Very true. The past eight years has shown us that when a republican pushes liberalism from the White House, it's very difficult for conservatives in the congress to stand against them. This was especially true considering how even the republican leadership in the house and senate during those years just went along with all of the liberal legislation Bush wanted passed. McCain would have been far worse than Bush in this regard. McCain would have begun to "reach across the isle" on day one, and he wouldn't have looked back.
At least now the conservatives in the House and Senate can be a true opposition with the liberal president being from the other party. It's just too bad that we don't have enough numbers in either chamber of congress to mount much of an opposition on many issues. We are going to be heavily leaning on those democrats that ran to the right of the republicans that they defeated in the 06 and 08 house races. Those democrats are from conservative districts, and will be the most vulnerable should the agenda drift too far to the left.
They are scared. Peggy, Eugene and all of the other “fixers” are hoping beyond hope that we will agree with them that things are fine. I think they have mistaken a revolt of the radicals and the welfare class as a mandate. I think we need to go back and “revisit” the numbers a little bit. I would suggest that if we were to “weight” each person’s vote in this election by the contribution he or she actually makes to our society, we would truly see why this “mandate” just makes things more hopeless. I think this trend continues until our “balance sheet” shows more “assets” than “liabilities”. Anybody up for a “spinoff”? If not, you should at least be aware that we are subsidizing an even more significant “mandate” ext time.
Damn it, Eugene, get a real job.
The Administration has changed, but the World hasn’t changed. Nor will it, easily.
Most Obama voters had no idea what they were voting for.
Sure. That is why patriotic Americans are arming themselves at unprecedented rates throughout the country. As I always say, "Liberalism is the politics of denial."
Reminscent of the obtuse Pauline Kael who said "How could Nixon have won? Everybody I know voted for McGovern!"
This is correct. There are 3 factions: Conservatives (about 50 million of us), Liberals (about 50 million), and Mexicans (about 30 million). Everyone else falls in line behind one of those camps. The Liberals have the government, communications, and education at all levels. The Conservatives have the guns, farms (food), and economy. The Mexicans have superior reproductive traits and are effectively a servant class for whichever of the primary factions (Liberal or Conservative) proves dominant.
Right now, the Liberals and the Mexicans have us out-numbered and out-flanked in communications (hearts and minds) and breeding numbers. We, however, have them at a disadvantage in personal arms and productivity (we own all the businesses). No telling which way it would tip in the event of a all-out internal conflict, but since the Liberals have the cities, I would abandon them. They would be the first casualties of any destabilizing event, regardless of foreign or domestic instigation.
I refuse to recognize the term “african-American” as its used. It denegrates U.S. citizenship and should be insulting to all Americans.
They've made a worse mess than a dog's dinner out of something that originated as pure and good.
They're not crazy, they're disciples of Satan.
There is absolutely no way to disagree with this.
This is why getting Obama on the scene was actually a blessing in disguise. It is causing a great awakening on both sides of the spiritual divide. There is no in between. You either love human life and individual freedom, or you adore Change and slavery and infanticide. No gray area. You are either with Barry, or with the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.
eugenerobinson@washpost.Eugene 'prolly' also feels 'blessed' when there's a Sale at the Pottery Barn.In myriad ways that we'll discover over the next four years, Obama's election makes this a different country -- ''a more perfect union.'' I, for one, feel blessed to live in such interesting times.
(my girly-man alert meter hit 11)
I don't insist on being referred to as a Danish-American, nor does my wife display German-American.
DemocRAT Party=The party of death and homosexuals.
Then the fool turns his entire holdings over to someone he knows nothing about.
The story of this smug, narcissistic empty suit is only now beginning to really unfold.
“. . . supposed to be an ancient Chinese curse, but I can’t find evidence that the saying is Chinese at all, much less that it’s ancient”
Why are reporters so danged ignorant these days?
The term comes from “Dangerous Wind”. It’s the two Chinese symbols for Danger and for Wind. When placed together they can mean ‘Opportunity’ or they can mean ‘Danger’, depending on the context. If your intention is to be oblique in your meaning, then you say, “may you live in interesting times” and let the hearer decide whether you mean blessing or curse.
I seriously doubt someone like Robinson has ever studied history, or if he has, has understood the consequences. Of course I get that feeling whenever I read the bloviations of any liberal scribbler. He’s clearly in an Obama-trance...the kind of hypnotic state where anything The Glorious Leader says is to be followed blindly and faithfully. Obama has no idea what he’s doing, but whatever he does, flunkys like Robinson will applaud him.
