Skip to comments.SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."
The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.
"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.
"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."
During the 2008 campaign, many bishops spoke out on abortion more boldly than four years earlier, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. A few church leaders said parishioners risked their immortal soul by voting for candidates who support abortion rights.
But bishops differ on whether Catholic lawmakersand votersshould refrain from receiving Communion if they diverge from church teaching on abortion. Each bishop sets policy in his own diocese. In their annual fall meeting, the nation's Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

Call me stunned. Finally.
There is hope.
Awesome. About time.
Now excommunicate Kerry, Kennedy and Pelosi openly...
WOW!!!! I was SHOCKED at first......but the man is RIGHT!
Wish it had been said before the election.
Knowing this priest and his parish, I can assure you that they’d heard it before. St. Mary’s Greenville is a special place, and he’s a special priest.
The actual bulletin article from Father Jay Scott Newman can be found here http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2131732/posts
I hope the bishop had their donation money because after that his powerful donors won’t be writing more checks there some cathoic who dont’ want be preach too
Obama supporters already worship at the altar of the Messiah so what’s their problem?
He may very well have warned parishoners before the election that their vote would have consequences. There’s no way that story would have been reported, though. The msm needed the CINO vote to go to 0bama too badly.
This guy has courage...Congrats to him.
Let the excommunications begin!
Naw... St. Mary’s isn’t like that. We have several conservative traditional churches up here, and they are growing growing growing.
Most of the parishes up here take an active role in the pro-life movement.
For a few weeks up to the election, our church had a “graveyard” of crosses and several signs saying “vote pro-life” at the entrance driveway, which is on a fairly busy road. You couldn’t miss it.
This guy will cave, and his bishop will tell him to. Maybe I’m cynical, but this guy will drive parishioners out of the church and the hierarchy won’t stand for that or the decrease in cash flow that will follow them leaving.
Its nice to know there’s still a few Catholics left in the priesthood and hierarchy.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
brave man - he will suffer
Well I hope he doesn’t get transfer to Frisco or Los Angeles apparently he lose lots of money from wealthy pro choice donors
I'm only half-stunned. Had he said "we will refrain from offering parishioners Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama", I'd be fully stunned.
No he won’t.
Secondly, we are actually without a bishop right now. Our (former) Bishop Baker is very conservative and is now the Bishop of the diocese of Birmingham. Additionally, our archbishop is conservative too, and he and Bishop Baker and another bishop were the 3 that wrote the letter during the ‘04 election stating Catholics like Kerry should be denied communion.
40 million purnishments prevented from taking their first breath in the past 20 years.
Why do you keep saying that nonsense?
Wow, what an impressive lady!
Denying communion because of who someone voted for? Many people didn’t even think about abortion when they voted for O or any dem for that matter. They voted for a variety of reasons. While I like his stand against abortion I find his reasoning idiotic. Sorry. This one goes in my stupid file.
If you are Catholic and do not see the logic in what he says, then you are stupid.
The biggest donors in the Church are orthodox. They donate much, actually believe what the Church teaches and never miss Mass.
Please send Father an email of appreciation and prayers for him to stay strong...he is right! I sent one!
Are you Catholic?
So much for looking to the Church for guidance. I was amazed to learn that my mother's priest, whose parish is in one of the most conservative counties in TEXAS, completely washed his hands of this issue. He held an all night vigil the night before election day, in which he invoked the parishioners to pray that God's will be served by the peoples' choice. Then she went and voted for OBAMA! She was amazed when I told her about Obama's votes on BAIPA. She knew nothing. The priest had told his flock nothing.
Well, an important thing to consider about all of this, is that if the priests and bishops do not do this, and they knowingly give these unrepentant people communion, they are also guilty of allowing them to partake in communion, and taking damnation upon themselves.
God will take care of his own. God bless the bishop.
Great decision! Let’s see how long the Priest can make it and whether or not the Priest will succumb to the pressure of the liberals.
This is when we need to stand up for our principles, folks.
If you are a CHRISTIAN and do not see the logic in what he says, then you are stupid.
And then some....
I hope other priests do the same...it’s about time. Bishops are also coming down hard.
We will suffer together. It has gone on long enough. Little pain compared to what the little ones have gone through.
My pastor until I moved from SC. Fearless and smart as a whip.
If you’re a Catholic, you know that most priests are pretty lame homilists - if you get a good sermon, it’s the exception, not the rule. You just don’t generally get the lively, fiery preaching you see in a lot of Protestant churches.
Newman didn’t have a Billy Graham style, but he was an excellent public speaker, and his sermons were always well-thought-out and very incisive. And amazingly enough - given his background - very old school Roman Catholic - you would have thought he was a pre-Vatican II Catholic.
In fact, Newman grew up in a conventional Southern Protestant household (I’ve forgotten the denomination), became an atheist in high school, went to an Ivy League school (Princeton?), and in college returned to Christianity as an orthodox Catholic.
Having lived a good portion of my life in the heart of the Southern Baptist Bible belt, I have no doubt that those Southern Protestants who’ve made the move to Rome have been a real benefit to the Catholic Church - Newman’s a prime example. And I have nothing but admiration for those Protestants who’ve made common cause with Catholics against the corrosive secular influences eating away at our culture, abortion being the worst.
We must obey the law of God before the law of man. Simple as that.
Some of the strongest Catholics I know are those who have come from other faiths.
He must endeavor to get it through to their thick skulls why a Christian can never support the culture of death. That there are no “proportionate” reasons to make voting for a pro-abort acceptable.
There are NO collection of positive attributes that outweigh being a supporter and promoter of genocide, which is what the abortionists are guilty of--genocide.
He also has to be prepared to loose half his flock or more.
Sadly most bishops would stop him.
Please FreepMail me if you want on or off my Pro-Life Ping List.
Awesome. I hope he is ready for the firestorm to follow and doesn’t back down.
Wow I know many people think the Catholic Church is too powerful but even I never suspected they knew who one voted for.
