"There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that," Podesta said. "I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change. We need to get off the course that the Bush administration has set."
Executive orders "have the power of law and they can cover just about anything," Tobias said in a telephone interview.
On drilling, the federal Bureau of Land Management is opening about 360,000 acres of public land in Utah to oil and gas drilling. Bush administration officials argue that the drilling will not harm sensitive areas; environmentalists oppose it.
"They want to have oil and gas drilling in some of the most sensitive, fragile lands in Utah," Podesta said. "I think that's a mistake."

Stroke of the pen, law of the land.
By decree of the king!
Let’s all stock up on gas while it’s cheap.
The American people have no idea what they have done.
"Stroke of the pen. Law of the Land. Kinda cool."
Paul Begala, former Clinton advisor, The New York Times, July 5, 1998
The American people have no idea what they have done...
The other Americans have no idea what they have done.
Utah is fragile? What about the perps Barney Frank hangs out with?
Obama is gonna love the Patriot Act and the inherent powers of the President.
“They want to have oil and gas drilling in some of the most sensitive, fragile lands in Utah,” Podesta said. “I think that’s a mistake.”
I look forward to freezing myself to death in the name of The Messiah.
“Utah is fragile?”
Utah looks pretty sturdy to me.
Certainly more sturdy than many of the 4 wheel drive vehicles that attempt to conquer it!
January 30, 1933.
Yep, get ready for EO’s banning all kinds of firearm related imports , just like Klinton did . Here it comes ...
Congress? I don’t need no steenkin Congress!
I give credit to anyone who could tell what Podesta said on Mike Wallace’s show. He has more ah-ah-ah-ah’s than Obama! Very, very irritating to listen to the man - that’s why I left the room. He must have been the one who taught Obama how to speak - well, sort of!
Picking up where Bubba Clinton left off, I see. Tell me why we need Congress, again?? And, why aren't the Dems threatening Obama like they did Bush??
Oh, silly me, that's right, he's THEIR guy!!!
Seems like Utah’s Governor needs to excercise some executive power of it’s own, a preemptive strike, with a states rights case ALL ready to go.
I figure that by this time next year, some of the lights'll be turning on.
“Obama is gonna love the Patriot Act”——
too bad Bush didn’t have the foresight to see what might be the afterlife of the Patriot Act, which you’re suggesting might now be expanded to include those people, like us, who are critical of the President. Of course, that’s in effect the way the Left demagogued the meaning and purpose of the PA from the beginning, as nothing more than a veiled attempt to consolidate Bush’s power, when it was in fact what they would do with a Patriot Act, had they been the ones to formulate it. Now they will inherit it, and start going after US, who are then lumped in with the (non-existent, of course) Islamic terrorists the PA was all about. Funny how things work out. They might just go that far, it all depends of how they perceive the criticism that will come Obama’s way over a whole variety of other issues, like maybe the multitude of basic ones that got overlooked and wound up having no effect on keeping him from getting elected in the first place.
We won’t deserve it but everybody that voted for him will deserve the $7.00/gallon gas that’s coming.
If we still have a country when this obamination is over, the Rats will say “we were just taking orders”
Gas prices will be the least of our problems.
The tyranny begins...
I smell a revolution in the air, and it is not going to be a peaceful one. Arm yourself and stock up on can goods while you still can.
Could Bush issue an executive order rescinding the Act?
I’LL USE MY PHONE, E-MAILS AND LETTERS FOR IMMEDIATE IMPACT TOO!
Bush has issued a total of 274 Executive Orders todate in his 2 terms to this point:
- 165 in his first 4 term,
- 109 in his second so far.
Clinton issued a total of 364 in his two terms:
- 200 in his first 4 years
- 164 in his second 4 yrs.
You can bet to see Obama ‘out-do’ Clinton in this area.
God help us!
Not likely with the 52-48% margin. But, the Pres can use the EO to set policy for Federal land, Federal property, ANWR, offshore drilling in Federal waters.
Oh man when Bush did this it was Harry Carey, but The Messiah can do whatever he wants and it’s all good!
No Child Left Alive.
Down the Drain with B. Hussein.
I bet Obama is going to go farther and pardon crooks like Tony Rezko, the Weathermen, and maybe cop-killer Mumia. Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick too.
All I am hearing is how they want immediate reversal of the Stem Cell order. IOW lets take as many aborted babies as we can get our hands on and experiment with them. The hundreds of available lines that Bush allowed access too are obviously not enough... years of science have yeilded nothing in that arena, yet it seems Obama is so intend on destroying the morality of America by delving into what Many Americans feel is God’s work.
So if we are against this and if we protest it will we be called Racists, bigots, bitter Americans?
Biden gave it six months before their poll numbers were in the tank due to the manufactured apocalypse of their choosing (or something like that).
Gird your loins.
I expect an executive order on abortion the first day, just like clinton.
Also, probably, gays in the military.
Who needs that pesky Constitution and the other two branches of government? We Libs totally control them anyhow, or soon will!
Why not just send them all into fat retirements and save the money for more bread and circuses or jails?
Yes, certainly more jails. We will need them for the dissidents.
Or maybe we can just charge the relatives for the cost of the spent bullets and save on the bread and water?
Or maybe we can just put those shirkers and wreckers at hard labor in the arctic cutting quotas of lumber and mining salt for their moldy bread? It's not like it hasn't been tried and proven a successful policy before!
It is the whole ‘mandate’ thing. It wasn’t a landslide or a mandate.
I have never felt our country was in so much trouble as it is right now. I have also never felt so helpless.
I guess those Impeach 0bama websites that are already set-up are not a bad idea.
And all those Liberals, Democrats and the MSM were saying Bush was going to do that, suspend the Constitution and rule by Executive Orders ... The Obamination of America will start. First off I think guns will be banned, next no oil drilling anywhere ever ... this guy is starting to be real scary ... and what’s this “Office Of The President Elect”??????
Historical perspective on Presidential Decrees:
Marcos’ Martial Law
Monday, Oct. 02, 1972
TIME Magazine: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,906446-1,00.html
Without warning, police squads late last week walked into Manila’s newspaper offices and broadcast stations, ordered staffers to leave and posted announcements Stating THIS BUILDING IS CLOSED AND SEALED AND PLACED UNDER MILITARY CONTROL. Domestic air flights were grounded and overseas telephone operators refused to accept incoming calls. Finally, after several hours of mystifying silence, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos went on nationwide radio and TV to proclaim a state of martial law. Civil government would be continued, he said, but campuses would be closed. Restrictions on travel, the press and communications would remain in force until the government dealt with “a conspiracy to overthrow the government.”
It was a drastic step; martial law had never before been imposed in the Philippines, despite the country’s long history of social and political violence. And yet, though troops took up positions all over Manila, there were few other visible signs of emergency. Nightclubs, casinos and movie theaters remained open; shoppers were out in their usual numbers the next day. Filipinos accepted the measures calmly, even cynically, for they had been widely anticipated.
Only two weeks ago, in an atmosphere of rapidly increasing belligerence between the Marcos regime, its political opposition and a burgeoning Philippine revolutionary movement, the President warned that he would not hesitate to assume emergency powers if he deemed them necessary. He finally did so six hours after an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate one of Marcos’ chief aides, Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile. As the Secretary was heading home from his office in Manila, a carload of gunmen intercepted his car and riddled it with 30 shots; Enrile, who was riding with security men in a second car, was unhurt. The gunmen escaped unidentified.
Sorry ... but abortions are the VERY least of our worries now
