Illegal Immigrants Walk Dangerous Path to Freedom
News Channel 5 ^ | Illegal Immigrants Walk Dangerous Path to Freedom | Alex Trevino

WESLACO, TEXAS - People are taking deadly risks to cross the border into the U.S. illegally. Their goal is to get just north of the Falfurrias checkpoint. That's where people scatter to places across the U.S....

...but it wasn't until our NEWSCHANNEL 5 crew encountered a group of illegals moving north in the middle of the night that we realized it's not a single person or a dozen crossing, it's a thundering herd of people. Hundreds of illegals are crossing in groups. Their footsteps are so consistent they create a drumbeat.

A group of 20 and their smuggler caught our crew by surprise. They passed them along train tracks near the river. In the nightfall, they couldn't see the trails, Border Patrol, or anything. Men, women, and children were walking in step with the smuggler....

The experience showed our...crew that smuggling has become a sophisticated network. Reporter Alex Trevino and photojournalist Trenton Downey decided to try the 60-mile journey north themselves. The physical toll was enormous. The crew carried extra water, food, and clothing....

Along the trip, our crew walked through thick, thorny brush and crossed barbed wire fences. In the last six hours of the trip, they came across sturdy ladders. Ranchers are trying to prevent damage to their fences...

A veteran federal officer, who used to work these trails, gave our crew instructions about which path to take. But in the heat and with little water, they easily became confused....The crew obviously needed help. They called and got an escort to safety...

The majority of illegals who make it to the last 60 miles are armed only with determination.

The ranchers providing stury ladders (!) incur a $10,000 fine if caught. The fence is being built in this area, but the locals have been fighting it tooth and nail. Hmmmm. Wonder who's profiting?

the immigrants will be running the other way. where they came from is much nicer by far when obama gets done with us.

Will someone in Mexico please tell these pathetic peons that there are NO construction jobs in the USA? And with the commodities bust, farmers and ranchers will have to do their own work instead of hiring illegals. Our failing economy can no longer prop up the Mexican government.

CLEARLY A FLUFF SYMPATHY PIECE to stir up amnesty and open borders now we have a new President. Where is the story on the unemployed white person or black person or Native American or even Hispanic American, this illegal alien displaced and how they are starving? Or the piece on the starving people in Africa or Burma or Nepal or places like that who can’t get to walk across to the USA border? Why do people south of the border gets special treatment and have no respect for our laws? If it were so horrible, they wouldn’t do it so no, I have zero sympathy for law breakers.

Illegally crossing the border to work under the table is now the definition of “freedom”.

Someone asked me how Obama was going to deal with the illegal immigrant problem. I told him that once Obama wrecked the economy, no one would want to come here—illegal immigration problem solved.

These ladders are on ranches north of the border. They are less expensive than having to constantly rebuild fences and round up cattle.

The Texas Border Volunteers hold watches on the ranches around the Falfurrias checkpoint.
