Gun sales booming: Local rush to accumulate arms triggered by potential for limits
The Marietta Times / The Associated Press ^ | November 18, 2008 | Brad Bauer

Until recently Justin Antill only owned a few guns that had been passed down to him from family members.

Fueled by fears that gun rights could be reduced when President-elect Barack Obama takes office, Antill and millions of other Americans are stocking up on firearms, ammunition and accessories.

Antill, 23, has purchased two guns within the past few weeks. He anticipates buying more.

"I hadn't planned on spending that kind of money, but I'm concerned I may not be able to buy what I want down the road," Antill said. "I think they're really going to crack down on guns and (high-capacity magazine) clips and make them harder to own."

Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were 108,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. Background checks for gun purchases are up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, the most recent data available, according to the FBI.

Obama has said he respects Americans' Second Amendment right to bear arms, but that he favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault and concealed weapons.

As a U.S. senator, Obama voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to lawsuits; and as an Illinois state legislator, he supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms. While in the Senate, Vice President-elect Joe Biden has supported proposed bans against semi-automatic firearms, magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and additional waiting periods before guns can be purchased.

Despite the candidates' voting records, local residents Bill Hutchinson and Troy Farrell say they don't expect sweeping changes in gun laws. Both are gun owners and Obama supporters.

“Why do we accept limits...?” As a matter of fact, we don’t. But unfortunately, our RINO, limp-wristed or leftist government/elected officials do accept them on a daily basis. That is, when they are not simply imposing them. Imagine half a million NJ residents, well armed, traveling to the capitol and “inviting” the governor and state legislators to rewrite the gun laws on the spot. Anyone refusing would of course be removed from public office. (No, not in the Godfather sense!) And while they are at it, future voting will be done by fingerprint recognition only. Another very good new bit of legislation. Might as well get a few important things done. That is what it will eventually take to retrieve our lost rights and liberties while protecting the rest. Imagine the howl from the MSM! How delicious it would be. But I would bet that 70% or more of the American peole would support the actions of these new found patriots.

That’s the way I took it. Should be a question on an intelligence test or something.

“Do you support Obama and believe that he will protect the Second Amendment?”

Yes: (You are a moron and danger to your country. Take the firearm you profess to possess and take yourself out immediately.)

No: (You are a patriot and as such a danger to the president elect and the anti-Constitutionalist democratics. Prepare to defend the Constitution and the U.S.)

"I don't believe there will ever be a law to do away with guns," said Hutchinson, 49, of Marietta. "You may see some laws that require registration for some guns, but I don't personally own or use that type of gun."

Same attitude they had in England. I'm a hunter, I don't use handguns. What do I care if they ban handguns...

Buying up guns is important, don’t get me wrong. However, I’ll be interested to know what the membership roles of the NRA look like by January 20th. It’s very important for them to say we have X million of people in our organization who all vote and will get pissed if you pass laws to ban guns. People will spend thousands of dollars on new guns and ammo before January 20th. Please spend $35 on a yearly NRA membership. It might go a lot farther in protecting our 2nd amendment rights.

Be prepared for an 8 to 10 week wait.

My FOID renewal took 7 weeks. New apps are taking even longer.

The Civilian Defense Force will be the enforcement arm of redistribution. It will be used to confiscate what the “hoarders” are not “sharing”.

Obama supporters, yes, but individuals who realize, at some basic level, that there is a coming confrontation, between those who shall defend what they have, and those who will come rampaging through just taking from those who are defenseless.

I had a nice conversation with a guy that left LA right after the Rodney King riots. He said it really hit home when he went to the supermarket and there was NOTHING to buy. Moved his family to this sleepy little Oregon backwater. His sister lives in Portland. She said that there have been home invasion robberies in upscale neighborhoods. The target: food.

Recently, or during the LA riots?

Recently. I’ve never talked to the guy as extensively as I did yesterday. He’s preparing for a very bad scenario. Better safe than sorry.

It's an oxymoron.

Actually it's a contradiction. An oxymoron is a term, usually consisting of two nouns that are the exact opposite of one to describe something.

Examples: old news, jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, thorough briefing, academic freedom, liberal tolerance.

These two guys' positions as gun owning 0bama supporters definitely identifies them as morons but there's nothing "oxy" about them.

Might just have to make this my new tag line...

Yeah, I thought about it later and realized I misused the term.

"Both are gun owners and Obama supporters." Someone please tell me what's wrong with that sentence...

They want him to pay for their ammo.

If there are all these gun purchases, what does the supply look like? If we invest in gun manufacturer stocks, what kind of increase might they see when the next quarterly earnings are announced?

When the Republicans in Congress see any Gun Control bill coming down the pike, they should submit their own first draft saying Registered Democrats should be the forbidden to own a gun.

Register Democrats, not Guns... The new battle cry.

I haven’t gone on a gun-buying spree, but I do think I’ll be getting some accessories for my shotgun so it can handle different loads.

Can a shotgun with an Accu-Choke tube already fire slugs or does it need modifications?
