Who made 9/11 the “biggest event in American history”? Not Pearl Harbor Day, Yorktown, Midway? If you want the one day the most Americans died in war (by any definition), that would be the first day of the Battle of Sharpsburg.

Thinking American History started “the day I turned 18” is a big part of the problem.

I have to agree with Tax-chick here. The biggest event this decade, maybe.

Over the course of a week, it would have to be the Seven Days (ending w/ the Battle of Malvern Hill) that very same year, 1862.

And I bet I can guess which part of the country you live when you say "Sharpsburg" instead of "Antietam". :)

It may have not been the largest amount of Americans killed in a single day, but it wasn't that long ago that a bunch of murderous thugs attacked us and murdered fellow Americans. And if these losers that were interviewed can't remember what day or year it was, then no wonder the Big O got elected. Shows how stupid many people are.

Antietam was a terrible day, but it wasn’t done by terrorists.

Well, you'd want to watch whom you say that to, in these parts, but that's a different issue :-). However, the agency of terrorists does not, in my opinion, make 9/11 the "biggest event in American history." I'd put the day penicillin hit the market higher on the scale.

Absolutely ghastly. If I read "To the Gates of Richmond" again, I won't sleep well for a month.

What about the day(s) we dropped the atomic bombs, and saved the lives of perhaps a million American soldiers?

I agree that this shows a significant level of ignorance. However, as I said above, a historical perspective that begins yesterday is part of the same problem.

This is why the Founding Fathers did not include everybody as having the right to vote in the beginning. They knew that a good many people just don’t have any real interest in the running of the country other than what they could get for themselves out of it. The franchise was originally limited to male landowners because they had a real stake in the country. They were the producers, and our Founding Fathers were wise enough to realize what would happen if the societal leeches had equal power as the producers, and there are always more leeches than producers. We thought we were more enlightened by giving the vote to everyone, but we were idiots, and now we’re paying the price.

If people don’t know history, they can fall for anything, without realizing that people have been falling for the same things for 5,000 years. Or believe that nobody’s ever been so miserable, having no idea that we’ve only had antibiotics since the 1940’s.

Voters should have to qualify beforehand by taking and passing a test on history and civics. Nothing too difficult, just a 50-question multiple choice on the basics that every 8th grader should know.

That should eliminate a goodly portion of the idiots.

"Discrimination!"

Well, yes. That's a good thing.

Only male property owners could vote when this nation was founded
If we went back to that we could not be doing worse than we are today
When you own property it means you are rooted and have an interest in the affairs of your community

Democracies fail when "the people" figure out they can vote themselves the public treasury

9/11 was the BIGGEST event in American history not simply because of the death toll, but because 3000 INNOCENT people were MURDERED in a single day.

The men killed and wounded at Sharpsburg were there to fight.

The people in the Twin Towers were there to work and provide for their families.

I think there is a big difference, because it isn’t just the death toll. If it were, some of the earthquakes and floods would be more significant in our national memory.

Murder is different.

I understand the point you and others make, but it is not (in my opinion) about the body count.

It is about cold blooded murder on a large scale. It helps to remember they hoped to kill seven times more people that day than they did, and they certainly could have if the timing had been slightly different. There is no doubt at all that if they had nukes, they would have used them.

I can agree to disagree on this. The main point is that there are some seriously ignorant people who you might understand if they said “Sharpsburg?” but...”9/11?” It makes me sick.

Not surprising at all. These people get their information from the media.

How long did it take the media to stop showing film of the attack?

How long did it take the media to switch the fouc from the attack to "abuses by the military against detainees."

How long did it take the media to switch from the attack to losing the war in Iraq.
