs — that could make for a repeat of the 2000 heartbreaker for Democrats that gave Republicans the White House.

What’s remarkable to me is that there was a bigger spread between Kerry and Bush in 2004 ..... and Kerry lost big time.

Obama will lose the popular vote and the electoral college, and there will be riots in LA, Chicago, Harlem, Detroit, etc...

I really don’t think this election is going to be that close.

No problem. Lock and Load. Mayors who won’t issue ball ammunition to the National Guard suffer the consequences.

Sure, the electoral college is what prevents NY, TX and CA from electing every President.

I don’t see that developing... but to answer the question: Yes. He will likely win the big cities where the welfare is concentrated, as do all Dems. Those by themselves won’t give him enough electoral votes.

I would almost prefer that Obama win the popular vote and lose the electoral vote. It would be another reminder that the Constitution still works “whether they like it or not” (to quote Gavin Newsom).

One thing that the press keeps forgetting is that Obama lost by double digits to Hillary in most of the battleground states (in the east). What makes them think he can carry those same states after pissing off half of the Democrats in those states? PUMAS are going to revolt and bolt for McCain—Big Time. The national polls might be fairly accurate, but the state by state are the ones to watch at this time.

I agree 100%! He is going to lose everything and in the end be the subject of an investigation on his contributions! Gotta love it!

Of course Obama losing means a complete overhaul of the electoral system is necessary. If Obama wins, it’s fine!

After Obama loses, it is my hope that all of the records which he has been hiding, regarding his college applications, U.S./Indonesian passport, place of birth — all come to light so that there is an admission that he was not qualified or mature enough to serve.
