Waxman dethrones Dingell as chairman By: Patrick O'Connor November 20, 2008 10:58 AM EST

California Rep. Henry A. Waxman on Thursday officially dethroned longtime Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell, upending a seniority system that has governed Democratic politics in the House for decades.

In a secret ballot vote in the Cannon Caucus Room, House Democrats ratified an earlier decision by the Steering and Policy Committee to replace the 82-year-old Dingell with his 69-year-old rival. The vote was 137-122 in favor of Waxman.

The ascension of Waxman, a wily environmentalist, recasts a committee that Dingell has chaired since 1981 with an eye toward protecting the domestic auto industry in his native Michigan. The Energy and Commerce Committee has principal jurisdiction over many of President-elect Barack Obama's top legislative priorities, including energy, the environment and health care.

This is not good news. Dingell, from MI, is at the very least empathetic to the auto industry and cheap oil. Waxman, from CA, on the other hand, is a greenie of the worst kind. Global warming theorists will be dictating energy policy for the foreseeable future.

So they get to vote in secret, but "union leaders are confident that Congress is about to enact" a law that eliminates secret ballots in union elections?

It's amazing how Dingell managed to chair a committee while his party was in the minority for 12 of those 27 years since 1981.

The secret ballot is an American tradition and political right. To deny it is alien to our culture. There should be resistance to this plan. What can we do?

Henry A. Waxman represents California's 30th Congressional District, which includes the complete cities of Agoura Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Westlake Village. He also represents communities including Pacific Palisades, West Hills, Canoga Park, Bel-Air, Century City, Westwood, Brentwood, Topanga, Chatsworth, Woodland Hills, Beverlywood and West Los Angeles.

I'm sure that Waxman will bring a unique perspective to his new post; one that reflects the good ol' down home values of the majority of his district. /sarc

This is also very bad news for gun owners. Waxman is fanatically anti-gun, and will doubtless pressure the EPA to come up with some regulations restricting the use of lead bullets, or of taxing them in some fashion.

It’s very, very bad news. Dingell may be a crook, but he’s a crook who favors the labor unions and therefore industry. Waxman is also a crook, but he favors the environmentalist lobby. I.e., he wants to make industry and power generation more expensive and shut it down.

This is VERY bad for our economic future. It means a majority of senior Democrat senators favor the global warming scam, to the point of violating their own seniority principles.

LOL! Of course, we should not wish any physical harm for the majority of an electorate simply because they can't muster the intelligence to see through Lefty charlatans, like Henry. However, in this particular instance, I will state that I am damn careful with my purchases of products/services provided by Leftist controlled political districts etc..

Hate to say it, but the severe recession coming up has one good upside. With the economy teetering, someone like Waxman cannot implement his leftist/socialist/green dream. Even these clowns know that it would make the economy worse and they would be thrown out. They can’t have gas at $5.00 a gallon.
