Obamas Choose Elite Private School for Kids

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.
"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."
She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Who can blame him? I wouldn’t send my kids to DC public school either. But seriously, as POTUS in this day and age, I don’t think he really has a choice due to security concerns. It’s just too bad he’ll be able to use that as an excuse for something we know would he do even if the Secret Service could guarantee 100% safety at the local PS.
Most PS's have turned into mini-fortresses resembling minimum security prisons. The lessons of Columbine.

I agree with the sentiment, but will not criticize their decision. I'm sure they always knew a private school was the way to go, and it is. That omission is the smallest of my concerns.
On a somewhat related note, I recently watched the final episodes of The West Wing, and was aggravated at how the Jimmy Smits character's wife was so taken aback by the Secret Service detail. You spend years trying to gain the White House and are then astonished at the security apparatus??? "We want our kids to have a normal childhood, blah, blah, blah...". They are the progeny of the President of the United States of America, for heaven's sake. One thing they will NOT have is a normal childhood.
Although they can control the "environment"..better at the chosen school.
Let's face it folks...( the talking head MSM/DBM types won't say it...) the Obama's don't want their kids with those kids that are stuck in Public Schools.
Period.
Oh, hey...I wouldn't either....but I'm not gonna lie about it. The Obama's will...and the MSM/DBN will run cover for them..........

Because of security issues, I don’t have a problem with this. First, kids shouldn’t be a part of a political disagreement. Second, the kids of a POTUS really are subject to special dangers.

But think of all the attention, extra money and better teachers if the Obamas had insisted the girls attend a public school.
They could have had their daddy improve the educations and lives of so many poor children in D.C. You know — CHANGE and share the wealth?

Agree. There are many things to criticize Obama on. This is not one of them.
I agree that it is impossible for the minor children of a POTUS to attend any public school.
Primarily due to safety/security considerations, not only for the children of the POTUS, but also for the other students who will be in the same classrooms with them.
Wealthy and/or famous people nationwide, have to deal with this issue, strictly for security reasons.
What I find egregious, is the huge number of ordinary people who accept it as a given, that the schools they send their own children to everyday, are unsafe for the children of people who are wealthy and/or famous.
Gee, not to the D.C. public school system? I’m shocked. Where are the NEA members to protest this choice?
Wouldn't be surprised if there was a reality show about life in the White House.
This family will be treated like royalty and rock stars. I wonder if the press will leave the girls alone like they did for others or if they will be treated like Miley Cirus (or however you spell her name)
I can see it now. People, Us and other rags will have a weekly white house page with all the daily updates.
