Gregory B. Craig, a well-known Washington lawyer who quarterbacked President Bill Clintons impeachment defense, has been chosen White House counsel by President-elect Barack Obama, according to Democratic officials.
Craig is intimately familiar with the president-elects record because he played the role of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in debate preparations.
The officials said Obama has settled on Craig but were not sure when the appointment would be announced.
The choice gives the president-elect both experience and loyalty. During the primaries, Craig was an early Clinton alumni defector to Obama. Columnist Robert D. Novak reported back in the winter of 2007 that Craig had told him he was impressed with Obama when he first met him at the home of investment banker Vernon Jordan, an intimate friend and supporter of the Clintons.
Craig was an Obama foreign policy adviser during the campaign. At the start of the Clinton administration, he had been the State Departments Director of Policy Planning, the head of States in-house think tank. He also was senior adviser on defense, foreign policy and national security to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).
The White House counsel, among the most powerful members of the West Wing inner circle, serves as the presidents lawyer, giving him legal advice and handling pardons and conflict-of-interest issues.
Craig, 63, is a partner at Williams & Connolly and a protégé of the late Edward Bennett Williams, the legendary Washington power lawyer. His selection adds to the surprisingly large number of Clinton White House veterans who are at the top of the Obama roster.
Craig, who had been friends with Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham at Yale Law School, was recruited for the impeachment job by John Podesta, then deputy White House chief of staff and now a leader of Obamas transition.
A Washington Post profile in 1998 by Lloyd Grove and John F. Harris reported: Craig brought along his best bedside manner when Clinton summoned him to the White House residence on the night of Sept. 10 the day after independent counsel Kenneth Starr's lurid report to Congress was published on the World Wide Web. On a balcony overlooking the South Lawn, Clinton and Craig sat talking for two hours.
Among Craigs other high-profile cases: successfully representing Elian Gonzalez' father, a Cuban, in his efforts to regain custody of his son; and representing U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in connection during the Volcker Commission's investigation of the Oil-for-Food Program at the United Nations.
From Craigs official biography: In September 1998, President Clinton appointed Mr. Craig to be Assistant to the President and Special Counsel in the White House where Mr. Craig served as quarterback of the President's team that was assembled to defend against impeachment. Mr. Craig was also a member of the President's trial team in the United States Senate and presented the President's defense with respect to Count One during that trial.
In 1997, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright appointed Mr. Craig to be one of her senior advisors, and he served the Secretary as her Director of Policy Planning during the years 1997 to 1998.
For five years (1984-1988), he served as Senator Edward Kennedy's Senior Advisor on Defense, Foreign Policy and National Security issues.
Mr. Craig also has taught trial practice at both Yale Law School (1975-1976) and Harvard Law School (1981-1984).
Do the Clintons own this guy?
So, he was chosen because he stood there like a dottering old tree trunk who couldn't articulate his own health care plan coherently? Maybe there will be a place in the cabinet for the real John McCain. Secretary of Amnesty perhaps?
Ever more Clinton retreads.
It makes sense to have a guy who’s defended an impeachment.
They might as well just give Bill back the front door key. Next Monica will get her old job back.
More “Change” for the Hopers.
LOL. Fine with me.
That depends on what the definition of “change” is; is.
More Change You Can’t Believe In!
What is this?? Seems everyone Obama has picked for his administration are Clinton administration retreads! So much for a new fresh change, huh?
It appears so. Some of the picks you can understand, but Greg Craig? This is "change?"
Pardon. I have to go look for my tinfoil hat.
What is the definition of “change” again? How soon will he appoint Franklin Delano Raines head of Fannie Mae again?
Ping me when Obama picks a new face for his hope and change.
Wasn’t he Elian’s father’s attorney?
We won’t know the legacy of the Clintons for decades.
Never mind, I scanned the article again and saw the reference to Elian’s father.
A definite walking, talking, sociopathic clown act if there ever was one
Craig is definitely a dangerous man ~ count on him being the Castro brother's direct conduit to Obama. No doubt Craig will shoot him if the Castros want him to.
Coming out of Chicago’s corrupt political machine, Obama knows he’ll need a sound legal mind around him. A loyal consigliere.
“... Next Monica will get her old job back.”
She will be a “mouth piece” for the Obama Administration.
“Do the Clintons own this guy?”
Makes you wonder...Is Obama really the Manchurian Candidate...what surprises lie in wait for him?
Everyone he knows is a terrorist, communist, or neighbor. Some are all three.
“More Change You Cant Believe In!”
You mean the more things change the more they stay the same.
dialup sucks, you took the words rightout of my keyboard.
Greg Craig is the son of a bitch who represented Fidel Castro against Elian Gonzalez’s family. I don’t want to die anytime soon, but I’ll be relieved when I do get to leave this world, where darkness seems to triumph so often.
The Sandinistas do.
Don’t push this yet. We wait until he has picked the Secretary level appointment. And them - bam - spell it out for the media.
Don’t tip our hand. Let him think no-ones noticing.
Are we going to get even one person we don’t already know is corrupt? Geez, there has to be some shady Chicago background guy to give us something to do.
No doubt his grand success in returning Elian to the loving arms of Fidel in the Workers Paradise of Cuba makes him eminently qualified in the eyes of our Dear Leader, Chairman O.
Now Elian can toil for $3/day in the sun-drenched Cuban sugar cane fields, earn high reading scores and “free” health care, unburdened by American recession and the cruelty of free-market capitalism.
Great, another Clintonista scumbag back in play — what is it with the Obamanation, it’s as though he only wants the most compromised people around him so that he has blackmail material on all of them??? He wants people who don’t dare cross him ever, on anything, ‘cause he can ruin them in an instant?
Surely out of all the Democrap “professionals” out there he could get people without such sordid backgrounds, but he apparently wants the most disreputable Clintonistas around him.
Well the choice of Craig was obvious, since Hans Frank was unavailable for such an appointment.
...having had experience in helping to repatriate young children back to Cuba...
Retreads we can believe in.

Hey, don’t complain.
We get to keep the old score cards, just change the positions
Who's next? Ramsey Clark, America-loathing, International A.N.S.W.E.R. founder, anti-Israel/pro-Palestinian, Free Mumia proponent and all-around America hater? Fits the pattern, yes?
I wonder if the Obama Youth staffers will be running around the White House and Capitol building donning their orange ski caps and Che Guevara t-shirts.
This A-hole defended John Hinckley- successfully.
I wish the worst for this prick.
Or am I totally offbase here?
THAT is the guy Barack Obama picked. Which makes sense-- since Barack Obama hates America too.
Loyalty is fleeting towards the Clintoons
