GMU Analyst Offers Insight On McCain's 'Big' Mistakes; Hard-Right Appeal, Financing, Palin Cited
The Washington Post ^ | 2008-11-27 | Jennifer Buske

Posted on 11/27/2008 7:37:16 PM PST by rabscuttle385

Republican Sen. John McCain made three "big" mistakes while campaigning.

Add those to the fact he had to follow in the footsteps of an unpopular president, and the Democrats were almost guaranteed a win Nov. 4, a political analyst said Friday.

"It was a very unusual election, and almost all trend lines said it would be a Democratic victory," said Jerry Mayer, associate professor at George Mason University's School of Public Policy and director of the master's of public policy program. "It was not your year, Republicans."

I must have missed the part where McCain leaned hard right even though I am usually right on top of that sort of thing.

Darn, I hate it when that happens. (/sarc).

Jerry Mayer has to be loony tunes, just plain utterly stupid, or sarcastic. John Sidney McCain appealing to the hard right!!! hahahahahahahaha.

Amnesty, campaign finance reform, buddy-buddy with Ted Kennedy, dissing POW and MIA families, and on and on. This is hard right, Jerry Mayer? Where did this fruitcake come from?

I have relative who are moderates and they found him too much to the left.

Guess he’s too young to remember when McGovern picked Eagleton, had the news come out that Eagle had electroshock treatments, said he would stand by Eagleton, then threw him under the bus.

“Another evidence of incompetence intellect in an alledgedly “name” university!”

Just FYI, the “allegedly ‘name’ university” has one of the best and perhaps only conservative/libertarian leaning economics departments in the USA. Two of its econ professors have won the Nobel Prize in Economics within recent memory, and another, Walter Williams, is rather well known.

So who’s an ignoramus?

Mister Keyes’ actual reparations proposal required a genealogy to exclude anyone who wasn’t descended from actual American slaves from getting a check, and another to see who was descended from an actual slave owner to see who owed such monies.

I could certainly live with the consternation implementing his proposal would engender amongst the Jesse Jackson crowd.
Especially since my ancestors (west Asian Slavs, Scotch, and Irish) didn’t come over until the 1880s.

So while I didn’t really think the whole thing was necessary, I can see where my immunity from any chance of having had to participate may have made the proposal less odious to me than to others.

Well, GMU is succumbing to beltway-think -- that explains the professor's PDS. But the professor is right about the first reason McCain lost -- I also think it was his biggest strategic mistake. And McCain made it years ago. What was it? Campaign Finance Reform.

Still, the perfesser is off his rocker with the beltway affliction in re Palin. Palin was McCain's greatest tactical success.

Lieberman couldnt even win FL for Gore and he would have won it for McCain? Sure.

I guess Joe would have prevented the 30 pt swing in the hispanic vote and the 15 pt swing in the black vote that won the state for Obama. Please.

Even if Joe did help win FL, he wouldn’t have helped at all in VA, NC, CO, NV, NM, OH or any of the other states, so McCain maybe loses with 195 EVs instead of 174, big deal.

PA? Jews make up 1% of the vote in PA and McCain lost by 11 pts. Somehow I doubt the Jewish vote was really where he messed up there.

Just more attempts to discredit Palin. They want to totally ruin any future chances. Really though, it all depends on how Obama does. If he does well, or even average, he’ll win rather comfortably in 2012 and we’ll see what happens in 2016. If he screws up like Carter or Bush41 did in their first terms, Palin or whoever the GOP nominee is will have a very good shot, just as Reagan and Clinton did when they won.
