WSJ: Obama may retain Bush interrogation policies, Gates as SecDef

Not so Changey.

President-elect Barack Obama is unlikely to radically overhaul controversial Bush administration intelligence policies, advisers say, an approach that is almost certain to create tension within the Democratic Party…

“He’s going to take a very centrist approach to these issues,” said Roger Cressey, a former counterterrorism official in the Clinton and Bush administrations. “Whenever an administration swings too far on the spectrum left or right, we end up getting ourselves in big trouble.”…

[H]e more recently voted for a White House-backed law to expand eavesdropping powers for the National Security Agency. Mr. Obama said he opposed providing legal immunity to telecommunications companies that aided warrantless surveillance, but ultimately voted for the bill, which included an immunity provision.

The new president could take a similar approach to revising the rules for CIA interrogations, said one current government official familiar with the transition. Upon review, Mr. Obama may decide he wants to keep the road open in certain cases for the CIA to use techniques not approved by the military, but with much greater oversight…

Yeah, but he’ll add to it in the form of his

“civilian defense force, as well funded as the military”

in order to keep true American dissenters in line.

Well, I guess it depends on exactly who he is interogating. The lefties are not really against rough treatment of enemies, if they can pick out who is the enemy.

Duh.

He’s gonna keep all the powers. He’s gonna put more troops in Afghanistan. He’s gonna keep the Pat Act. All of it.

I hope he does retain much of what has kept us safe since 9-11.

Because the tactics WORK!

Obama may be dumb, but he is obviously not stupid.

Retain Gates? I believe it when I see it. It would be a kick in the face of the anti-war left. They are a important part of his base. If his change was about keeping Bush’s SecDef Obama pretty much failed, unless he runs for greatest charlatan ever.

Running for a senate seat in Ill and then the US Senate is one thing...

Hussein Obama is in way over his head and is going to cause us a great deal of misery.

Running Chicago politics is not the same as operating on a global level.

Not a fan. They will use these powers domestically.

There is nanny-state controlling element in the Right that can be harnessed by socialists.

Recall that November 9-10-11 1938 (Kristallnacht).

The civil authorities were very useful in “keeping the peace” -— that is, arresting Jews who protested.

Of course he is. But since the MSM will never mention it, it won't be an issue. Let's face it, demmies can do everything that Bush did. If word doesn't get out, no one will know. The MSM will bury the exact same stories they blasted from their headlines to try and make Bush like a sadistic war mongerer. But when the holy one does it? shhhhh ... mums the word.

I have to wonder if Bush didn’t say “You’re in the big time now, buddy. I’ve got something to show you.” And Obama thought “Holy Crap! This is scary!”

Either he’s keeping the interrogation techniques because he understand’s the Muslim threat or He’ll need those techniques to quell the resistance.

It is certain that the Obama team is going to get a earful from the intelligence community. He would be a fool to ignore the community's warnings about the actual state of affairs vis a vis Al Qaeda in the U.S., Europe and worldwide.

Should the Obama team adhere to the very naive principles that they ran on for the purpose of pleasing their most left-wing supporters they would find themselves in deep trouble in short order. Al Qaeda will certainly exploit any sign of weakness by the U.S. In fact, Obama promised the left policies that would do that very thing. If he keeps that promise he will jeopardize his administration and risk a second term. I expect him to mostly renege on that promise because it will be in his own best interest to do so.

Obama may retain Bush interrogation policies...

He'll promise to only use them domestically, against suspected un-friends of the Marxist utopia.

Obama’s biggest problem will be keeping Nancy Pelosi in line. Harry Reid is Nancy’s boy, so if Rahm E. can keep Pelosi in check, then all will be well. So if they are going to leave the evil Bush policies in effect, then they’ll have to make sure Pelosi is ok with that. heh. Hypocrites. (but really this article doesn’t say anything definitive. it’s all speculation. what’s not speculation is that O. has to control Pelosi or he’ll be doomed.)

I'm with you on that one.

The truth is, the Bush appointees are much higher qualified and seasoned in their jobs, than anyone the Dems can come up with.

Anyhow, the backstabbing of their base begins. LOL!
