From sea to shining sea, the election of Barack Obama has sparked a run on guns by firearm fans who fear stiffer rules are on the way.
During election week, the FBI did 374,510 background checks on prospective gun owners, compared with 251,804 in the same week last year. Last month, the G-men did checks on 285,894 people buying handguns, compared with 223,141 in Oct. 2007. "It is a significant jump," Special Agent Jason Pack said.
Obama has vowed to protect gun ownership rights, but as an Illinois state lawmaker, he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms.
Bucking the national trend, local New York gun shops report no major rise in business, and cops have seen no big increase in gun permit applications.
"New Yorkers that have guns often get them from other states, Pennsylvania and Florida in particular," theorized Evan Thies, a gun control advocate and City Council candidate. "New York City has the toughest gun control laws in the nation."
Still, even city gun dealers worry that an Obama presidency will usher in even tougher laws.
"We don't deal in handguns, and personally, I don't know why anybody would want a machine gun," said Guy Davies, executive director of Holland & Holland Sporting Weapons on E. 57th St., where the cheapest gun is a handmade, $60,000 hunting rifle.
"From our point of view, these laws are a step in the wrong direction," said Davies.
Elsewhere in the country, there is evidence the heat-packing public is stocking up.
Gun peddlers in Georgia have staged "Obama Sales." Up in Sarah Palin country, the demand is so big that Alaska gun dealers are running out of ammunition. Even in Obama's home state of Illinois, business has been brisk at rural gun shops.
In Pennsylvania, they aren't just clinging to their guns, as Obama said during the campaign, they're stockpiling them.
"We've easily doubled our normal sales of guns," said Jere Dunkelberger, who owns Dunkelberger's Sports Outfitter in Stroudsburg, Pa. "The biggest sellers are security-style shotguns and handguns. Mostly a combination of self-protection and home protection firearms."
"The increase in firearms sales was predictable," said Lawrence Keane of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "It's clear from President-elect Obama's voting record, and the promises he continues to make, that gun control will be coming back to the White House."
If I want to watch a new movie, should I have to go to the store to get it? What if I want to watch it late at night?
If I want to go shooting, why should I have to go buy ammo then? Why shouldn't I be able to have whatever I consider a reasonable store at home? Even if my version of “reasonable” is a million rounds?
You do understand that we have a Second Amendment right to bear arms for self-defense, not for hunting, or target shooting, right? If not, you better go read the Constitution again, and read Justice Story's book about it. Try reading Thomas Jefferson, as well.
For that matter, read all the founding fathers. Several of them thought we did not need an enumerated Bill of Rights, as no one could possibly mistake their reasoning. Others, Jefferson among them, thought those guys were wrong, and said so. LOUDLY! Guess who was right? Even at that, we have been being infringed since I was old enough to notice, and then some.

Government armories can fill that shortage. Also a good place to shop for heavy ordnance.
I know the laws in Florida are much better than NYC. I just wondered why the guy in the article said people are getting their firearms in PA and FL.
You forgot about the target shooters, who through more ammo in a day than a typical "hunter" would go through in several years (I've personally gone through about 600 rounds of rifle ammo in the last week, and it isn't unusual to shoot 1000 rounds of handgun ammo in a single day with friends).
Reloaders can also build up custom loads (careful selection of bullets, powder, powder charge, etc) to maximize the performance of their specific firearm, achieving levels of accuracy for their shooting conditions that can't be achieved from "off-the-shelf" factory loads.
They are only talking about October, not even into the election which kicked off an even larger spending spree.
Just buy what suits you now and be done with it.

Look, the problem is the government telling me and millions of others what we can and cannot buy with the few hard-earned dollars that they let us keep. When you are talking about outlawing something that has never been outlawed, or vastly increasing its cost via punitive taxes - so that it is effectively outlawed, then you're entering the area of tyranny.
I shoot anywhere from 1,000-5,000 rounds of various calibers of ammo per year, depending on how much time and money I've got. This is for fun and for practice (so that I can responsibly carry a loaded handgun for self-defense). There's simply no way for me to go and buy 40,000-200,000 rounds of ammo now, let alone enough to have for teaching my kids, letting them have some fun, actually defending myself or my family, taking new shooters or guests shooting, etc., etc. if ammo is either banned or effectively banned.
Make no mistake - Mr. Obama aims to eliminate the gun culture in this country. It can't be done overnight, but if you effectively eliminate ammunition from the store shelves then all that we mere citizens have left is some very expensive clubs.
Some have said that government employees may even someday do citizens the favor of personally delivering their guns and ammo to them.

The Second Amendment isn’t about our right to possess “recreational firearms.”
It’s a violation of Federal law for an individual in any state to knowingly sell a gun directly to someone from out of state.

I really think Zero! is going to be a plague on this poor, deluded country- the 1st and 2nd Amendments are blatantly meaningless to him, and the crew he’s assembling. Indeed they ( and the rest of the BOR and Constitution ) are viewed as impediments.

In fact, among key advisors chosen by Obama to vet possible running mates is Eric HOLDER, who was Attorney General Janet Reno’s top deputy. Holder, as the Justice Department point man on all gun-control schemes, was among the top officials announcing the Clinton-Gore extortion agreement in 2000.
The “change” Obama and his close allies—like George Soros’ Moveon.org—seek is a complete regime change driven by a radical political agenda.
Among the many requirements of that agreement, a crucial one gave key elements of the gun-ban movement total oversight of the firearm industry and an ability to destroy it by running it out of business. None of this would ever have passed Congress as law, yet this stranglehold was achieved through the bureaucratic back door by Bill Clinton’s executive branch.
Backdoor bureaucratic gun-control schemes in the waning days of the Clinton administration also included diversion of millions of taxpayer dollars to HUD “gun buybacks” and gun destruction schemes; and development of so-called “smart gun” technologies and “ballistic fingerprinting.”
The ultimate aim of “smart gun” technology—to prevent a firearm being used by anyone but its registered owner—was spelled out in model legislation first floated in Pennsylvania, which said all handguns that did not possess “smart technology” would become contraband to be collected by police agencies.
All of this was created and pushed through the efforts of bureaucratic lawyers like Obama advisor HOLDER. Now the ultimate Washington insider lawyer, Holder is being touted as an Obama Supreme Court appointee. Recent headlines can put HOLDER’s reappearance on the political scene into sharp context. The Journal of the American Bar Association even asks: “Will Eric HOLDER Become the Next Attorney General?”

Maybe so, maybe no, but the DOD sure has worked side by side with the Civilian Marksmanship Program to put surplus battle rifles in the hands of qualified (one might even say "regulated") civilians, who then organize and help other civilians qualify to purchase said firearms. This, despite knowing that there are political elements in this country who want that cooperation to stop.

Also might be a good idea to place an ad in the paper to sell any recently bought (and therefore recorded) firearm.
You could put in a one-off phone number or something, or just tell the hundreds of folks that call that it’s already sold.
Keep the ad as “proof” that you sold the firearm.
