Orwell's Children
American Thinker ^ | November 16, 2008 | Bruce Walker

Posted on 11/15/2008 11:31:11 PM PST by neverdem

It has been sixty years since George Orwell wrote his chilling dystopian classic, 1984, and it has been thirty years since we saw the creepiest example of educated and free people willingly walking into a living dystopia.  November 18, 1978, three decades ago, 918 people drank Kool-Aid laced with cyanide.  Jim Jones, the communist leader of Jonestown, Guyana, had become "Big Brother." Soviet and Communist Chinese propaganda films and condemnations of capitalist and imperialist America blared continually to the subjects of this island of Leftist Hell.

Jonestown ended in mass suicide, but the real horror was that ordinary people, Americans like you and I, had become so decoupled from reality and morality that they could be led to surrender everything, even their lives, intoxicated only with the venom of modern Leftism.  These were Orwell's Children.

We are drifting into the sort of horrific future he described.  Too many of us for comfort or solace have become just like the denizens of Jonestown:  Orwell's children -- a new generation of creature enraged into constant militancy against eternal enemies, oblivious to the notion of a Blessed Creator, melded into the consciousness of the party hive, divorced from history, hypnotized by images, inoculated against reason, stripped of family, and existing only to serve the cause.

Orwell did not write his book in a vacuum.  1984 describes the Soviet Union (the book describes Stalinist Russia so well so that subjects of that evil empire wondered when Orwell had lived there, though he had just described what he saw from the outside.)  1984 also describes Nazism and every other odious totalitarianism, which its secret police and propaganda machine and atomized subjects.  But Orwell was very much also writing about the democratic western nations.  His book was a warning of what could happen here.   Oceania, the only totalitarian superstate actually descried in 1984, was largely America and the British Empire.

There were specific elements necessary for nations with a heritage of freedom to slide into the most absolute and abject slavery.  These elements existed in Nazi Germany, they existed in Soviet Russia, and they exist in our free democracies today.  What are the characteristics of the Orwellian state?

Start with God.  He must go.  The great Russian novelists knew this:   "Without God, everything is permitted."  In Oceania, God simply does not exist.  The Nazis bragged that they would raise a generation  "...without ever having heard of the Sermon on the Mount or the Golden Rule, to say nothing of the Ten Commandments."  The Soviet persecuted anyone who followed the God of Jews and Christians.  God is hounded in our world today.  A generation of Orwell's Children are growing up without thinking about God at all or thinking that God is a silly idea cherished by sillier old fogies.

Truth must go too.  Nazis embraced the "Big Lie."  Soviets denied that honesty, per se, mattered.  In Orwell's Oceania, the Inner Party members learn to even lie to themselves and to hold utterly contradictory beliefs at the same time.  Truth and honesty have little meaning to Orwell's Children in our world.  All truth is relative, all honesty a sham.

Language must be brought to heel.  The Nazis did this by inventing meaningless words like "Aryan science."  Marxism foisted upon us words like "capitalism," which means nothing at all but which has so infected our minds that we reflexively use this silly nonsense word instead of freedom. Politically correct language is rampant.  We come to view words like "discriminate" as inherently evil, and other words like "viable fetal mass" have replaced the reality of murdered babies.

Image and symbols replace words.  Hitler, whose disciples seldom recalled what Hitler said, always recalled the raw imagery of their leader.  Stalin's portrait was as inescapable in the Soviet Union as the portrait of Big Brother in Oceania.  We live in a word of symbols and images.  Conservatives succeed in books and talk radio, media that deal in words.  Orwell's Children live in the realm of symbols and images.

The books of the Nazis and Soviets were unreadable tomes like Mein Kampf, The Myth of the Twentieth Century (the two Nazi "masterpieces") or vast empty volumes of Marxist-Leninism.   Is it an accident that the giant who most resisted this evil, Solzhenitsyn, was a devout Christian who mastered the written word better than any stooge of Hitler or the Politburo ever could?

Immutable oppressors are the final nasty element in dystopia.  Hitler blamed Jews for everything.  Stalin blamed kulaks and his enemies in the party for everything.   Subjects of Orwell's Oceania saw Emmanuel Goldstein as the eternal, immutable enemy of the party. Today there is a drearily predictable list of oppressors.   Christians, men, white people, the "rich" (whatever that is supposed to mean), America, and Israel are oppressors and nothing can ever change that.

