Fire Forces Evacuations, Burns Homes in Sylmar Area

Sayre Fire is near the 210 Freeway in Northern Los Angeles.

A dangerous, fast-moving brush fire in the Sylmar section of the San Fernando Valley, spread by gusting 50 mph winds has now burned at least five homes and is threatening several more, City Fire Department spokesperson Melissa Kelly said today.

So far there are no reports of injuries to residents or fire personnel, said Kelly.

The blaze ignited about 10:30 p.m. in the dry, brushy hills above 13000 W. Sayre Street near Shablow Ave, and has so far consumed more than 500 acres.

Burned 100 acres but only three houses.

Until these fires actually hit a populated area, I don’t really consider California fires news anymore....

The Sylmar fire is in a moderately densely populated area, more than 70 homes are burned at this time, though that number will be rising as the 70 wouldn't even account for the mobile home park firefighters had to abandon to the flames, and has reached into areas that are not normally considered fire risks, leaping the 210 and the 5 freeways.

This link gives a pretty detailed map of the present evacuation area, though firefighters have expressed the desire that anyone living within ten blocks of it should get out of the way, or be ready to be evacuated at a moment's notice.

Well, since you're from Kansas, I'll give you a break, but where have you been???
Many of these fires hit populated areas very hard, destroying hundreds of homes. Do you remember the awful fires of October, 2003 that burned through vast populated areas of San Diego and Riverside County? How about the Laguna Beach firestorm of 1993, that burned almost 400 homes to the ground? Or the Malibu fires of 1993 and 1996?

How about just two days ago, when 100 luxury homes were destroyed near Santa Barbara? I could go on and on...

Let me tell you, this is BIG news out here in Los Angeles. Thousands of people are wondering whether their homes will still be there when they finally get to leave the evacuation centers.

What's that about Chickens and Roosting ?

Next time Texas and the gulf coast gets blown into Oklahoma by a massive super hurricane, or when the floods return to the midwest, everyone in California will be sure to yuk it up at you classless slackjawed morons...

The reality?

That will never happen, and we'll wish you all the very best, and likely send in help, equipment and assistance.

Gezzz..

Showing a house now that is just catching on fire and it is picking up speed as the firefighters put it out, for now. So sad. Prayers! No serious injuries is the best news!

Good Morning from Eagle Rock. WOW... now I hear a new fire in Chino?
Just been watching live feed about Sylmar. Daughter was evacuated two days ago from her home in Montecito!! Winds were bad this morning here in ER but are calm now.

We live up against the foothills in Eagle Rock and always feel apprehensive when it gets real windy.

You’ll be happy to know that the fire has moved deeper into the City of L.A. and that more homes are burning.

Is it news now?

You’ve obviously never seen a California fire. If you knew people (as I do) who lost homes in recent fires you would stifle your snide, provincial remarks. California doesn’t get rain 6 months per year. On the fringes of cities near mountains, the brush & trees are tinder dry by the end of hot summers. Fire here IS A BIG DEAL.

As much as I despise California’s socialists, I empathasize with the people who have to leave their house on short notice with the only the shirt on their back.

People I know just lost their homes yesterday when over 100 homes burned in a firestorm in the Santa Barbara fire.

That’s not “just” a major substation.

That’s the southern terminus of the 500kVDC Pacific DC Intertie. That’s the line that brings down huge amounts of power from the hydro damns in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia River HUGE amounts of power.

If that power is interrupted... heh. You’re going to see more than just rolling blackouts. At full capacity, the DC intertie is transmitting about 3,100 MW.

Most Californians are not only provincial in that they’ve never seen a Nevada range fire burn a half-million acres, they’re the people funding the environmentalists who make these fires common policy. They care not a thing for 100’s of thousands of acres of forests, rangelands and pasture that burn every year across the west - thanks to their minions in the Sierra Club, NRDC, Forest Guardians, et al.

As such, I reserve the right to cast any aspersion I wish upon these unctuous pecksniffian environmentalists. They’re getting what they have rightfully earned. They all like to talk about karma in California.

Well, they’re getting their karmic credit card bill.

Lots of blackouts are now occuring here in LA. Mid-City area has no power.

Lots of traffic lights out and freeways are clogged because some are closed near the fire area. Winds are still way too strong...

Oakhills Mobile Home Park where media and stuff are because a lot of places have burned (off of 210) has been asked to immediately evacuate because it is now considered a crime scene.

They aren’t saying what, but assuming they’re thinking something related to the fire.
