You Biblical scholars, correct me if I am wrong. The Hebrews were freed from Egypt only by the leadership of Moses, and man who had been raised as an adopted son by an Egyptian priness and he had a heck of a time trying to motivate the children of Israel to return to their own religion, and head home. There was complaining and kvetching all the way.
Similarly, the Babylonian captivity did not end because the Hebrews were spritually enlightened by their bondage. It was because an outside invader (Cyrus the Persian) happened to come in and destroy the Babylonian rule. Only then could the Hebrews return home.
We indeed have lost much of our freedom.
I have a simple, somewhat humorous way of making this point without being too aggressive about it. When I want to encourage someone, I tell then, “Sure, go ahead. After all, it’s a partly free country.”
This slight modification of an old, familiar expression always gets attention, and a look of unaccustomed thoughtfulness will often result.
...and the ‘purer’ the democracy the more unstable the government. We are probably like a star going ‘nova’.
For those that don't know, a constitutional republic is sometimes referred to as indirect democracy. You've missed the point of the quotation.
