Academic Nanny State
by Angela Logomasini, Ph.D.
Both universities and elementary schools are going after bottled water, as if that were the greatest threat facing students today! At the grade and high school levels, officials are removing bottled water from vending machines and cafeterias, leading students toward drinks with calories. Of course these are fine in moderation, but why deny a healthy option like water? Students supposedly would drink from water fountains, which as I point out on enjoybottledwater.org are not always sanitary or appetizing.
A school in Madison, Connecticut is learning the hard way. It has recently been revealed that the water coming from one schools water fountains has contained excess levels of uranium for a couple years. While the public health impacts are probably pretty low, people dont want their children drinking that water. The unfortunate problem with drinking water fountains in Madison schools offers yet another example of the importance of bottled water. Tap water is generally very safe. But there are times when people would rather drink bottled water, such as in this case.
But soon many schools will deny that option! Currently, in Ontario Canada, many schools are looking into total bans on bottled water and maybe even other drinks in plastic bottles. I sure hope they are making sure their tap water is a good quality. Many school officials there complain that it comes out a rusty brown.
This week there are stories in the press regarding efforts in Missouris Washington University to remove bottled water as an option for students. Ironically, much of the increase in bottled water in the past several years has simply replaced drinking of caffeine and/or sugar-containing drinks. Denying the option to buy bottled water is likely to increase consumption other bottled drinks, which may add onto extra pounds that students gain during college. It will also make it more difficult for students engaged in sports to stay hydrated.
Similar university bans on bottled water are being pushed or implemented at Brandeis University; Cornell University; Brown University (RI); University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Oklahoma State University; Southwestern; Clark University (AR); the University of Texas-Southwestern; the State University of New York in Buffalo; University of California, San Diego; University of New Mexico and many more!
Denying consumers the opportunity to choose a healthy beverage on campuses or anywhere else is simply foolish and a bit frightening. After all if they continue to succeed in banning water, what will they go after next?
In a weather-related or other emergency, an easily accessible supply of bottled water is essential. Bottled water meets the needs of some of our most vulnerable individuals, those with compromised health. In fact, bottled water is often recommended for people whose immunity may be compromised by chemotherapy, transplant operations, or diseases .
Protect the right to drink bottled water. Please take a moment and sign the petition. Thank You! Petition link
If you would, please consider signing this petition. Thanks so much :)
I enjoy bottled water but that’s not really the point is it?
The issue, as usual, is the left’s now-standard combination of self-regard, false efficacy and strange compulsion towards totalitarianism in enacting total bans on anything that becomes their target du jour with wildly disproportionate effort and/or penalties applied to those who become heretics and criminals overnight.
Anyone left on campus with a sane thought in their head should bring a nice bottle of water to class/office every day just to watch cowardly liberals quiver with impotent anger.
The delicious irony is that the libs are the very ones who encouraged drinking bottled water in the first place. It’s soooooooooooooo ‘in vogue’.
Got a bottle beside me right now.
The tap water here is most fowl!
Think......egg salad smell!:)
whatever happened to teachers are hired to do one job . . . teach.
Tough call here. Whom to root for - the people driven to hysterics by the poisons they know are in their tap water, or the lunatics worried about the “sustainability” of bottled water?
Oh no! Thank goodness for bottled water.
It is ironic. And now they want to tax bottled water. Just another way for liberals to tax us.
How have you been? Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
We would gag on the water out here in West Texas. It’s awful!!
Thank GOODNESS for bottled water!...or diet coke! LOL!
Thanks, GB and Dr.Angel for bringing this to our attention.
It’s amazing what the looney left will go after!
It never does end with them, does it. :/
I know that it's just another of those baby steps to
totaliarism and we have to take a stand somewhere!
Not till we are all under their thumbs!
No way, no how!!!
I just Signed the Petition, Dear GeeBee; I Drink Bottled Water Everyday; the Tap Water where I Live Tastes Like Bleach, Lol!
