Obama may tap Elián players for White House roles
Miami Herald ^ | Nov 19, 2008 | BETH REINHARD

Posted on 11/20/2008 8:29:43 AM PST by upchuck

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to name two attorneys to his administration who helped return Elián González to Cuba, angering some Miami Republicans.

Two veterans of the Elián González saga are expected to be named to top posts in Democrat Barack Obama's administration, infuriating some Cuban-American Republicans who haven't forgotten the 6-year-old boy seized in Miami and sent back to the communist regime.

The Associated Press is reporting that Obama's top choice for U.S. attorney general is Eric Holder, who served as deputy attorney general during the 2000 raid in Miami. Greg Craig, who represented González's father in the custody battle, is expected to be named White House counsel.

Both were advisors to Obama during his presidential campaign, prompting a small contingent of Cuban exiles to protest outside of his speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami in June.

President-elect Obama has not made the appointments official, but both the Republican National Committee and some Cuban-American leaders in Miami are already signaling their disapproval.

''This is a clear sign that the Obama administration is diametrically opposed to the concerns and views of the Cuban-American community,'' said state Rep. David Rivera of Miami, who helped organize the June protest. ``It is a blatant and disrespectful slap in the face.''

Greg Craig really represented Archer Daniels Midland Corporation in the Elian Gonzales case. His highly publicized freedom imperiled a Sugar and Vegetable Oil Plant they were building on Cuba.

Years ago, Mad Magazine had a cartoon of a well-dressed college student returning to his dorm room with a big trophy. His roommate asks for the return of his suit jacket, and it is handed over. Then the request is made for his trousers, and the guy with the trophy hands them over. Then the tie. Then the shirt.

Finally, the guy is in his underwear and he sheepishly hands over the trophy too -- and we see that it is engraved "Best Dressed Man on Campus".

I'm thinking that with the Clinton Administration virtually back in place, maybe Obama should just let Hillary move into the White House.

The kidnapping of Elian by Clinton’s goon squad took place
on the Saturday of Easter weekend, IIRC. I pray for him every year on that day.

“I have one words for Obama voters: Suckers!”

Do you really think the idiots that voted for Zero actually give a damn about Elian? While that was going on all the asshats I spoke with were saying “he belongs with his father”. Elian shouldn’t stay with his relatives in Florida...These are the same red diaper babies who voted for Zero.

I’ll post my prediction, which came to me like a nightmare, last night:

If Hillary turns down the Sec. of State position, it will go to (the envolope please) Carolyn Kennedy.

Maybe this is why Ted has carved out a spot for Hillary in the health care issue, and why there is talk of creating a new Senate position just for Hillary. To get her to refuse the ‘offer’. Then, Carolyn Kennedy will be named, and the birds in the sky will sing (just before the hawk hears them and picks his dinner) and the lion and lamb will lay down together.

Don’t know much about the individuals involved. If they are Clintonistas they are probably scoundrels. That said, IMO, Elian Gonzalez’s father had every right to take him back to Cuba.

Parental rights trump politics and political rights every time in my book.

Elian might have had a much better life in America, but that doesn’t matter. My kids might have a much better life if some billionaire kidnapped them to raise them as his own, but they are MY kids.

The Gonzalez case was a very simple custody case, IMO. Unless the Miami relatives could prove his father was unfit, it should have been a no-brainer. If Dad wants him, Dad gets him.

All the freedoms we enjoy in America and want for the Cuban people, are pretty much worthless if our government denies fit parents the basic right to raise their own kids.

Parental rights trump politics and political rights every time in my book.

Only insofar as those parental rights to not infringe human rights. Human rights, like life and freedom, trump parental rights 100% of the time. Elian's father had no right to either kill Elian, or drag him back into slavery with him to Cuba. Case closed.

Children in Cuba belong to the state.

There are no parental rights in Cuba.

Elain's father had to do what the communist dictator asked or he would have been severely punished.

Elian did not go back to be with his father, he went back to be a political pawn for Castro.

I gained a lot of respect for Cuban Americans during the Elián González saga. I doubt many of them voted for the Chosen One. They will survive this little slap in the face. Hopefully some day they can go back to a free Cuba and we can vacation there again.

As I recall, Elian’s father came to the U.S. to take him home. Couldn’t he sought asylum for himself and Elian is he so wished?

I can understand requiring the father to come get him, but if a fit, sole, parent wants to take his kid to Cuba, Zimbabwe, Iran, Somalia or wherever, that is his right.

I honestly never got the idea that Elian’s Dad would have wanted Elian to stay here, if not for intimidation from Castro, though I don’t doubt such intimidation would have taken place.

First of all, all he knew was Cuba, so in his mind it might have been the best place to raise him, considering all the anti-American propaganda he must have heard in his lifetime.

Besides that, most parents would rather be with their kids, than have them raised by others in a better place.

Would you be in favor of sending commando raids into Cuba, to “rescue” children, against the will of their parents, and bring them to America?

Yes, if he wanted his relatives being watched by Casto killed. That was his inattentive.

Would you be in favor of sending commando raids into Cuba, to “rescue” children, against the will of their parents, and bring them to America?

Elian had two parents.

His Mother who brought him to this country and Castro.

The will of his only free parent was that he stay in the USA.

It seems to be you that approves of "sending commando raids" to “rescue” children:

You seem to know very little about the situation.

Elian's FATHER was KEPT AWAY from anyone and everyone who would be capable of talking to him about asylunm.

They would not even let SENATOR SMITH ( REPUBLICAN)in the gates at Andrews AFB to see ELian's father or step-mother.

It is AMERICAN LAW that one here can seek asylum and GREG CRAIG and KLINTON and RENO and ERIC HOLDER and the entire DIRTBAG cabal MADE SURE NO ONE WAS ABLE TO MAKE THE OFFER!!!!

Even at Greg Craig'sa house party to show off ELIAN they made SURE the no one would make any OFFERS of asylum.

IT WAS A SICK SICK AFFAIR.....let's just FORGET that ELIAN's MOTHER lost her life trying to get her son to FREEDOM!

Yes, Elian's father was never allowed to be out of sight of his minders, so we never could hear what he really thought. Allowing the father to live here was never made an option.

There was a liberal nun (maybe president of a Catholic college in Florida) who was all for Elian going back until she met with his grandmothers and saw the fear in their eyes.
