Reid: Comprehensive Immigration Reform Will Come Early (Amnesty to "Easily" Pass)
Weekly Standard ^ | November 25, 2008 | Brian Faughnan

Posted on 11/25/2008 9:43:25 AM PST by GOPGuide

Harry Reid told the Detroit Free Press that he expects comprehensive immigration reform to be passed relatively early in the next Congress:

Q. With more Democrats in the Senate and the House and a Democrat in the White House, how do you see congressional efforts playing out on such issues as health care and immigration?

A: On immigration, there's been an agreement between (President-elect Barack) Obama and (Arizona Republican Sen. John) McCain to move forward on that. ... We'll do that. We have to get this economy stuff figured out first, so I think we'll have a shot at doing something on health care in the next Congress for sure.

Q: Will there be as much of a fight on immigration as last time?

A: We've got McCain and we've got a few others. I don't expect much of a fight at all. Now health care is going to be difficult. That's a very complicated issue. We debated at great length immigration. People understand the issues very well. We have not debated health care, so that's going to take a lot more time to do.

One senator who wields significant influence on the debate is Robert Menendez, and he seems to be pushing ahead on the issue as well. Menendez is no extremist among Senate Democrats, either; he's just been named head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee. Expect Menendez to lead a push--apparently with Reid's blessing--to get comprehensive reform passed in the first half of 2009. Proponents will argue that while the measure may be unpopular, it's better to swallow a bitter pill far in advance of the midterms. And if it seems that they lack the votes to pass it in the next few months, they'll bargain for a commitment for passage later in 2009.

Open the borders. It’s easier than playing these immigration games. With unemployment shooting up into double digits, we’ll need a lot of third world labor to keep the unemployment checks coming.

[me:]“It will not pass the House anymore”

Are you sure, seems to me that it will, al be it late at night, attached to [...]

Perhaps I should say it is far less likely now than it was previously. There is bound to be principled leadership in the House whether Boehner is still minority leader or not, and a very good portion of the House Democrat freshmen are up for re-election in 2010, and know where their bread is buttered.

I expect a coalition of Conservative Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats to rise up to defeat a good portion of what the liberals will want to do- and this is our best, and only hope. It has been our best and only hope all the way along. We are in a far better position now than we would have been if the RINOs had stayed in power with MccAin't at the helm.

“So let me get this straight - America is losing jobs and they want to import illegals to displace the American worker?”

No, they want the illegals already here to get a DNC membership card.

Whatever fence that has been built to date is not coming down. Yet.

I am not giving in, I will resist all of the way. It is up on the change.gov website under immigration soliciting remarks. I also gave numbers.usa some money. What other activities can we do to let Congress know that’s not what the polls say. The polls show enforcement and this issue will further divide the country. I am beginning to think that’s what they want so we merge with Canada and Mexico

So, we're going to give "amesty" to all of these illegals...does that mean automatic citizenship too?

They would be fools to become citizens and give up free medical care (sniffles to ER, paid for by us---costs $200 or so), welfare for their extended family, free food, subsidized housing and preferred status as a minority.

Disallowing any of the benefits just because they are Illegal Insurgent Criminal Alien Colonists would be racist.

I agree. We cannot surrender. Outrageous that we have troops dying in Iraq while our politicians are waving the white flag to the invaders and also promising them perks. Although McCain was hell bent on amnesty and had a secret meeting with LaRaza, they still wouldn't vote for him.

We need to make every effort possible to fight this. Call and write to our representative, talk-shows, blogs, etc.

THIS NOTE IS FOR YOU AND THE HANDFUL of others on this thread reacting strongly (and not in defeatism):

I just called Sen. Reid's office directly (202-224-3542) and pressed 1 to speak to a staff member.

I spoke reasonably. I told her my husband had just been laid off and that I found it appalling that the senator would push for amnesty at a time when millions of people were facing joblessness--and to think illegal aliens would have citizenship and rights was even more appalling. I explained that if she thought our outrage last year burned up the phones, just wait till next year!

The upshot was that I shocked this female staff member, for I sensed she hadn't a clue that people like me realized Obama did NOT campaign on this issue and for Sen. Reid to push it would show a callous disregard for Americans facing a depression. She assured me she'd pass on my concerns (and I thought it was a sincere assurance).

Anyhoooooo . . . for any others reading this post, please, please, please do not wring your hands. Put them to good use writing and/or telephoningyour congressfolk or Reid.

Regards . . . Penny

The fight is over and I have decided to embrace the horror.

I want to be the first on my block to sport a shinny new guest worker.

Think of the possibilities and all the things I will no longer have to do for myself, everything from cooking and cleaning to yard maintenance. Margarita in hand, I will be able to kick up my heels as Maria drives my John Deere wearing a teddy. She can give me a message later.

Jump on the team people and come in for the big win, “guest workers”, they’re not just for members of congress anymore. We can all benefit from this source of cheep and abundant labor. The government will cover all the silly housing, healthcare, education, transportation, crime, environmental and other related costs so I don’t have to. This program ROCKS.

They’re so cheep they’re almost free. We should also seriously consider changing our countries name to MARGARITAVILLE.

Why do you say that?

see #42

The Dems will overreach. And the Blue Dogs will rebel. The harder left they come out, the more swift and utterly complete that rebellion will be- So I am not as fearful as many here, due to the hard left turn...

No, I find that to be the perfect recipe needed to cause revulsion among the population, and send those Good ol' Boys in the Blue Dog Dem wing firmly over to join with the Conservative House Republicans. That is where the rubber meets the road, and that is where the people can best stop the BS.

Good point and it is our only hope, if 20 some million illegals are granted citizenship, we and our kids are screwed.

It’ll pass.

The calls to the House on the bailout were like 20-1 against it, but they shoved it down our throats anyway.

So if 75% of the calls this time are against reform, they will just do it anyways, they have proved over and over they don’t give a crap about the American people.

We basically have no representatives. We have no Congress.

They are high-paid figureheads. That’s it.

People this is a trial balloon. We need to burst it immediately. Don’t give up the good fight. The overwhelming majority of DEMOCRAT voters oppose this. We can win this again.
