Larger Indian warship to fight pirates off Aden
New Delhi (IANS): The Indian Navy will be sending guided-missile destroyer INS Mysore to the Gulf of Aden for patrolling the waterways hit by a spate of ship hijackings by Somali pirates, defence sources said Thursday.
The move comes after a successful hostile action against Somali pirates in the area by the Indian Navy.
A Delhi class destroyer, INS Mysore will replace INS Tabar in the Gulf of Aden, a Navy official told IANS on condition of anonymity. He said the destroyer will set sail from Mumbai soon.
The official said a proposal of the shipping ministry to send four more warships to strengthen operations against piracy in that region was still pending.
The Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Tabar Tuesday night engaged the pirates and sank a "mother vessel" that had two speedboats in tow. INS Tabar, which so far has escorted 35 merchant vessels passing through the region, had also staved off pirate attacks on two merchant ships last week.
The 6,900-ton Delhi class destroyers are the largest indigenously built warships till date and pack more fire power in them than frigates.
INS Mysore carries on board two Sea King helicopters, along with a Cheetah or a Chetak, and stock 16 Uran missiles, 100mm AK 100 Gun, four multi-barrel 30mm AK 630 gun.
With Marine Commandos, INS Mysore is said to be a potent force to patrol the Gulf of Aden to stop the pirates from attacking or hijacking merchant vessels.
Add to that, the bit about the helicopters on board, and the marine commando detachment.
I love a good pirate dunk.
Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling...
Arrrrrrgh!...;0)
After centuries of murder, abuse and persecution at the hands of Muslims, the Hindus are more than happy to pop a cap at a few of the nastier ones.

Heads up ping.
Why is a Chinese fishing vessel off the coast of Africa?

INS MYSORE.

INS MYSORE
They successfully landed a probe on the moon last week also !
They ought to make them walk the plank!
? I read the article, and reread it. I couldn’t find anything about a Chinese fishing vessel.
Perhaps more coffee is needed here.
YOUR SORE WHAT?
She appears to be perfectly capable of handling some rag-tag pirates.
As for how to handle said pirates, I believe the best way is sink their ships, and don’t bother picking up men in the water. While I’m not an expert on “law of the sea” I believe it is unlawful to destroy a life boat carrying survivors of a sinking. However, the crew can be fished out of the lifeboat, and killed if they resist same. Also, once aboard the rescuing vessel, under the old Royal Navy regs, they can be summarily tried as pirates and executed.
What we are seeing here is India assuming control of policing the Indian Ocean, and the USN essentially ceding same. Good or bad? The good is that we can’t be everywhere, all the time, so someone has to step up. The bad is that this is part of the oil shipping lanes, which I thought were so damn vital to our national security that we have warships permanently on station in the Persian Gulf. While we have good international relations with India at the present time, they are not an ally. They are more of a “co-belligerent” against radical Islam. Who knows what they will do in the future, and now they control a choke point in the international oil market.
Thank you, I find myself having to post that on far to many pirate threads.
Article says “replace.” Perhaps someone with knowledge of the capabilities of the various vessels can tell us whether this move is for show or for effect. My uneducated guess is that more stealth frigates of the Tabar class would be better than sending a guided missile destroyer to try and hit a zodiac with a big ole honkin anti-ship missile. Maybe the helo ops off of INS Mysore (cold)?
Thai vessel delivering fishing supplies to Iran
My-sore-ass-bitch.
Was that story related to this thread? I don’t find anything about Thai vessel delivering fishing supplies to Iran in this article, and going back to “The Hindu”, I don’t find an article listing on that subject, at least by the headlines. If not this thread/story, perhaps you could give me a link as I am interested.
The Indians will have two new carriers in the next 5 years and will retire the older British conversion, the Viraat, that they have been operating for many, many years. They already have the other assets necessary to escort and support them.
We need to declare war on these pirates and completely wipe them out. Several internaltional SAGs should literally flood the waters and take them down while providing escort duties to all high value vessels tranisting the area...bring back the concept of convoys if necessary until the problem is dealt with.
It is inexcusable, IMHO, to have a large tanker of 300,000 tons hijacked by such brigands.
It's good ... the Indians should step up and handle some of this piracy problem. It's their backyard. Doesn't mean we have to "cede control" of the area ... there seem to be plenty of pirates to go around. We're accustomed to working with navies from UK, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, and South Korea. Having one more competent ally just makes our job easier.
That would work well to draw in the pirates in those shipping lanes off Somalia.
go Indians
A very bad day for skinny pirates. Arrgh.
>>to have a large tanker of 300,000 tons
You know what was funny, in a twofaced Saudi kind of way.
The FM, the former intel head, Prince Turki, said in his rambling manner, that the Tragic Kingdom doesn’t want to negotiate or will not, but the owners of the tanker are proceeding to do so.
What BS.
The tanker is owned and operated by Vela International, the subsidiary shipping arm of Aramco, in turn owned by the Kingdom.
>>they are not an ally.
Yes, but when the US has allies like the Euros, who seek to bind the US down the way Gulliver was bound down by the Lilliputians, the Danes dropping of pirates back home, the French, English and Italians, so concerned about international law modalities like jurisdiction and appropriate statutes, perhaps America needs to rethink it’s concept of an “ally”.
If I were an owner I would be hiring Black Water or some other security firm and having them onboard with SAWS and .50's to protect my investment. A relatively small cost to avoid this.
And then the free and civilized countries of the world need to go in there and absolutely destroy these nests of vipers...with extreme prejudice.
>>I would be hiring Black Water or
It’s already happened. A BW ship transversing the Suez Canal accidentaly killed an Egyptian vendor, those who flock to civilian tubs. The BW ship looked like a regular merchant vessel.....hence the vendor didn’t realize that he shouldn’t approach it.... Story was in WIRED.
And today’s update....from ORBAT and the Independent
The first ship of the US private security firm will carry 40 armed persons and a helicopter and will be available for charter for convoy escort. 3-4 more vessels will join.

Yesterday Limbaugh said they sank one
the ‘they’ being the pirates sank the Chinese fishing vessel
I’d expect our relations with India to improve greatly in the coming years, if for no other reason than economics. They’ve long since discovered that socialism doesn’t work and they could be a good counterweight against Chinese or Iranian ambitions in the region.
Because that's where the fish are. I saw Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean fishing boats in that area, not to mention all the locals you would expect.
OK...I understand it was Limbaugh which is fine. I don’t listen to him because of my hearing impairment, so I miss on his take of things. Used to enjoy listening to his show years ago. Thanks for your response.
Note to those inclined to respond about reading at Limbaugh’s website, which happens everytime I say I don’t listen to him, because of my hearing impairment. I do for specifics, but not in general as it takes away from the time I have to read at FR. Thanks for the thought anyway.
The Thai vessel was listed in a early artical about the Saudi Tanker being seized by these criminals. The link is to a earlier report from Thailand about it’s release. There is supposedly 200 or so ships that are at least being reported waiting for the ransom demands to be met. Malaysia and Indonesia have been plagued by Pirates for hundereds of years and very difficult to stop them. Nothing about any Chicom ships being taken. Will search and see.

Maybe ours are under the waves away from prying eyes? Wouldn’t that scare the pirates into submission to have their ship blown out from under them by an unseen adversary.
India mulls increase in number of warships to fight pirates

Might be a good thing for the bad guys to have a rash of (ahem) 'ordnance malfunctions', but the first time a legitimate vessel got hit, there'd be hell to pay.
On land, they police up the weapons and rail about us killing "civillians", what would be different at sea?
Which may be why we are less active against the pirates in the first place.
