Activist seeks national holiday (Follow-up to Topeka Capital-Journal "Obama Day" story)
The Topeka Capital-Journal ^ | November 11, 2008 | James Carlson

Posted on 11/11/2008 3:02:49 AM PST by snowsislander

The local push for a national holiday commemorating Barack Obama's election to the U.S. presidency ricocheted around the Internet over the weekend, drawing criticism from notable conservative critics and nearly crashing The Topeka Capital-Journal's Web site with an influx of traffic.

The holiday drive is the brainchild of local activist Sonny Scroggins, who had planned to hold brainstorming sessions at the downtown McDonald's every morning and night until Obama's inauguration. He said "America grew up" on election night.

Scroggins, who is known for his sometimes quixotic crusades against social injustice, said voting results last week were among the "most profound things that have ever happened to humankind."

"I got Jesus, I got the Internet, and now I got Nov. 4, 2008," he said.

Once his idea was posted on the popular conservative Web site, the Drudge Report, it bounced around to other sites and was picked up by blogs from coast to coast and from Canada to the Netherlands.

Prominent conservative columnist Michelle Malkin mocked it on her Web site: "A national holiday in honor of The One? For heaven's sake."

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, for one, was receptive if not officially behind the idea. Hilary Shelton, the national vice president of advocacy, said Obama's election was of tremendous significance for "a community that was once enslaved."

"Certainly this very historic moment in our history is something that should be recognized, commemorated and celebrated," Shelton said.

The 145-word brief on The Capital-Journal's Web site Sunday found its way to the top of the Drudge Report, causing thousands of Internet navigators to flood the Topeka site.

By midmorning Monday, 30,000 people were viewing the story each hour. An average top-viewed story receives about 5,000 views each day. The influx of traffic, largely redirected from the Drudge Report, overwhelmed the Internet server and slowed down the entire site.

Follow-up to Sunday's story about "Obama Day".

A few more paragraphs into the article, the owner of the McDonald's franchise explicitly tells Mr. Scroggins "You absolutely do not have permission to do any kind of Obama planning" in her store.

"A national holiday in honor of The One?

Oh please, like National Black History Month, Martin Luther King day and Kwanza isn't enough.

If a Caucasian suggested a White holiday, what an uproar it would stir.

Seems there was someone else who was known for that? Oh that's right, Jim Jones, the Communist. He got a little over 900 to drink his Kool Aid and I figure this idiot has got better sheep to work with than Jim.

November 4, 2008

He's right. That is a date that will live in infamy.

“In America,” remarked Oscar Wilde long ago, “the young are always ready to give those who are older than themselves the full benefits of their inexperience.”

Well, appropriately enough, then, we have hired the inexperienced candidate, who has done nothing to deserve the job, and now some people want to commemorate the same callow candidate-elect before he has even served a single day in office.

It's not even putting a cart before the horse, it's arranging the cart before the horse is foaled.

I say Obama is so awesome, we should just declare his 12-year reign a stunning success, and he can go back home to Chicago NOW, and not bother with possibly messing up his legacy.

Typical, feel-good Leftist BS.

We usually award a national holiday to those who have actually accomplished something. That would be not just winning an election (through voter fraud, voter intimidation, lying about your campaign finances, illegal campaign contributions very likely from foreign sources), but actually doing something good for the country in that office.

We have national holidays for the Washington and Lincolns, not your average leftist democrat politician who lied and stole in order to win.

Topeka was home of the Menninger Clinic for many years.

For the benefit of those who may not know, the Menninger Clinic is the world's finest mental health facility.

A few years ago, the Menninger Facility moved to Houston.

Think it's possible they left at least one behind?

Apparently so; according to the story, "By midmorning Monday, 30,000 people were viewing the story each hour. An average top-viewed story receives about 5,000 views each day. "I suggest May 1"

I would propose two days: May 1 for the commies and April 1 for the rest of the fools (useful idiots) who voted for him.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the world on the behalf of Kansas. Except for a few urban areas, Kansas is reliably Republican. We do like to keep a few moonbats around, just to remind us what we need to vote for.