Orwell even told us, by name, the professionals who would lead us into the nightmare of 1984:  "sociologists," "teachers," "bureaucrats," "journalists," "professional politicians," "scientists," "trade union organizers," "publicity experts," and "technicians."  (The term "community organizer" was unknown to him.)  Those who enslave were those who taught students, who created the news, who sat in the halls of government power, and who defined official "truth" (at least truth de jour.)

Orwell's Children live among us now, not in tiny numbers in weird Marxist cults like Jim Jones' People Temple, but as leaders of Congress, as the establishment of academia, as the producers of news and entertainment, as the administrators of public schools, as the "experts" in a thousand myriad and odd fields of putative "expertise."   They infatuate our bored children with the only reality and the only diversion that many can find.  They wait for the rest of us to grow older and to die.

Will these children inherit the earth?  History, not theology, has shown a single defense against the spreading contagion of Orwell's Children.  Solzhenitsyn found God in the godless Gulag.  Michael Power in early 1939 wrote:  "In the Christianity of the German people, the National Socialist has found the one enemy it could not vanquish" - and Christians in Germany, alone, chose to voluntarily seek death before selling their souls to Nazism.

The Jewish refusniks proved indigestible to the brutal Soviet police state.  When all else failed the Jewish people under the Nazis, devout Jews like my wife's mother clung to the Blessed Creator and survived the Holocaust.  God can touch us all.  God can protect us all from evil (not from harm - we all suffer and we all die - but from the much greater danger of the sort of evil Orwell described.)

Education, science, technological gadgetry, good medical care - all of this can not stop us from sliding into a massive Jonestown, a realized Oceania, a place marked by Dante's grim caution "Abandon hope, all you who enter here."  We are all anchored in belief, but it is what we believe that matters.  We can believe in the lies of Big Brother, which change each day with the needs of the party or we can believe in the truth of a living God.  We can become the children of Orwell or the special creatures of God.  Everything -- our nation, our world, our families, our communities -- flow from that choice.

Bruce Walker is the author of two books:  Sinisterism: Secular Religion of the Lie, and his recently published book, The Swastika against the Cross: The Nazi War on Christianity.

The press never mentions the fact that the Jonestown cult were committed communists, not christians. Here is a video of them singing the Soviet national anthem.

Jim Jones called himself “socialist” in the last will and testament tape made as the Kool Aid was passed.

He followed Marx and Lenin and had nothing to with religion in general or Christianity in particular. Her makes it clear on that tape.

He hijacked a Christian church to build a Communist commune.

Great article but one thing about Jim Jones’ weird blend of Pentecostalism and Marxism... I saw that documentary on Jonestown tonight and was astounded to hear Jones say “I am God.”

This statement reverberates in Jew and Christian alike as it was the first lie told to deceive in the Garden *Ye shall be as gods”

and it will be the last lie told in the book of revelation when the “man of sin” succeeds in fooling most of the world that “he is God”

And he will be blend the worst of Marxism, Stalinism and Nazism because he will be a religious dictator. Yeah, the antichrist.

Welcome to the United States of Obama. On the day after January 19,2009, we will all set our clocks back 25 years ... to January 20, 1984. Obama will not just be a stranger who looks out for us, he will be our Big Brother, and he will be watching.

Very interesting. I’ve never heard of this. The press has always portrayed Jonestown as an example of a “religious” cult.

Chilling.

I remember seeing a documentary years ago about Russia and people who were around in Stalin's time were being interviewed.

I don't remember much about it but one statement stood out from someone close to Stalin. It was about Stalin and his brutality being the natural and inescapable end of communism. He (Stalin)was the perfect expression of communism taken to the nth degree,as if communism had been dreamt up with him in mind.

The current state of the world in general (and the systems it employs) looks like having a very similar thing happening to it.I suppose eventually there will be one who is the ultimate expression of the worldly system.

Then we'll see just exactly who's god is God.

I was living in San Francisco at the time, and Jim Jones had been known as a radical leftist for years. He was the darling of the left in SF, because he had started off as a Pentecostal-type preacher in a black area and had developed a large congregation, mostly of poor, uneducated blacks, but then began to direct his activities to “social justice” causes. Mostly, that consisted of getting government monies for his various endeavors. He was always being honored by left-wing people and organizations in SF.

