A loyal family friend was appointed to Vice President-elect Joe Bidens vacant Senate seat Monday as an apparent placeholder until Beau Biden can inherit it upon his return from active duty in Iraq.
In one of her final acts in office, Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner (D) selected Ted Kaufman, a longtime adviser and former chief of staff to the elder Biden, to be the states next senator.
Biden (D) won election as Barack Obamas vice presidential running mate but was simultaneously reelected to the Senate on Nov. 4. As he cannot take both jobs, there has been intense speculation since Election Day about whether Beau, the incumbents eldest son, would be his political heir.

Reminds me of the seat warming done to get Ted Kennedy into Jack’s old Senate seat.
Benjamin A. Smith II. Covered the Kennedy seat from 12-27-1960 to 11-7-1962.
I wasn’t aware that one could *inherit* an elected office....
Well, they have to keep his seat warm or he gets brain freeze.
How nice. Lordships handed down from father to son. Reminds me of the good ole days... oh!
BWAHAHA! You've obviously never been to Massachusetts or Chicago!
It's part of our new American aristocracy. Aren't you glad we fought a revolution against England?
These are pseudo-elections... with about as much reality as the elections held in the Soviet Union. Biden runs the DE Democrat Party, which will dutifully nominate his son, and the Democrats are the only show in town in DE. Nomination = election.
Yes, Lord Biden can easily manage to pass to pass his Title and Peerage under the Oligarchy of Incumbency Statutes.
Reminds me of Fitzsimmons keeping Jimmy Hoffa’s seat warm.
Fitz started liking it too much and oops “Where’s Jimmy ?”
How stupid Americans have become!
Bawney Fwank keeps sniffing it.
Well, they’ve had a lot of help doing it - and they’re getting more all the time.
It's not a recent phenomena. This has been going on in Mass since the 1920s.
Sad, infuriating and un-American.
True, but I’m beginning to think that the default setting on people is stupid.
Yeah, but just axe ‘em. They’ll tell you it’s not “dey fault”
It seems the Dems do it frequently.

Isn't part of Beau's record a well-orchestrated move to have Larry Sinclair arrested in DC following a news conference, extradition to Delaware on bogus charges, use of contrived evidence, incarceration with alleged denial of prescription medication, and sudden release from jail timed for Barry's announcement of Poppa-Slow-Joe as Veep candidate?
I'm sure this was a demonstration of "Delaware's values".
Nice to know some democrats believe in “nobility” when it comes to a senate seat... would be nice if they apply that standard to estate taxes... nixing them all together (but that would be installing a de facto noble class... isn’t that your thinking democrats?).
1988: Lloyd Bentsen wins his Senate seat, but loses the VP election, and fails to carry Texas for the Democratic ticket.
Now Biden won both Senate and VP slots.
Seriously, if you are going to run for VP or Pres, you shouldn't be able to simultaneously run for Senate or the House or Governor or anything else.
It reminds me of the Old Testament. The people were adamant that they wanted a King.
