Noonan: Mischievous Media Wants to Make Palin Face of GOP
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 11/26/2008 6:54:02 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Why does Sarah Palin continue to receive so much media coverage? Peggy Noonan has a theory. The Wall Street Journal columnist believes the MSM is up to what she considers "mischief": attempting to make Sarah Palin the face of the Republican party.

Noonan propounded her premise during an appearance today on Morning Joe.

I think it's amusing that people on our side like you would never think to call Biden a total buffoon....even though he is a political hack of the first order and never held a real job in his life...and would never publically consider him to be totally unfit to be POTUS.....yet pick apart SP....even to the absurd criticism about her campaign stump speech.....conservatives like you have another agenda against SP....why don't you tell us what it is?

...attempting to make Sarah Palin the face of the Republican party.

With Gov Palin we'll have a 'face' of integrity, decency and one committed to genuine conservatism, instead of the other options that are of the 'two-sided' variety.

Strange that she, Parker, Will, Brooks and the other true “fringe” people on the conservative side can’t get over condescending to the one candidate on the GOP side who could and will continue to attract huge crowds and financial support (I raised a ton of money for McCain and I wouldn’t have given him a cent without her on the ticket). Peggy Noonan has to have someone to be condescending to because if you read her columns closely, she says absolutely nothing that makes the slightest sense. Just a lot of airy maxims from an author who is not overly bright but who needs to convince her real audience (the West Side liberals who will invite her to their cocktail parties so she can say snippy things about Palin) that she is a “deep thinker”. Her columns are frankly, terrible, and I could not put it more succinctly than a commenter here who said “she writes like she is constantly trying to balance a plate on the top of her head”.

Completely disagree. If you're looking for Palin being substantive, go find the video of Alaska gubernatorial debates. She blows both candidates away with substance. You seem to be forgetting that as VP candidate, she's going to be reading speeches written for her by campaign staff; blame them for how she appeared and what she said in speeches.

You didn't mention how horrible she was during her interviews, even with Hannity. I think those were abberations, due to her not being fully up to speed on the national issues, and her handlers scripting her too much, causing her to have to try to remember what to say instead of just saying it. I also think you're overstating her going to war with Russia if it invades Georgia.

None this means that Palin is hands down the candidate for 2012, as we have Jindal and Daniels, among others, to consider. But get off the "Palin is a disaster for the party" bandwagon. The media isn't going after her this hard if she wasn't a viable threat, and there is an elitist snot aspect to our party that is rejecting her for reasons which the rest of us find endearing and connecting.

Did anyone notice that Noonan refers to her as “Mrs Palin” instead of Governor Palin?

Noonan is so over. She reminds me of that Norma Desmond character in “Sunset Boulevard”. Pathetic has-been.

Someone who blithely says we should go to war with Russia if it invades Georgia (as she told Charlie Gibson)

She never said that. She demonstrated what our obligation would be under article 5 of NATO if Georgia was a NATO member.

You base your “lack of substance” comments on what the media tells you. You are just like the Republicans that fell for the “he's just a stupid actor” meme about Reagan. Don't worry about being played for a fool by Governor Palin, you've already been played for a fool.

Who or what is a “Noonan?” Wasn’t that the name of the character played by Michael O’Keefe in “Caddyshack?”

McCain and Obama did EXACTLY the same thing, i.e., “did little more than repeat ... applause lines over and over again on the campaign trail”. Why criticize Sarah for it but not the others?

With the current technology, and instant news, it’s going to happen. Candidates sometimes speak at four venues a day, and they can’t come up with a brand new speech every four hours. It’s not like whistle-stop speeches from the back of a train where the audience hasn’t heard what was said at the last town. Give her a break.

I am in Howard County=HC. Was republican 15 years ago, now liberal with moderate/liberal republican pockets .I call them the “I just dont want my tax money going to lazy ...s “, republicans, hot for McCain, scared of Obama. Liked Powell in 2000. Otherwise they believe in taxes and government services.

HC (majority democrats) voted for Kerry in 2004, very high incomes, love government with ‘smart’ guy like them=Kerry or Obama in charge. They have multiple degrees , worship government, work on fed government contracts or fed workers with high pay (very high pay.) And see Palin as a threat to country like we see Obama is with socialism/anti-Christian. They see her supporters as dumb uneducated hicks.

HC Mommy state government, Now putting up speeding cameras to collect more money, huge fines for underage drinking . But illegals are allowed to get drivers licences.

Yes, and the NewsBusters article does contain a link to the video of Noonan’s hot mic remarks.

In all honesty, it seems like the on mic "mistakes" are a great way of getting immediate publicity. IMHO, we need a few more loose lipped individuals saying things "by accident" to garner more media attention. Maybe get Hannity or someone to "accidentally" leave their mic on and say, "Maybe we could have beat Obama if it weren't for those damn Rockefeller Republicans."
