Boehner Assails Auto-maker Bailout; Hopes dim for quick action

WASHINGTON -- The prospect of a government bailout of General Motors Corp. before the end of the year dimmed Thursday, with a leading Senate Democrat pointing to a lack of political will for a package and the top House Republican assailing the plans.

See what Ford, GM have been up to in recent years as their stock price and sales declined. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said he knew of no Republicans who would support the Democrats' $25 billion proposal and said he was disinclined to move a bill without bipartisan support.

"I'd want to be careful about bringing up a proposition that might fail," given that a rescue plan would likely fare better under a President-elect Barack Obama administration, Sen. Dodd (D., Conn.) told reporters on Capitol Hill. "There's some political considerations that need to be made over the next few days."

Prominent Republicans have questioned bailing out Detroit's long-struggling auto makers, and partisan differences threatened to derail the Democrats' plans. House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio said Thursday that a multibillion-dollar rescue of Detroit auto makers would be "neither fair to taxpayers nor sound fiscal policy" without requiring dramatic reforms of the companies.

Translation: the Democrats need the RINOs to cover for them.

It wouldn’t hurt to email Boehner to indicate support for this position.

It wouldn't hurt at all but too many Freepers are busy tarring and feathering the guy and stamping "RINO" on his forehead.

The DemocRats and their Unions need the RINOS for cover.

So the DemRats can place all the blame on the Repubs when the Unions abscond with all the money! (Except for the donations to the DemRats).

They are spending billions for people to sit in "the rubber room." Fark ’em, they are too big (and bloated) NOT to fail. Let Toyota and Honda build the cars.

I know. It's disappointing. It seems to me that we would be wise to fight these battles one at a time, even if we view the front man as imperfect.

Correct, because they know it will not fix the problem and the incompetent management of GM would be back in three months.

Support from the grassroots for a job well-done?

Unheard of. All there is is whining and wailing.

The democrats have the votes, they don’t need GOP assistance on this scam.

Even if President Bush grows a spine and vetos it, Obama can sign it after January 20th.

But to do that means taking full responsibility for one’s actions, it will be interesting to see what happens if the Republicans hold the line and make the dems vote for their “principles” or whatever they call their bailout of the UAW.

Good point.

Most are looking for a utopian figure to lead us all into perfection.

It's not going to happen. The grassroots are going to have to do some heavy lifting, not leave it all to Congress.

Many of the grass roots couldn't even find it in themselves to get off their butts and vote this time.

If they file Chapter 11 and reorganize like Kmart did, it would screw the remaining shareholders but like Kmart they would survive. Kmart bought Sears within a very short period after Chapter 11. Must not hurt business much.
Taxpayers should not have to pay for this mess. The auto industry with unions would be in the same mess in short order. Let the unions that bought the election buy the industry out of this mess.

Boner is trying to shore up support and silence critics with a bold move aimed at appeasing conservatives.
Don’t fail for it!
Boner must go!

Under Boner’s ‘leadership’ since taking over as Majority Leader (remember those days?) in February 2006, Republicans have lost 20% of their House seats in consecutive historic defeats.

The idea that Republicans would even consider keeping on a leader with a losing record like that is INSANE. Repeating the same actions and expecting a different outcome is the definition of INSANITY.

STOP THE INSANITY NOW!

The stock market started going up today when there was a byline saying that getting Pubbie support could be a problem...

That is exactly right. If someone who doesn't pass the purity test is out there fighting a fight I want to win, that we need to win, I'll get behind them. Old Indian saying: don't cut off nose to spite face, you wind up with no nose.

And I for one appreciate the bold and positive move.

If they put a better candidate up...fine.

If not, Boehner is in and I will support him.

Me too.

Too many whiners on this board.

I'm not looking for a 100% ACU rating before I support someone. If a person supports the majority of the positions I think are right that's enough for me.

When did perfection become a standard for holding office in DC?
