"We were preparing to leave when the sirens sounded again," he said. "Two American F-4 Phantoms flew in. We had two missiles out of six left. The Vietnamese fired first. Their rocket missed, it fell into the jungle. One plane went round the hill, the other came over the bridge. We fired at this one."

Correct his weapon was an A-4 not sure I would assume a translation error if the story is true.
To: neodad
That is correct. McCain flew a Douglas A4 Skyhawk. I have doubts that an air defense officer would confuse an F4 and an A4.

There has never been any official acknowledgment that Soviet soldiers served in Vietnam on the side of the communist North Vietnamese in the 1960s and 1970s. However, Trushyekin, currently in a hospital in Russia's second city of St. Petersburg, had no qualms about speaking about his time in the jungles of Southeast Asia."I got to Vietnam at the time when there were mixed units with Vietnamese," he said, adding that he had served as an officer in a missile unit.
My father said that we regularly overheard Russian technicians in Vietnam manning their missile sites.

Plus, I thought McCain was in a flight of 6 or 7 aircraft.

The story claims F-4s were shot down. McCain’s plane was an A-4, a much smaller aircraft and no way mistaken for and F-4.

Mccain meeting with Obama today in Chicago.
This is pre press release spin to blunt McCain's statements about the meeting. We must revile the press continually.
What a bunch of unAmerican morons.
No officer would mistake the F15 and A-4. And its not the kind of mistake that would occur in translation.
This is a propagandists mistake. Fiction is often harder to write than fact. In a lie you have to create the world out of whole cloth. Few leftists news rags are up to it.

Da! Lt. Kerry had navigated his boat to Hanoi, with passengers: the great film actress Jane Fonda, eminent American politician Ramsey Clark and prize-winning journalist Peter Arnett.
It is seared into my memory as if it happened yesterday! I fired the SAM missiles from my shoulder—one after another—and my Amerikan comrades all clapped and cheered as the planes fell from the sky....
Finally in a magnificent display of proletarian solidarity, Lt. Kerry admitted to being a pawn and lackey of imperialist warlords and swallowed his medals. We then posed for photos and had tea and cakes.

>As an aside, the Israelis flew the Skyhawk, too.<
And Argentina during the Falklands War. From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-4_Skyhawk
“Argentine Air Force Skyhawks sank HMS Coventry (D118) and HMS Antelope (F170) as well as producing heavy damage to several others: RFA Sir Galahad (1966) (which was subsequently scuttled as a war grave), HMS Glasgow (D88), HMS Argonaut (F56), HMS Broadsword (F88) and RFA Sir Tristram. Argentine Navy A-4Qs, flying from Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego naval airbase, also played a role in the bombing attacks against British ships, destroying HMS Ardent (F184).[18]”
And, from what I recall from reading about the Falklands War, had the Argentines known how to properly arm the bombs, the carnage would have been a lot worse...
