Thawing Fuel For Palin's Pipeline

Energy: Sometimes, America lucks out. From the Arctic, a new energy source has emerged called frozen gas. It could cut prices and bring independence. We hope Democrats and Republicans can work together on this.

A new study by the U.S. Geological Survey shows that 85.4 trillion cubic feet of frozen natural gas crystals lie buried beneath Alaska's icy North Slope, a region where the crude production peaked in 1988 and had to be replaced by imported oil.

The frozen gas, known as gas hydrate, is a new Made-In-U.S.A. energy source that's nearly three times the 30 trillion cubic feet of estimated U.S. reserves from conventional gas sources; it had not even been counted in current estimates of domestic energy reserves.

Officials say the frozen gas accounts for 11.5% of the volume of known recoverable gas in the U.S. and could heat 100 million homes for a decade. The country currently uses 23 trillion cubic feet of gas a year for heating, agriculture and industrial uses, but will see demand rise 20% in the next decade, according to Energy Information Administration estimates.

"The hydrates have more potential for energy than all other fossil fuels combined," Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne told a news conference.

It's also dirt cheap, producible at less than $10 per million British thermal units, even less than that with advancements, USGS director Mark Myers told Bloomberg.

It burns much cleaner than petroleum or coal, making it theoretically acceptable to those who obsess over environmental concerns. It can be produced with existing technology, and retrieved in the next decade. That means it could serve as a bridge to other cleaner alternative energy sources that are still in development for viability.

We have the ability to move from gasoline to natural gas in less than 10 years. Governor Palin needs to start thinking “leverage”.

We’ll see. I don’t believe that “the one” wants us to be energy independent. I think that he wants us to be dependent on our enemies for oil and thus weak.

I think so to, and then expect the price of gas to rise to $10 per gal. We will know who to blame then, don’t we?

It makes an excellent motor fuel in addition to heating your home.

As I recall, this is still only 10 years worth.

I think its great anyway, but it’s not a solution by itself.

There are also large methane hydrate deposits off the gulf and east coast.

There is a theory that underwater landslides allowing this gas to meet seawater and then off-gas through the sea into the atmosphere is one of the causes of lost vehicles in the Bermuda Triangle...The bubbling causes static electricity, and the fuel-rich air kills the engines, and the bubbles also sink the ships.

So, drill for the methane hydrates off the East coast and save the world from the Bermuda Triangle!! (Cue “Twilight Zone” theme song).

Yes it does make great fuel for autos, high octane and very clean burning. I just don’t much hanker to be driving around with a tank in the trunk that is pressurized to 3,000 psi. KABLAMO in a big way if it gets ruptured or developes a contained leak.

The Russians have designs for liquid natural gas aircraft. I think those would be a good idea, as there are less apt to have crashes, and most leaks would boil away before it reached the ground.

Obama will make crude oil exploration illegal. The cap and trade bill seems invetible. Once in effect the costs to operate electric power will be prohibitive.
Businesses will fail by the dozens.

It’s purely communist.

I never heard anything except pain and suffering from him.