He picked up whites of the “seeker” type, similar to those who died a few years later in that mass suicide in LA with quarters in their pockets so that they could make phone calls from space when the aliens carried them off. SF at that time was full of them - older women who were divorced and lonely, young mothers without husbands, etc. He seems to have slept with as many of his female followers as he could, and I recall that people commented on this even while he and his cult were still in SF. But that was pretty common for your average guru and was one of the perks, I guess. He built a truly scary cult of personality.

Jim Jones used to publish a newspaper or newsletter that was given out on the streets and contained his ravings, which were exceedingly left wing and more or less in the Reverend Wright mold when they mentioned God at all. But he was wildly popular with all the “progressivists” in the area because he shared all their objectives and could be counted upon to turn out, with his horde of mindless followers, for their causes.

Faith in God is the biggest and in fact only threat to total state control. It gives the human being a separate moral identity and a separate allegiance, and this is why the state - when it’s on a rampage, as it is in Communism or Nazism - does everything possible to destroy religious faith. Faith makes one free.

Interestingly, in my mind, one of the biggest threats of Islam is that it is the only truly theocratic system that has ever existed on a large scale, that is, where government is (ideally) carried out by the clergy and where religious law and state law are identical. In other words, it achieves what everybody from the French revolutionaries to Hitler tried, and essentially neutralizes even faith by making the state into the voice of God. Islam’s gradual merging with Communism and extreme left-wing movements is no accident, because Islam is very collectivist and authoritarian by nature, and at the same time gives these totalitarian systems the final thing they need to exert ultimate control, that is, God (or at any rate, a deceptive claim that they represent God). Essentially, of course, they are all Luciferian.

Jim Jones started right here in Indiana - Indianapolis to be exact.

We've produced some doozies!

Charles Manson: We taught him well!
A string of burglaries of other stores, from one of which he stole a bicycle, ended when he was caught in the act and sent to an Indianapolis juvenile center.
Manson was sent, at age 13, to the Indiana School for Boys, where, he would later claim, he was brutalized sexually and otherwise.

John Dillinger: Never met a bank he didn't like!

50% accurate.

Islam is authoritarian. It is not collectivist, as Mohammed explicitly approves the institutions of private property, profit, etc.

In a truly authoritarian state, of course, the individual has no rights as against the state, so private property has no meaning once you incur the wrath of the ruler. Only those who fly below the radar are safe. A major reason why in traditional Muslim societies one hides rather than displays one's wealth.

Eerily familiar...

Party ownership of the print media
made it easy to manipulate public opinion,
and the film and radio carried the process further.

16. Ministry Of Truth

.......

The Ministry of Truth, Winston's place of work, contained, it was said, three thousand rooms above ground level, and corresponding ramifications below.

The Ministsry of Truth concerned itself with Lies. Party ownership of the print media made it easy to manipulate public opinion, and the film and radio carried the process further.

The primary job of the Ministry of Truth was to supply the citizens of Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreen programmes, plays, novels - with every conceivable kind of information, instruction, or entertainment, from a statue to a slogan, from a lyric poem to a biological treatise, and from a child's spelling-book to a Newspeak dictionary.

Winston worked in the RECORDS DEPARTMENT (a single branch of the Ministry of Truth) editing and writing for The Times. He dictated into a machine called a speakwrite. Winston would receive articles or news-items which for one reason or another it was thought necessary to alter, or, in Newspeak, rectify. If, for example, the Ministry of Plenty forecast a surplus, and in reality the result was grossly less, Winston's job was to change previous versions so the old version would agree with the new one. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs - to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance.

When his day's work started, Winston pulled the speakwrite towards him, blew the dust from its mouthpiece, and put on his spectacles. He dialed 'back numbers' on the telescreen and called for the appropriate issues of The Times, which slid out of the pneumatic tube after only a few minutes' delay. The messages he had received referred to articles or news-items which for one reason or another it was thought necessary to rectify.

In the walls of the cubicle there were three orifices. To the right of the speakwrite, a small pneumatic tube for written messages; to the left, a larger one for newspapers; and on the side wall, within easy reach of Winston's arm, a large oblong slit protected by a wire grating. This last was for the disposal of waste paper. Similar slits existed in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the building, not only in every room but at short intervals in every corridor. For some reason they were nicknamed memory holes. When one knew that any document was due for destruction, or even when one saw a scrap of waste paper lying about, it was an automatic action to lift the flap of the nearest memory hole and drop it in, whereupon it would be whirled away on a current of warm air to the enormous furnaces which were hidden somewhere in the recesses of the building.

