Goal Is to Restore Confidence in Law Enforcement Actions
As a transition team for the Obama administration begins work on a Justice Department overhaul, the key question is where to begin.
Political considerations affected every crevice of the department during the Bush years, from the summer intern hiring program to the dispensing of legal advice about detainee interrogations, according to reports by the inspector general and testimony from bipartisan former DOJ officials at congressional hearings.
Although retired federal judge Michael B. Mukasey, who took charge of the department last winter, has drawn praise for limiting contacts between White House officials and prosecutors, and for firmly rejecting the role of politics in law enforcement, restoring public confidence in the department's law enforcement actions will be central, lawmakers and former government officials say.
"The infusion of politics into the Justice Department and an abdication of responsibility by its leaders have dealt a severe blow," Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) and Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.), the panel's ranking Republican, wrote in an opinion piece last month. "Great damage has been done to the credibility and effectiveness of the Justice Department."
Ron Klain, who was chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore, said that the preelection brainstorming sessions of Democrats who want to fix the Justice Department sound like "an escalating composition of woes," not unlike the health-related talk at his mother's mah-jongg games. "Oh, my knee; no, my back; no . . . " he moaned over audience laughter at a recent luncheon held by the American Constitution Society.
Topping the list of concerns is the Office of Legal Counsel, a once obscure operation whose advice guides some of the government's most sensitive and controversial policies, from domestic wiretapping to the appropriateness of handing out public funding to religious

Gore Lick is already putting new walls up in the building.
How many US Attorneys do you think will get fired?
This is the first shot-over-the-bow that Neobama intends to turn the JD into full court press liberal issue advocacy and conservative hunt/hang vigilante organizatin.
It ain’t going to be pretty...but at least we’ll have “Thank you Sarah Palin” ads on TV...
Second, do not replace the current US Attorneys, but keep them all and refuse to hire or fire any of them based on Political considerations. This was the standard attempted to fight just 8 dismissals. Any, dismissal at this time will lead to the loss of confidence in the Justice Department.
Third, Disable the Patriot Act and all of the enhanced countermeasures intended to halt Terrorist activities which affect commerce and airline travel and such and still maintain the safety and security of the American people. This is something the Democrats claimed was easy when they weren't in power. Our confidence depends on them making good on this promise.
I could ask for more.. but this is a good start.
As I recall, politicization of Justice was a Clinton specialty also. Sadly, it seems it will be standard practice now for decades to come as each party seeks to reverse the biases of the prior one. But Clinton started it! Nyaaahh, nyaaaah.
I would think Obama, Dodd, Schumer, Gorelick, and Frank are all indictable for home loan fraud. And the cherry on top, the guy who gave them the loans.
Hey, where is Janet Reno when you need her. Maybe she could attack the Heritage Foundation with tanks and flame throwers.
“Jamie Whorelick, please pick up the red phone!”
Ask...and you'll get kicked off the plane.
Our Glorious PravdaPress has not the stones to ask.
I hope he gets investigated if he fires the prosecutors after this “political planning and pressure”. ha ha ha......
Too bad Bush didn’t overhaul the justice department.
Like the Washington Post's goal of restoring its function as a newspaper.
There will be not a peep out of the Media while hundreds if not thousands are fired and the ranks filled with Obama thugs and “well meaning” white trash koolaid drinkers.
Now that we know the Media is in the tank for Obama, and the “Republicans” lack the will, intellect or balls to to stand for ANYTHING — who will stand guard over our Freedom?
Is this going to be the circumstance our Founders feared - and call into play the REAL reason for the 2nd Amendment?
Bubba cleared the decks and replaced prosecutors and no one winced. Bush tried to can a few Clinton appointees and his AG was vilified. Barry probably walks in with a majority of Clinton appointees. Not much of a delta to correct.
The theory was that Clinton wanted to stop a couple of prosecutors, so he fired them all to disguise what was happening. I think the ones that Bush caught so much grief for firing were his own appointees, and that most of them were fired for an adequate reason (like poor management style) but a couple of them may have been fired because someone complained about them (Sen. Domenici in one case). I don’t think anyone has shown that any of Bush’s firings were done to stop an investigation or had that effect.
TOTAL NONSENSE
Dear Red,
you forgot the “Barf Alert” warning. In this case is should have been mandatory.
Hugs, Satindolz
Total B/S.

We have to overhaul a whole department. It's so much work!
Waaaaaahhhhhh!
The first thing they will do is fire all the Bush appointees.

How The Rule Of Law Was Subverted - The D.A. Massacre
It all started with the “D.A. Massacre” at the U.S. Justice Department. The Clinton administration in 1993 fired all U.S. Attorneys and replaced them with loyal cronies.
I can see it now: mandated quotas for arrests (no more than 5% black, 10% Hispanic...”Hey, you need to up your white count for this month!”) Crime reports and APBs will not be allowed to mention physical appearance or other racist descriptions (”skinny,” “community organizer”). Only then can The People (you know, Democrats, the only ones who count now) have their faith in law enforcement restored.
