The Coming War Between Producer and Taker

There is a story floating around the Internet about a teacher who decided to hold a mock election for president in her 5th grade classroom. The gist of the story is that she instructed the class to pick several possible candidates for president on each side, as a kind of primary election. Then the class voted for one candidate out of each of the two groups of candidates. The names of the two finalists were Johnny and Mary. The teacher then told Johnny and Mary to give a speech about what they would do as president. Johnny got to go first. He gave a long speech about how he would follow his principles and always do a good job. Mary gave a very short speech in which she said as president, she would give everyone in the classroom an ice cream cone. Mary won hands down. When Mary was pressed for how she was going to pay for the cones, she said she would require that each kid with rich parents would have to pay because the poor kids didn’t have any money; to which the kids with the rich parents yelled, “..... why do our parents have to pay?” One little kid in the back of the room, rose from his desk and told the teacher in a plain, emotionless voice, ”such a plan is in violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.” The teacher was

I got that email but it didn’t include the part about the 14th amendment. Food for thought.

The child brings up a point that I have long held, that a progressive tax scheme is a clear violation of the 14th Amendment.

Now that we have conservative majority on the Supreme Court, would it be possible to bring before SCOTUS a suit that strikes down the existing tax code?

At the very least the situation we have is unhealthy, with half the people paying no taxes and having no real stake in the system. The real answer is that a modern state has to have some sort of a safety-net welfare system but that such as system cannot in any way resemble vote buying or involve kept voting blocks, and cannot stand ordinary morality on its head; our system does all of that.

Unhealthy to the system is an understatement. Majority rule is mob rule in the case of progressive taxation. The framers were somewhat concerned about tyranny by the majority and that is why they put in a system designed to negate that from happening including indirect election of Senators and the electoral college for Presidents. The popular election of senators of course began long ago unfortunately. A move to disband the electoral college in favor of a popular election of the president will be the end game for sure.

"A move to disband the electoral college in favor of a popular election of the president will be the end game for sure."

Very true and if they turn the states over to a President who is not eligible, the process has already failed.

If we’re going to keep the EC, then some allowance has to be made for changing situations and demographics. At present for instance, the entire rest of Virginia outside of NOVA is basically disenfranchised, as are the people in whatever rational parts of California might remain. Virginia needs to split NOVA off as a separate state.

I like how the author raises the point of how the producer eventually says “Screw this” and leaves.

It’s amusing that politicians and the like think they can keep throwing bills at the “rich” and that they’ll just keep taking them and paying them out of the goodness of their hearts.
