5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned that federal law enforcement sources believe that a Twin Cities man blew himself up in a suicide bombing in Northern Somalia last month.
The FBI and Homeland Security are investigating whether Shirwa Ahmed had developed a terrorist recruiting network in the area.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned that Ahmed came to the Twin Cities in 1996 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. He was a naturalized U.S. citizen.
More than a dozen young men of Somali descent, mostly in their 20s, from the Minneapolis area have recently disappeared, U.S. law enforcement officials tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. All are thought to be associates of Ahmed. U.S. officials suspect most of the young men have departed for Somalia to fight in ongoing violence there or to train in terrorist camps. Family members of the young men are said to be distraught, trying to figure to out what happened to them, sources say.
So far, the investigation has not uncovered credible evidence of a plot targeting the U.S. but American officials want to track down all these young men before they can say for certain what this is or is not, according to ABC News. Sources say the situation is being closely monitored by senior law enforcement and intelligence officials in Washington.
CIA Director Michael Hayden recently voiced his concern about increased fighting in Somalia and the Horn of Africa and the desire of Al Qaeda to strengthen it's ties in Somalia. "In East Africa, Al Qaeda's engaging Somali extremists to revitalize operations," said Hayden."And while there clearly has not yet been an official merger, the leader of the al-Shabaab terrorist group is closely tied to al-Qaida. And the recent bombings in Somalia may have meant, at least in part, may have been meant to strengthen the bona fides of this group with al-Qaeda's senior leaders. A merger between al-Shabaab and al-Qaida could give Somali extremists much needed funding while al-Qaeda could then claim to be re-establishing its operations based in East Africa. That's a base that was severely disrupted about two years ago when Ethiopia moved into Somalia."
Homeland Security is busy deciding color swatches.
McNaney does good work reporting. I believe he was the one that led the charge on exposing the flying Imams.
I guess there’s one less Lost Boy to worry about.
Send some ordnance sniffing gerbils (they don't allow dogs) into it.
much more effect if it happened here. and the hardest part is getting a bomber into the country and they had that issue solved!
these guys make about as much sense to me as women do.
He is now likely to vote Democrat for every future election.
his pirate dreams are over.
So again, I am going to ask myself this question, “WHY do I live in MN???”
I have GOT to get out of here.
From the article:
“Family members of the young men are said to be distraught, trying to figure to out what happened to them, sources say.”
Yeah, I’m sure they have NO idea what has happened to them.
Can someone please tell me WHY we bring these people here to our great country?
“American officials want to track down all these young men “
Why? You had them all in three blocks on Franklin ave. for
fourteen years. Should have rounded them up and shipped them back in 1996!
Those high-rise apartment buidlings on Franklin have to be a virtual hornet’s nest of jihadis.
Start tracking down the ones that still live here.
You would be correct. Bob’s a real pitbull...

The worst has got to the the West Bank area, particularly around the Cedar-Riverside housing projects.
If sharia law is ever imposed in Minnesota, it’ll likely be there first!
They were Sudanese, and for the most part, Christians.
When I took my training to apply for a carry permit (both times) one of the things they teach you is avoidance of dangerous situations. Your odds of having to use deadly force to save your life go down if you avoid dangerous places/situation.
So....No, I’ve never been to any of those places....
They’ve added a video report to the web story.
Can someone explain to me why we are letting these people in? Seriously, this is suicide to our nation. Why can’t they stay in Somalia and rebuild that nation? Northern Somalia is capitalistic and isn’t the war-torn strife that Mogadishu is. Boasso has all kinds of entrepreneurs there making it the fastest-growing city in Somalia.
