MUMBAI, India — DEVELOPING: Gunmen targeted luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks in India's financial capital Thursday, wounding 25 people, police and witnesses said.

It was not clear how many of those were dead or injured, but Indian television stations are reproting at least 20 dead, while Reuters puts the number at 10.

A.N Roy police commissioner of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said several people had been wounded in the attacks and police were battling the gunmen.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," said Roy.

Some of the gunmen are still holed up in buildings, a police official told Reuters.

Two eyewitnesses told Sky News through mobile devises the gunmen were going after westerners.

"We were asked if there were any British or Americans," they said.

Fox News just reported that the India Times upped the death toll to 80 with terrorists still inside a hotel. It seems to have the markings of an AQ coordinated multiple target attack.

India news reporter today says terrorists from Pakistan are targeting American & British tourists at hotels...

NOVEMBER 26, 2008, 10:42 A.M. ET

Al Qaeda’s Focus Is Pakistan, U.S. Senior Commander Says
By YOCHI J. DREAZEN

WASHINGTON — Pakistan has replaced Iraq as al Qaeda’s main focus, and the terror group has stepped up its efforts to destabilize the nuclear-armed South Asian nation, according to a senior U.S. military commander.
[Gen. James Conway]

“Iraq is now a rear-guard action on the part of al Qaeda,” said Gen. James Conway, the head of the Marine Corps and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in an interview. “They’ve changed their strategic focus not to Afghanistan but to Pakistan, because Pakistan is the closest place where you have the nexus of terrorism and nuclear weapons.”

The time is coming when the United States will have to take over Pakistan by force and gain possession of its nuclear arsenal.

I know it sounds like a crazy idea, but it might eventually come down to that. The specter of an Ayman al-Zawahiri getting his hands on these nukes is too horrible to contemplate.

Introducing Mumbai (Bombay)

Measure out: one part Hollywood; six parts traffic; a bunch of rich power-moguls; stir in half a dozen colonial relics (use big ones); pour in six heaped cups of poverty; add a smattering of swish bars and restaurants (don’t skimp on quality here for best results); equal parts of mayhem and order; as many ancient bazaars as you have lying around; a handful of Hinduism; a dash of Islam; fold in your mixture with equal parts India; throw it all in a blender on high (adding generous helpings of pollution to taste) and presto: Mumbai.

An inebriating mix of all the above and more, this mass of humanity is a frantic melange of India’s extremes. It is the country’s financial powerhouse and its vogue centre of fashion, film and after-dark frolics. Glistening skyscrapers and malls mushroom amid slums and grinding poverty, and Mumbai slowly marches towards a brave new (air-conditioned) world. But not everyone made the guest list: more than half of the population lives in slums, and religious-based social unrest tugs at the skirt of Mumbai’s financial excess

Mumbai is the bubblegum glamour of Bollywood cinema, shopping malls full of designer labels, cricket on the Oval Maidan, promenading families eating bhelpuri on the beach at Chowpatty, red double-decker buses queuing in grinding traffic jams and the infamous cages of the red-light district

HOTELS: http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/hotel/?RegionId=2141

One of the hotels that was struck:

Taj Mahal Palace & Tower

The Taj Mahal Palace is a prestigious hotel located in the Colaba region of Mumbai, India, next to the Gateway of India. Part of the Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces, this 105-year old heritage building retains its stature as the flagship property of the group. It boasts a distinguished list of guests including Mick Jagger, Jacques Chirac, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent & Katharine, Duchess of Kent, Harald V of Norway & Queen Sonja of Norway, Marianne Faithfull, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, The Beatles, Bill Clinton, Jacqueline Onassis and Elvis Presley. From a historical and architectural point of view, The Taj Mahal Palace and the Tower are two distinct buildings, built at different times and in different architectural designs. The "Tower" refers to the Taj Intercontinental.

I have been to that cesspool and also to Hyderabad...what a disgusting filthy disease ridden country. I have never seen people live in such disgusting squalor, eating while sitting in mud and animal feces, open sewers with dead animals in them.

The hotel I stayed at was nice, but they had no secure water supply and trucks had to bring water in all day long.

The dirt, the smell...unnngghhh!