As soon as Winston had dealt with each of the messages, he clipped his speakwritten corrections to the appropriate copy of The Times and pushed them into the pneumatic tube. Then, with a movement which was as nearly as possible unconsicious, he crumpled up the original message and any notes that he himself had made, and dropped them into the memory hole to be devoured by the flames.

What happened in the unseen labyrinth to which the tubes led, he did not know in detail, but he did know in general terms. As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead.

In the cubicle next to him the little woman with sandy hair toiled day in day out, simply at tracking down and deleting from the Press the names of people who had been vaporized and were therefore considered never to have existed. And this hall, with its fifty workers or thereabouts, was only one-sub-section, a single cell, as it were, in the huge complexity of the Records Department. Beyond, above, below, were other swarms of workers engaged in an unimaginable multitude of jobs.

There were huge printing-shops and their sub editors, their typography experts, and their elaborately equipped studios for the faking of photographs. There was the tele-programmes section with its engineers, its producers and its teams of actors specially chosen for their skill in imitating voices; clerks whose job was simply to draw up lists of books and periodicals which were due for recall; vast repositories where the corrected documents were stored; and the hidden furnaces where the original copies were destroyed.

And somewhere or other, quite anonymous, there were the directing brains who co-ordinated the whole effort and laid down the lines of policy which made it necessary that this fragment of the past should be preserved, that one falsified, and the other rubbed out of existence.

Not too long before the Jones Town thing occurred, Jim Jones was travelling through the south, putting ads in local papers advertising “evangelistic church meetings” where he would give a little talk, like Obama, saying nothing, pass the collection plate and sell tapes. My MIL, who was into the whole charismatic thing back then, and I went to one of his meetings in Franklin, TN at one of the mainline churches there. My main impression of him was one of a paranoid person. I just remember him going on about his having been involved in a wreck where the devil had tried to kill him. He didn’t talk communism, nor religion either. Just a lot of mumbo jumbo the best I can remember. I think he was just doing the “evangelistic meetings” to finance their expenses. In retrospect, his meetings must have been routinely scheduled during the week when women would come to them. Ha. Evidently my MIL and I didn’t fit the leftist profile.

Certainly some notable Christians in Germany, but not all...

On April 20, 1939, Archbishop Orsenigo celebrated Hitler's
birthday. The celebrations, initiated by Pacelli (Pope Pius XII)
became a tradition. Each April 20, Cardinal Bertram of Berlin
was to send "warmest congratulations to the Fuhrer in the name of
the bishops and the dioceses in Germany" and added with
"fervent prayers which the Catholics of Germany are
sending to heaven on their altars."

"[Adolf Hitler is] the tool of God, called upon to overcome Judaism..." - Father Wilhelm Senn, a Catholic priest, writing in a Catholic publication, May 15, 1934

And in 1941, Hitler himself proclaimed to General Gerhard Engel: "I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so."

The main thing that the Christian community in Germany rose up against in earnest in the Nazi program was the forced sterilization and euthanasia of the "unfit," and they were able to beat it back.

1984’s “IngSoc” was itself a Doublethink misnomer, just like “Ministry of Love” (which was about torture). In fact, IngSoc was intended to be an amalgam of English and American societies at the time.

The characteristics of Oceania are:

1. Anyone who doesn’t agree with the Party, EVEN WHEN THEY ARE CORRECT, is an enemy of the state. Hence, even top officials in the regime can be denounced as traitors. There is no middle ground, no room for compromise.

2. The War: One minute the enemy is Eurasia, then it’s Eastasia. The name of the enemy can even switch mid-sentence. The reason for this is that the three superpowers are fighting each other at all - the whole thing is a propaganda invention to unite the people within each superpower, boost support for the military, and the stories of great victories in far-off countries are used to boost morale and economic activity.

3. The revisionist culture of DoubleThink is used to convince people that whatever the regime says, is based on recordable fact even when it’s not.

4. The vitriol directed against Goldstein the man, flies in the face of the fact he’s the only political figurehead who’s actually talking sense. But he’s talking about stopping the war, rebuilding the country, and cutting the crap, which obviously the regime itself doesn’t want to hear.

5. The Anti-Sex Brigade is a sop to personal morality instigated by the regime to get people to focus on its wants not theirs; however it is a quasi-religious movement as it placates the most spiritually-minded proles.

