Swing Voters Don't Want Big Government
WSJ ^ | November 06, 2008 | PAT TOOMEY

Barack Obama and congressional Democrats won big on Tuesday night, but they should not mistake their victory for a big-government mandate. The evidence tells a very different story.

A poll commissioned by the Club for Growth in 12 swing congressional districts over the past weekend shows that the voters who made the difference in this election still prefer less government -- lower taxes, less spending and less regulation -- to Sen. Obama's economic liberalism. Turns out, Americans didn't vote for Mr. Obama and Democratic congressional candidates because they support their redistributionist agenda, but because they are fed up with the Republican politicians in office. This was a classic "throw the bums out" election, rather than an embrace of the policy views of those who will replace them.

Although currently held by Republican congressmen, all but one of these 12 districts we surveyed flipped to Democratic control Tuesday night. Collectively, President Bush carried these districts in 2004 with 53%. They are nearly evenly split in party affiliation: 40% Democratic, 37% Republican and 19% Independent. The poll surveyed 800 voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.46 percentage points.

Well, now is a helluva time to make that be known. Should have thought of that on Tuesday.

If that’s the case, swing voters must be the biggest morons on the planet.

Swing voters are even dumber than I thought then. Don’t want big government but elect a marxist who promises the biggest expansion of government in US history? Some people are too stupid to vote.

Well they certainly have an odd way of making their sentiments known.

I understand “throwing the bums out,” but McCain, for all his faults wasn’t one of them. So, instead we get worse bums than the ones thrown out.

I knew we were in trouble the minute the poll came out before the election that said that something like 35% of the American people still thought the Republicans were controlling Congress....(eye roll)

The MSM won this election. They spent 8 years telling people that the Republicans were the problem. Therefore, in 2006 and 2008, we had "throw the bums out" elections.

Now the Demcrats are in charge. The MSM will spend the next 4-8 years saying that everthing needs to change and we all need to sacrifice.

I, for one, think that the Swing Voters will come to believe this. That's why they are sheeple.

It's hard to blame swing voters for not being able to tell the difference between Democratic ultra super colossal mega government and Republican ultra super almost as colossal mega government.

I sometimes (Medicare part D, the Paulson plan) have a hard time myself, and I haven't voted Democrat for a national office in 30 years of voting.

I knew we were in trouble when Clinton looked the American people in the face, admitted to smoking marijuana, but denied inhaling...and people accepted that explanation.

The only thing that makes sense is that these clymers figure politicians lie so they expect Chairman Hussein won’t do what he promised. Einstein type logic right there.

It’s like saying “I only ate that 7-alarm chili because I wanted to clean my system out. I didn’t expect I’d get heartburn, too!”

Oh, I'm sure they won't. No. Not at all.

I thought we had this election in 2006!

Seriously, do these voters think they were being cute? Voting for Obama to punish the Republicans? Actually, I know of one person who did exactly that!
