Dawson’s Whites-Only Country Club Past Gets GOP Attention
The Charleston City Paper ^ | November 27, 2008 | Greg Hambrick

Posted on 11/27/2008 7:41:41 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

Just as soon as South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson announces that he’s running to chair the national party, a story is disseminated by his opponents (note: fellow Republicans) referring to his recent membership in a whites-only country club. Dawson left the club in August, days before he first suggested that he might be looking to the national stage.

As usual, the story says more about backwards South Carolina than it does about Dawson. My absolute favorite part is where the reporter and some pundits do a little guessing on the reason for his separation from the club.

“It’s something that would have a cleansing effect just in case (Sen. John) McCain would choose him to be head of the Republican National Committee,” said political scientist and GOP activist Neal Thigpen, who has been active in Republican politics for 40 years.

Dawson dismissed that as “hypothetical.”

I think that Katon Dawson is the most qualified person to be the RNC chairman right now. I hope that this is not a real issue. You know that the Dems are going to make big hay out of this if he becomes chairman. They will use it to further the notion that the GOP is a southern, racist, whites-only party.

They should invite Oprah’s Choice to be an honorary member, and all will be forgiven.

Somebody said during the recent campaign, that race was not just an issue in politics, it is the ONLY ISSUE!, as southern segregationists maintained about 1955.

“it is the ONLY ISSUE!, as southern segregationists maintained about 1955.”

...along with northern and coastal liberals in 2008, including ‘media’ employees.

If John McCain would choose him to head the RNC, Mr. Dawson is ipso facto not qualified for the job.

It’s a private club. Big fricking deal. How many whites are members of the NAACP?

Yeah, I hope that this doesn’t derail Katon Dawson or will bring unnecessary criticism on the GOP. I think Dawson is the best man for the job.

they used race to torpedo George Allen, and it worked.

One word, and an entire campaign went down the drain.

Don't you think it's funny that this Republican is being challenged for his membership in an all-white club, when there's an all-black club in the US House of Representatives?

What's that? You haven't heard of it? It's called the Congressional Black Caucus. Blacks-only membership, on the tax payer's dime.

He should pull an 0bama and claim that he didn’t know it was a whites-only club, they way obama ‘didn’t know’ that jerry wright was spewing racial hatred in his church for 20+ years.

Yes, there is definitely hypocrisy there.

However, you know that the GOP has an image problem with regards to race relations. It’s totally unfair and untrue, but it’s there nonetheless. I just hope this wouldn’t be an issue for our party if Katon Dawson becomes the RNC chairman.

Now that our next President is a member of our American black culture (at least half so), we no longer need these various “black” groups in congress or otherwise.

NAACP is black only club. United Negro College Fund is
an educational assistance organization with 40 private, historically black, member colleges and universities. So this is a whites only club.

Barry Goldwater for one (starting in the 1940's). A lot of good it did him!
