Barack Obama family likely to choose private schools The Obama family are considering sending their children to one of Washington's elite private schools.

Government schools in the area are among the worst in the country, set in some of the poorest, most crime-ridden neighbourhoods.
The couple have been urged to make a statement by spurning the private schools traditionally attended by children of the elite.
But it appears they are inclined to go private for their girls Malia, ten and Sasha, seven, and spend about $56,000 (£33,000) a year in the process.
Mrs Obama has toured Georgetown Day School and Sidwell Friends School, which Chelsea Clinton attended.

A good point. Securing them in a DC public school would not be easy. Heck it would be hard to protect them from internal threats let alone external ones.

I am a private school supporter so I have no issue with this. I think the Bush twins went to private school as well. Why not? I would not chance my kids on public school anywhere personally.

True! We are a third generation Catholic school attendee on my mom’s side. My poor dad had to go to public school and CCD...although where he lived the public schools were not what they are today.
Yes, good choice on the Obama’s part to opt OUT of public school for their girls.
But I hope he stops his hypocritical remarks, criticizing other people who also opt out of public schools.
If he is to gain any integrity as President, he must stop talking out of both sides of his mouth.

My parents were not observant Catholics but anything would have been better than some of the public schools I went to. Ugh.

After he pays his patriotic taxes, that $56,000 will be a big chunk of his income. That being said NO child should have to attend a DC school and guarding the Obama girls in that environment would take the US Army.

My parents put me in a private school when we lived in DC and I’m grateful for it. While I was the only white kid there, it was much better and safer than the public schools my neighborhood friends attended(also all black).

$28,000 per year for a private school, when the D.C. public schools are getting $19,000 per student from the taxpayers. Someone’s getting screwed.
Yes, Amy Carter went to Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School and Rose Lees Hardy Middle School. I don’t remember where she went to high school, though.
Yes, you are correct but that does not diminish the fact that the Secret Service Agents would have an easier time if the daughters were in a private school. And, yes the physical safety of the daughters is very important.

Democrats always vote against "vouchers" for the regular folks, and always for pricey, private schools for their own kids.
That’s not the point. Obama is dead set against school choice or vouchers or anything that gives parents options other than the public school system, for you or me. He is, a hypocrite.

I figure that will be a factor. Public schools are such jungles anyway. The secret service would have a horrible time. Best to send them to a private school and save taxpayers that expense.
You know it and I know it....but we can always homeschool. Osama’s kids would get beat up in public school anyway. Spare the secret serive some grief will ya? Send the little nimrods to a private little bratty school and let Rush have fun with that. I can’t wait to hear all the news that will come from Rush and Sean over it!

These private schools are inferior to the DC public schools, but the obama’s don’t want to give their kids an unfair advantage. That is very fair of them. /s

I agree on their attitude & hypocrisy, but from a security standpoint it does make much more sense for them to be in a tony private school “campus” without the hordes of urban thugs.....
Still, what I find more “interesting” is that in Chicago, where Obambi and Ayers had spent more than $100 million on “school reform” the Obamas sent their daughters to the U. of Chicago Lab School..... b/c of course even before there was any Secret Service issue the Chicago public schools that daddy had supposedly “reformed” were not fit for the Obama daughters.
Is Michelle Ma Belle going to tele-commute from the White House and then the 400k check gets send to her house? :)