6. The surveillance society. One thing that suppresses dissent is the feeling that “Big Brother is watching you”.

Any of these dubious qualities can be attached to ANY government, socialist or fascist, republican or democrat, religious or secular.

The book is an indictment of any political elite that gets so drunk on power that it begins to serve itself instead of the people, becomes intolerant of criticism or rejection from the people, and relies on fear and paranoia to keep the people on its side.

From the COMMUNIST MANIFESTO:

Abolition of the family! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Communists.

On what foundation is the present family, the bourgeois family, based? On capital, on private gain. In its completely developed form, this family exists only among the bourgeoisie. But this state of things finds its complement in the practical absence of the family among proletarians, and in public prostitution.

The bourgeois family will vanish as a matter of course when its complement vanishes, and both will vanish with the vanishing of capital.

Do you charge us with wanting to stop the exploitation of children by their parents? To this crime we plead guilty.

But, you say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace home education by social.

And your education! Is not that also social, and determined by the social conditions under which you educate, by the intervention direct or indirect, of society, by means of schools, etc.? The Communists have not intended the intervention of society in education; they do but seek to alter the character of that intervention, and to rescue education from the influence of the ruling class.

The bourgeois claptrap about the family and education, about the hallowed correlation of parents and child, becomes all the more disgusting, the more, by the action of Modern Industry, all the family ties among the proletarians are torn asunder, and their children transformed into simple articles of commerce and instruments of labor.

But you Communists would introduce community of women, screams the bourgeoisie in chorus.

The bourgeois sees his wife a mere instrument of production. He hears that the instruments of production are to be exploited in common, and, naturally, can come to no other conclusion that the lot of being common to all will likewise fall to the women.

He has not even a suspicion that the real point aimed at is to do away with the status of women as mere instruments of production.

For the rest, nothing is more ridiculous than the virtuous indignation of our bourgeois at the community of women which, they pretend, is to be openly and officially established by the Communists. The Communists have no need to introduce free love; it has existed almost from time immemorial.

Our bourgeois, not content with having wives and daughters of their proletarians at their disposal, not to speak of common prostitutes, take the greatest pleasure in seducing each other's wives. (Ah, those were the days!)

Bourgeois marriage is, in reality, a system of wives in common and thus, at the most, what the Communists might possibly be reproached with is that they desire to introduce, in substitution for a hypocritically concealed, an openly legalized system of free love. For the rest, it is self-evident that the abolition of the present system of production must bring with it the abolition of free love springing from that system, i.e., of prostitution both public and private.

.

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels Manifesto of the Communist Party 1848

Now tell me that today's liberals are not Communists.

I’ve been saying the same for years. Not so succinctly or expertly but the same. It bugs me that he has to call them Orwell’s children. Although it works to get the point across. They are Orwell’s murderers more like as they are erasing all knowledge of him or what he warned us of.

Just an aside: It is necessary to read C.S. Lewis’s “The Abolition of Man” to get just WHY man behaves in this manner. It IS puzzeling. Lewis does an excellent job of explaining it. Also the mechanics of just how it will come to pass and the inevitable conclusion of human kind on ‘this’ earth.

“Jim Jones was mostly interested in enhancing his chances of bedding women. “

Agreed — I’ve also read that Marx and Lennin we also very focused on “bedding”. Look at the sleezay 60’s dudes who were hanging around in the rallies, sit-ins, etc. — they were all primarily concerned w/ getting laid. It would seem that left wing ideology is little more than a paternalistic plot for sleezy guys to “bed down” with gullable females.

We should run with this and make these tools defend their ideology!

It causes us to ask the question, "What is the difference between early 1800's community/town/village education, and socialized education of liberal/communist ideology?"

The Founders believed in promoting education, BUT there's a huge difference between promoting public education and socialized education.

Is it any wonder that a Commie like Bill Ayers would go into "education of children" after becoming a retired unrepentant Commie terrorist?

The indoctrination of our children and the breakup of the traditional family are necessary to lay the foundation for a communist Utopia.

I bet if we all read the Communist Manifesto we would all come to the conclusion that Obama is a communist in the tradition of Marx and Engels. I would add to that list Pelosi and Reid.

God can protect us all from evil (not from harm - we all suffer and we all die - but from the much greater danger of the sort of evil Orwell described.)

Very profound.

It's better to lose your life, than to gain the world and lose your soul.
