Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has suffered a setback in regional elections, losing several key votes.
While Mr Chavez's broad coalition managed to hold on to most of the regional governors' positions, he did lose the most critical votes including the mayor of Caracas and the governorships of the country's two most populous states.
The mayor's job is often referred to as the second most important position in Venezuela.
While Mr Chavez's popularity remains high, he has never recovered from the surprising loss last year of his sweeping constitutional reforms.
He maintains he still wants to amend the country's constitution in order to run for re-election in 2012, but that now seems unlikely to pass.
The two states that voted against his coalition have almost half the population of Venezuela.
To quote Brook Benton and Randy Travis:
“It’s just a matter of time”
Chavez’s main hold on power has been oil wealth, and showering his supporters with it. That is vanishing before his eyes. He may well be “dispatched” in short order.
Nothing that a bunch of thugs with AK-47s can’t fix.
There are many benefits to a crashing economy, this being one of them.
These idiots spent like $147/barrel oil was going to last forever.
Hey Hugo, what are you going to do if oil hits $15?
I am going to thoroughly enjoy watching that meltdown.

What? You mean socialism does not work???? How can that be ??
Has Jimmy overturned the election results, yet?
Uh-huh.
“Lost the election? We know what comes next... “
Yup, Call for Jimmy Carter to oversee.
quick Hugo call Jimmah, he’ll save our enchiladas.
And BTW,Dasher,on my recent trip to Southeast Asia I met a couple of great Aussie guys from Sydney on a tour.It was fun swapping stories and talking politics.I was surprised by how much they knew about US politics. It was fair dinkum all the way!
Hope this nasty POS gets the “Mussolini treatment” soon and I don’t mean a new mistress...... :^)
You are not suggesting a sip may have been shared from time to time???
No,not really. It was a tour of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam during the daytime. They had a beer but I didn't,i was so afraid of getting food poisoning, etc that I only drank coca cola.they were braver than me.But it was a good day.
bttt
VZ oil is most likely lower than what that sweet crude is selling for. It’s most likely before $40 a barrel. So this commie thug is toast.
I expect these opposition leaders to be found guilty of corruption or whatever and replaced by people hand picked by Chavez.
We saw what happened the last time Chavez lost elections - he took everything he wanted anyway.
“Votes? Wih don’ nid no steenking votes!”
Off shore oil is the only thing keeping the socialist Republic of California going, and those nuts want to cut off their own spigots. At least Chevez and the Veni’s know they need to keep pumping. They are smarter than the average Californian.
Hanging upside down at a gas station, and it should be a Citgo.
“What? You mean socialism does not work???? How can that be ??”
You know what is amazing? Many of the oil producing countries are socialist, or close to it (Middle East, Russia, Venezuela).
Oil wealth is as close to “free” money as you can get. Outside interests pay for the infrastructure development. All these governments need to do is stand back and wait. Then, they either tax the hoo-ha out of the oil or nationalize the industry.
And yet, all of these countries have poor populations. Every single one of them has the same poverty problem. Free money + socialism SHOULD equal prosperity for all, right?
It proves the fallacy of socialism. It creates more of a have/havenot state than capitalism. I’ve seen it in China. The rich vs. poor there is astounding compared to the US.
Endless recounts until he wins -- just like we do in the States.
It’s OK.
He will be the next POTUS after he immigrates to America and does away with the Constitution and citizenship requirements.
Chavez 2016!
Free Gubmint cheese and Ms. Venezuela does bachelor parties!!
Besides Jimmy, Chavez will call Bill Ayers and some of his WUO thugs. They really know how to control crowds and blow up things. What is Bernadine Dohrn doing these days? Getting a new passport?
“sweeping constitutional reforms.”
Coming to a nation near us.
Recounts that favor Al Franken?
Chavez is popular with the gutter rats in the poor neighborhoods cause he takes oil money and gives handouts to those poor.
Course if you are a hard working person with a business or profession you are being taken for a ride.
Sounds familiar...
Time for Chavez to issue out the 200,000 AK 47’s?
zactly.
“He maintains he still wants to amend the country’s constitution in order to run for re-election in 2012”
Why do I get the feeling Obama or the RATs in Congress will be wanting the same thing in two or four years?
What area of China have you been to? Most of China is rural and poverty is widespread while some are prospering in the free enterprise areas of the cities and the coast no?
Russia is far from socialism now. It is more akin to the wild west with one cowboy sheriff who has his hands in everything in the town. Pukey sits atop and doles out biz favors and collects like a mafia king.
“Ive seen it in China. The rich vs. poor there is astounding compared to the US.”
You can see it in US cities that practice socialism too.
Ven. set it’s budget for $100 per barrel of oil!
